Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during Fantastic Fest 2024. IFC Films opens “The Rule of Jenny Pen” in select theaters Friday, March 7, with a Shudder premiere on March 28.
When recommended a beach-read by a roommate he doesn’t want, the academic Judge Stefan Mortensen (Geoffrey Rush) scoffs, “All those books say the same thing.”
10 years after Julianne Moore won her Oscar for “Still Alice,” moviegoers could argue something similar about an indie drama casting an elite actor as a dementia patient in rapid decline. Those audiences will be the least prepared for “The Rule of Jenny Pen” and may feel its singular wrath stronger than most. That’s an enviable position to be in for one of recent memory’s more unusual thrillers — even if its lack of narrative convention veers more vexing in the end.

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.
As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.
Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Memento Intl., the well-established Paris-based international sales company behind “Call Me by Your Name,” is rebranding as Paradise City Sales and is bringing “My Notes on Mars,” starring Greta Lee and Andrew Scott, to the EFM.
Emilie Georges, who founded Memento Intl. 20 years ago, launched the production vehicle Paradise City a few years ago with London-based Naima Abed. The pair have had great success with the pics they delivered, notably 2025 Sundance hit ”Atropia,” starring Alia Shawkat and Channing Tatum, and Anthony Chen’s 2023 drama ”Drift,” with Cynthia Erivo. “My Notes of Mars,” Hungarian director Lili Horvát’s English-language debut feature, is the latest co-production on Paradise City’s slate.
The rebranding comes at a pivotal time as Georges and Abed seek to build a closer bond between production and sales. As such, the sales outlet will now operate under the same Paradise City banner, which has offices in Paris and London,...

When Julianne Moore accepted her 2015 Oscar for Still Alice, she made a point of thanking me and my husband: “And finally, to the filmmakers, Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, who had hoped to be here tonight but can’t, because of Richard’s health. When Richard was diagnosed with Als, Wash asked him what he wanted to do. Did he want to travel? Did he want to see the world? And he said that he wanted to make movies.”
The declaration she referred to took place three years before. Richard had just been told it was highly likely he had Als. The weight of terms like total paralysis, locked-in, and no cure was beginning to settle, dramatically reshaping our sense of the future. Leigh Whannell, writer and director of The Invisible Man, brings his chilling approach to another Universal Monsters adaptation with Wolf Man. From Blumhouse production, this reimagining of the 1941 film explores Blake’s (Christopher Abbott) harrowing transformation into a werewolf after returning to his estranged father’s remote Oregon home. Alongside his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth), the Wolf Man story follows Blake's battle with a monstrous curse and the slow, terrifying loss of his humanity.
In an interview with The New York Times, Whannell shared how he conceived the werewolf's point-of-view shots. The director's latest monster movie included a standout feature: scenes shot from Blake's perspective, giving a visceral glimpse into Blake's harrowing experience as he slowly transforms into a monster and attacks his family. Here's what he had to say:
I had this idea of the camera moving around the room and suddenly what seemed like gibberish became legible,...

One of the best performances of Kristen Stewart's career is coming to Netflix next month. Though her breakout roles came in David Fincher's Panic Room, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild, Stewart has been synonymous with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga for much of her career, starring in the five franchise films from 2008 to 2012. In those five films, Stewart's performance as Bella was widely panned, which led to her being unfairly labeled as an emotionless actress.
After starring in another big-budget production, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart shifted her focus to indie projects and, just like her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, reinvented herself as an actor. During the remainder of the 2010s, Stewart starred in the dramas Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, and Equals, but began garnering critical acclaim for her collaborations with director Olivier Assayas in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper.

Judging by the shocked faces on the European buyers and sellers attending the recent American Film Market in Las Vegas, the U.S. election didn’t end the way they had hoped. On the morning after, the most common reaction heard around the Palms Casino, where the conference took place, was “Wtf” (or a variation of) along with an eagerness to board a return flight home.
Whatever the opinions of Donald Trump across the Atlantic, the new political order could prove a
boon to Europe’s creative industries, which have flourished thanks to government-backed incentives and an exodus of U.S. talent to the Continent.
If anything, the election outcome crystallizes a shift in the way America is perceived abroad, one that has made Europe a land of opportunity for talent.

Nobody does it quite like M. Night Shyamalan. The man has been making original movies for most of his career, save for the occasional adaptation like "The Last Airbender". It's rare, particularly in the modern era, but Shyamalan has built up enough cache with audiences to do that, dating back to his breakout smash hit "The Sixth Sense" in 1999. In the aftermath of that success, Shyamalan pretty much had a blank check to do whatever he wanted. His choice? An unconventional one for the time. He made "Unbreakable," which was a very unique take on the superhero genre. It was also a movie that nearly featured an Oscar-winning actor in one of the leading roles.
For those who may need a brief refresher, "Unbreakable" centers on a man named David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who is the sole survivor of a horrible train wreck.

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore has been a cinematic muse for the likes of Todd Haynes, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Altman, Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg and the Coen Brothers, to name but a few. But how many of her films are classics? Let’s take a look back at 17 of her greatest roles, ranked worst to best.
Moore became a darling of independent cinema with appearances in such films as “Short Cuts” (1993), “Vanya on 42nd Street” (1994), and “Safe” (1995). It didn’t take long for Oscar voters to notice her talents, and the Academy rewarded her with four nominations in quick succession: Best Actress for “The End of the Affair” (1999) and “Far From Heaven” (2002); Best Supporting Actress for “Boogie Nights” (1997) and “The Hours” (2002). Her two bids in 2002 put her in an elite group of performers to receive lead and supporting citations in the same year.

‘Weeds’ Alum Hunter Parrish Joins Nicole Kidman in Amazon’s Mystery Thriller ‘Scarpetta’ (Exclusive)
Hunter Parrish has joined Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis in “Scarpetta,” an upcoming mystery thriller series from Blumhouse Television that has already been greenlit for two seasons by Amazon Prime Video.
The “Weeds” alum joins an ensemble that also includes Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, Rosy McEwen and Jake Cannavale.
The series, an adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels, hails from Blumhouse and Amazon MGM Studios. Liz Sarnoff will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
According to the logline, the show “follows Kay Scarpetta (Kidman), the chief medical examiner, as she returns to Virginia and resumes her former position with complex relationships, both personal and professional – including her sister Dorothy (Curtis), with plenty of grudges and secrets to uncover.”
Parrish will recur as the younger version of Benton Wesley, presumably in flashbacks. Benton is an FBI profiler who strikes up a romance with Kay in the books.

Mikey Madison is the current Best Actress Oscar frontrunner for her heartbreaking performance in the title role of Sean Baker‘s “Anora.” Her likeliest competitors are two past Oscar winners — Nicole Kidman, 57, for “Babygirl” and Angelina Jolie, 49, for “Maria” — plus six-time nominee Amy Adams, 50, for “Nightbitch” and Karla Sofia Gascon, 52, for “Emilia Pérez.”
At age 25, Madison has one advantage over her main rivals for the award: her youth. Of the 97 winners of this race, almost one-third (32) were in their 20s.
Among those ingenues to take to the stage to collect this coveted prize was Emma Stone, who was 28 when she won for “La La Land” in 2017. Stone was 35 when she picked up a bookend Oscar earlier this year for “Poor Things,” which made her the 35th Best Actress winner in her thirties.

Few actors are as endlessly versatile and compelling as Julianne Moore. Ahead of her extraordinary performance in the latest Pedro Almodóvar film, she opens up about love, death and the complexity and richness of ordinary lives
Yesterday Julianne Moore was on the subway in New York, listening discreetly to strangers. “I was sitting there and I heard one woman say, ‘Well, I know that’s exactly what you’d do, I know that’s what you’re like.’ And the other woman said, ‘It’s true, I just don’t like confrontation, I don’t!’” Perhaps it’s distracting, the idea that Moore, not only an Oscar-winning actor, but one whose airy beauty and long red hair makes her one of the most recognisable people in the world, could pass unnoticed through a carriage of chattering commuters. But please remember – or trust me – that part of Moore’s talent is the ability to transform,...

“It’s a good chance to reflect about mortality,” explained writer-director Pedro Almodóvar about his film “The Room Next Door,” which was the centerpiece selection at the 62nd New York Film Festival. “This is something that at least in my life is very present.” So when he read the proposition in Sigrid Nunez‘s novel “What Are You Going Through,” where a terminally ill woman asks her friend to assist in her suicide, the filmmaker was “very surprised.” Watch his discussion with actors Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, and John Turturro above.
“I thought that that was a very good sequence to develop between two actresses and two characters that they feel in a very different way in front of mortality,” Almodóvar added. Ultimately, Martha (Swinton) wants to end her life on her own terms, and Ingrid (Moore) is terrified at the prospect, but Swinton feels the meaning of the film...

Saoirse Ronan is getting some of the best reviews of her career for “The Outrun,” an intense drama about a woman battling her addiction to alcohol. No surprise then that she ranks among the top 5 on our Best Actress chart. She also has a featured role in Steve McQueen‘s upcoming “Blitz” as a mother in search of her missing boy in war-torn London. Currently we have her on the cusp of reaping a bid in Best Supporting Actress as well. Expect Ronan to crack the top 5 after “Blitz” drops at the London Film Festival on Wednesday (Oct. 9).

A handful of generations have no idea who Christopher Reeve was. The emotionally charged Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story examines the life of a Hollywood icon and the lasting impact of tragically pulling back the curtain during the dawn of the internet age.
Reeve played the “Man of Steel” from 1978 to 1987, starring in four Superman films. This was before special effects were perfected—when an actor’s presence had to hold your attention through a superhero film. Reeve was invincible to his adoring fans—a man who seemed unbreakable.
That all changed in May 1995, as the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story attests. Reeve suffered a broken neck and a cervical spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed for nearly a decade before his untimely death at the age of 52.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival was a success on many fronts, launching many titles into the marketplace looking for buyers, and others into the fall season, including the usual spate of Oscar contenders. But the festival continues to contract, with empty seats in the largest houses.
Many sales titles weren’t scooped up quickly. According to buyers, many were demanding too much money, which should eventually shake out. David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.
Surprisingly, “The Life of Chuck,” without a distributor, won the People’s Choice Award that usually leads to a Best Picture Oscar nomination and occasionally an actual win. The likelihood that the film will instantly become an Oscar contender the way “American Fiction” did last year remains slim.

We’re making a major switch in our Gold Derby Oscars 2025 predictions center. Previous Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton will now be in the Best Actress category for “The Room Next Door” instead of Best Supporting Actress, where she had 15/2 odds in fourth place. She will now be in a leading category with her co-star Julianne Moore, also a previous Oscar champ, who is currently in ninth place with 30/1 odds. It will take a few days or even weeks before we truly get a better picture of how Swinton starts to do when moving up the predictions chart.
According to the press release from Sony Pictures Classics, “The film follows Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), who were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life.

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

The Oscars will surely knock on Pedro Almodóvar’s door this awards season.
Pedro Almodóvar’s expansive filmography has shaped international cinema for over four decades. With his English-language directorial debut, “The Room Next Door,” fresh off winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Spanish auteur and distributor Sony Pictures Classics are setting their sights on landing Almodóvar’s first best picture nomination.

While the Telluride Film Festival this past Labor Day weekend was a launchpad for many awards contenders having a breakout moment, from Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez” to the co-leads of “The Nickel Boys,” the past three days marking the midpoint of the Venice Film Festival put a spotlight on world premieres for the latest projects from three alumni, featuring a bevy of A-List talent, many of whom already have an Academy Award.
Working backwards, Day 7 of the festival marked the first public screening of the highly anticipated “Queer” from Luca Guadagnino, the director’s eighth film to screen at Venice. The adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella “Junkie” uses quite a few of his collaborators from “Challengers,” the other film he released this year, which will have its own separate awards campaign, but the Oscars category it has been pegged for from the start is Best Actor for lead Daniel Craig.

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin is poised to make the journey from the Emmys to the Oscars thanks to his role in the red-hot film, “A Real Pain.” From Searchlight Pictures, “A Real Pain” is written and directed by actor Jesse Eisenberg, who made his debut as writer-director in 2022 with the acclaimed “When You Finish Saving The World.” This one follows Eisenberg and Culkin as a pair of mismatched cousins who tour through Poland in an attempt to honor their grandmother. Their journey is threatened to be derailed, however, when old tensions and family history, rear their head once more.
The trailer for the film promises a smart, witty comedy-drama that seems perfect for the quick-fire delivery styles of both Eisenberg and Culkin. Culkin, in particular, could really shine here in his role as Benji Kaplan. In fact, we are so excited about this film that Culkin is currently in our...

It’s a match made in heaven for a lot of Oscar watchers who are obsessed with actresses (that Venn diagram is a circle). Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star together in director Pedro Almodóvar‘s upcoming English-language feature film debut, “The Room Next Door.” Both women are Oscar winners — Almodóvar too — but it’s been a while since any of them have competed for the academy’s top honors. We’ll learn more about the film after it premieres at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, but until then, where does it stand in the Oscar race?

Love Lies Bleeding features a top-notch cast led by Kristen Stewart. The crime thriller's plot follows a romance between a reclusive gym manager and a bodybuilder, culminating in a wild and violent climax. With engaging performances from Stewart and Katy O'Brian and an intense narrative, Love Lies Bleeding is a must-watch film.
Directed and co-written by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding boasts a truly top-notch cast. In Kristen Stewart's action thriller with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Oscar-nominated actor plays Lou, a reclusive gym manager living in New Mexico. Set in 1989, Love Lies Bleeding straddles several genres. At its core, the film is a neo-noir crime thriller, but it's also a romance with dark comedy elements. However, Love Lies Bleeding's plot is straight-forward enough: a rising bodybuilder, Jackie (Katy O'Brian), drifts into town on her way to a potentially star-making competition in Las Vegas.

Have you ever danced with vampires in the pale moonlight? No? Well, neither have most of us, but we’ve all vicariously tasted the forbidden fruit of Tinseltown romance through the saga of Twilight actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
Alas, their fairytale romance wasn’t meant for eternity, and in 2013, it came to an end, leaving fans with a bittersweet aftertaste. Kristen Stewart's diverse filmography post-Twilight showcases her acting talent, disproving critics' initial assessments. Bella Swan, the character Stewart portrayed in Twilight, is the main issue, not Stewart's acting abilities. Stewart's notable post-Twilight roles include Still Alice, Spencer, and upcoming films Sacramento and Flesh Of The Gods.
Kristen Stewart's career proves one Twilight movie criticism has always been ridiculous. Stewart has a lengthy career with 50 films spanning more than two decades. Glenn Howerton is about to know what it’s like to become a source for people’s “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” after he and the Footloose actor joined the cast of Netflix‘s upcoming dark comedy series Sirens. Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton join headliners Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock for the series about sisterly love gone sour when one of them falls for a manipulative billionaire and their lavish lifestyle.

I already hate him. Peter loves the outdoors and the occasional spliff. Okay, maybe I don’t hate him as much as I thought. Perhaps I can convince him to invest in the Bank of Steve.

Sirens are dangerous creatures. If you listen to their hypnotic song, they’ll pull you into the murky depths and devour your soul. Beyond the myth, sirens exist in people who lure others into a false sense of comfort and protection, grooming them with nefarious intentions through cult-like behavior and false promises. As disturbing as that prospect is, it makes for fantastic storytelling and televised entertainment. According to reports, Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock will star in Sirens, a darkly comedic limited series coming to Netflix.

Julianne Moore seems to be having a blast in limited series “Mary & George” (Starz). But carrying a seven-part period royal dramedy is not easy. The Oscar-winning film actress (“Still Alice”) rarely does television (“Lisey’s Story”) — she started her career as a regular on “As the World Turns” — but Mary Villiers, the Machiavellian court-scheming mother of the series, was irresistible.
Moore was attracted to showrunner D.C. Moore’s scripts, she said during a recent interview with IndieWire over Zoom. “That very first scene where you find her giving birth to this child and saying, ‘Why should I keep you? Your life’s gonna be worthless?’ was arresting,” Moore said.

The Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter is putting the finishing touches on its program for the upcoming Magic of Music Gala at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City on May 9.
The fundraiser, designed to honor “Alzheimer’s heroes,” will help support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and the local California Southland community. Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery will serve as the night’s co-hosts — alongside gala chairs and business leaders Peter and Camille Goldstein — and the pair will also perform songs from their “anti-cabaret,” Two Lost Souls. Honorees for the event include the 2014 film Still Alice, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, as well as Maria Shriver and Patrick Schwarzenegger and hosts Lisa Foxx and Valentine.
“We’re excited to co-host this year’s Magic of Music Gala and perform songs from our cabaret show,” said Lynch and Flannery. “Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that deserves our critical attention.

For actress Kristen Stewart, starring in “Twilight” has been both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the worldwide popularity of the five-film vampire series helped to make Stewart one of the most recognizable actresses on the planet. Unfortunately, with that fame came the tabloids, and before long, Stewart became better known for being in gossip magazines than for her considerable skills as an actress, seemingly destined to be tagged forever as “that girl from ‘Twilight.'” Fortunately, a number of international directors such as Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larrain came to the rescue, looking past the gossip to see the potential and creating roles for Stewart that were finally worthy of her talents.
Stewart’s filmography encompasses a wide range of genres, from biopics and mother/daughter dramas (“Still Alice”) to romantic comedies and nail-biting thrillers (“Panic Room”). While she has inhabited a wide variety of characters,...

Kristen Stewart compares starring in a Marvel movie to "a f—ing nightmare." However, Stewart would sign on to do an MCU film if Greta Gerwig was the director. Stewart's current big-screen flick, the romantic thriller Love Lies Bleeding, is scoring with the critics to the tune of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kristen Stewart has come a long way since portraying Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga. Stewart’s latest big-screen role comes in co-writer and director Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding. And while promoting the romantic thriller, Stewart revealed that starring in an MCU film “sounds like a f—ing nightmare.” However, she would definitely do a Marvel movie if Barbie's own Greta Gerwig was the director. When asked if she'd make a "Marvel-type" movie, Stewart responded on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast with host Amanda Hirsch by saying:
I will likely never do a Marvel movie. Oh,...

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.
Sophie Butcher (Empire) observed: “Moore is on great form here. She spits out profanities and ultimatums in a clipped, crisp accent, wearing...

The delicious “Mary & George” may well serve up a feast of Emmy nominations. This limited series on Starz stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran). The Countess uses her son as a pawn to scheme her way to riches, titles, and influence in 1600s England.
The series, adapted by award-winning playwright D.C. Moore from Benjamin Woolley’s bestseller “The King’s Assassin,” is a sumptuous period drama. The show is in the same vein as Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Oscar-winning “The Favourite,” swapping out the usual stuffy nature of such fare for a raucous, romp through history.
Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for “Still Alice,” is on reliably good form here. She chews up every scene and commands the screen with authority. Galitzine, meanwhile, proves he is more than just the most...
