DC Studios started working on a Sgt. Rock movie in November 2024, with Luca Guadagnino as the director and Daniel Craig originally set to star. The film is based on the DC Comics character created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, who first appeared in Our Army at War in 1959.
Sgt. Franklin John Rock is a highly skilled World War II soldier known for his sharpshooting and grenade-throwing abilities. The character recently appeared in the Dcu animated series Creature Commandos, voiced by Maury Sterling.
Soon after the announcement, it’s been rumored that Daniel Craig passed on the role but Peter Safran and James Gunn clarified that Craig was never officially involved. He explained that Craig’s name was considered because he had worked with director Luca Guadagnino on Queer, but no meetings ever took place.

Yesterday afternoon, the news broke that The Penguin star Colin Farrell is in talks to play the title character in DC Studios' Sgt. Rock movie. Daniel Craig had been eyed by filmmaker Luca Guadagnino for his next feature but ultimately passed.
That wouldn't be the first time the former 007 has missed out on a superhero role as he was supposed to suit up as Thor's brother, Balder, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati sequence.
Back to Farrell, and the response to him pulling double duty in the Dcu as Sgt. Rock and The Penguin in Matt Reeves' Bat-verse has been a little mixed. There have also been questions about whether this casting will have an impact on The Batman Part II, a movie many believe will never happen at this rate.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sgt. Rock is expected to shoot in England this summer.

Colin Farrell is in talks to star as Sgt Rock in Luca Guadagnino’s World War II comic book movie, following Daniel Craig’s departure.
It looks as though Colin Farrell may well be enlisting for Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt Rock, with reports emerging today that suggest that The Banshees Of Insherin star has entered negotiations to play the grizzled combat veteran. The story has emerged (via The Hollywood Reporter) in the wake of Daniel Craig’s departure from the role last month, although reports differ as to whether the James Bond star was ever officially attached to the project.
Still, whether Farrell is a replacement for Craig or not doesn’t really matter. The actor is an incredible leading man and tends to put in his best work when working with filmmakers with more pronounced artistic inclinations. Guadagnino certainly falls into that category, and we’re already looking forward...

It's been an interesting couple of years for DC Studios. The brand new creation of Warner Bros. Discovery, it was designed to launch a brand new DC Universe that would see some of the most iconic superheroes and supervillains unite under one shared continuity, with the ability to cross over with one another when needed. It would essentially be the DC Comics version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Warner's second attempt to create one on the silver screen after the Dceu didn't take off like they had hoped.
James Gunn and Peter Safran were drafted in to help run things as the co-chairmen and CEOs of the studio, and they have been hard at work to bring it to life. If you’re a fan of movies and television, you’ve probably heard the names Colin Farrell and Luca Guadagnino a whole bunch in recent years. Now, the two seem like they’re bound to collaborate on a new Sgt. Rock movie for DC Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The news follows reports from late last year that Daniel Craig was circling the role, though DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed last month that no official offer was ever extended to the former James Bond actor. Should a deal finalize between Farrell and the studio, the film is expected to shoot this summer in England.
Farrell is no stranger to DC properties, as he portrayed The Penguin in both Matt Reeves’ The Batman and in the eponymous HBO series The Penguin. For Guadagnino, however, the flick will mark his first foray into comic book movies. The...

The Penguin star Colin Farrell is reportedly in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, replacing Daniel Craig after the latter dropped out of the Dcu movie. Daniel Craig was initially going to play the titular hero in Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock movie, but the Queer star exited the project only a couple of months after joining it. Since then, speculation about who could replace Craig put foward many relevant movie and TV stars, including The Bear's Jeremy Allen White. Now, DC Comics' Franklin John Rock may have found its live-action actor.

Stranger things have happened, but arthouse indie filmmaker Luca Guadagnino making a superhero movie is up there near the top of the list, at least of late. Granted, his adaptation of “Sgt. Rock,” a DC Comics title set in WWII, centering on a tough-as-nails infantryman, differs significantly from the average superhero movie. Still, it’s under the DC aegis and DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran’s purview, and the in-development project may have just found a new lead.

If at first you don't succeed with one name-brand actor, well, just try again with another. For some reason, DC has been trying to make comic book character Sgt. Rock happen for quite some time now. Early reports date back to the early 2000s, first with Arnold Schwarzenegger attached for the role of the gruff title character before director Guy Ritchie began circling the project in 2008. The WWII soldier ended up on the backburner when those plans fell apart over the years, only to get resurrected in the most bizarre (but strangely compelling) way imaginable. When last we heard, none other than "Queer" filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig were set to reunite on -- and lend their combined star power to -- a "Sgt. Rock" film under James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. If that seemed too good to be true, well, that's exactly what it...

After an extremely successful first season of The Penguin, Colin Farrell’s next DC project may not be in Matt Reeves’ Gotham universe. THR reports that Farrell is in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, the WWII action movie directed by Luca Guadagnino. This news comes not long after it was announced that Daniel Craig, who had been attached to the project since shortly after it was announced, had departed. However, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran mentioned at an event in February that this was only a rumor and that Craig was never officially set to star in the project. The duo also said that Sgt. Rock would begin filming this summer if they “found the perfect actor,” which they seemingly have now in Farrell.

Actor Colin Farrell may soon be playing another DC Comics character after drawing high acclaim for his role in The Penguin. The possible casting would also help further test the actor's range, as it's a role that is far unlike the Batman villain.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell is in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, a World War II action movie in the works at DC Studios. Luca Guadagnino is on board to direct the Justin Kuritzkes-penned film, and there were recent reports that he'd be reuniting with Queer actor Daniel Craig as the star. However, Craig reportedly left the project, which was followed by rumors that The Bear star Jeremy Allen White had also turned down the role.
DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran teased back in February that the project would only move forward with production this summer as planned if they "find the perfect actor.

Colin Farrell, who waddled his way to considerable acclaim for his work as a classic DC villain in The Penguin, is in negotiations to return to the world of DC with Sgt. Rock, the World War II action movie to be directed by Luca Guadagnino for DC Studios.
The move comes after Daniel Craig, who circled the feature project, officially stepped away and is now entertaining a role in Greta Gerwig and Netflix’s take on Narnia. No offer was ever made to Craig, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran said in February. At the time, they said the project would shoot this summer “only if we find the perfect actor.”
The move indeed puts Rock on track for a shoot this summer in DC Studios’ production hub in England.

Exclusive: After winning practically every single award out there for his turn in The Penguin, Colin Farrell is looking to get back in business with DC: and that’s to star in the title role of Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock.
Note, this is a different part of the DC-verse, with The Penguin attached to Matt Reeves’ The Batman sphere, whereas Sgt. Rock is part of DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s oversee. The two worlds shall never overlap.
Scheduling for the film, which Farrell wants to do, we hear, has to be balanced with his busy fall that includes the second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar and Edward Berger’s movie The Ballad of a Small Player.
Farrell takes over for Daniel Craig, who was originally kicking the tires to reteam with Guadagnino after they made Queer.

James Gunn recently confirmed what everyone assumed about how long Jason Momoa was being considered to play Lobo in the Dcu. In December 2024, Momoa was announced as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo for the Dcu in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. On the surface, this should have been shocking news, as Momoa had already played a prominent DC hero, Arthur Curry / Aquaman, in various Dceu titles. Yet, even before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hit theaters and ended the Dceu, many fans were expecting Momoa to return, just not as the king of the seven seas, but as the main man himself.
Gunn took to social media to celebrate the creation of Lobo and talked about how excited he is to see Momoa take on the role. The DC Studios co-ceo reveals that he had thought for years that Momoa should play Lobo. In the post, Gunn shared a screenshot of...

Unlike the previous Dceu, whose attempt at replicating the MCU formula failed exponentially, the new regime under James Gunn and Peter Safran is taking a more creator-driven approach than a producer-driven model. In contrast to the MCU, which is notable for announcing projects without a final draft at hand, the DC heads have been pretty vocal about prioritizing writers.

Let me start by quickly highlighting a piece I did back in December. In I Think James Gunn Needs to Slow Down Before He Repeats the Mistakes of the Dceu, my point was to bring to your attention how the new Dcu was already starting to replicate the old Dceu by announcing numerous movies that weren’t even on the Gods and Monsters slate — Teen Titans, Clayface, Sgt. Rock, Deathstroke and Bane, etc. Let’s now fast-forward to February 21. On this day, there was a small meeting between Gunn, Safran, and members of the press at the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, California — lots of updates and lots of details on upcoming projects.
It sounds like Gods and Monsters is being changed to Monsters... and whatever else we can get quickly working on the side. Aside from Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, everything else seems to either be up...

Gunn also noted that Sgt. Luca Guadagnino may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero project, but the filmmaker has now been confirmed as director for the planned Sgt. Rock movie.
Guadagnino is set to re-team with his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, who is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."
Daniel Craig was said to be in talks to play the title role (though DC Studios co-head Peter Safran insists this was not the case), but reportedly passed due to a scheduling conflict. Now, scooper Mttsh is reporting that Mike Faist - who also worked with Guadagnino on Challengers - is being considered for the part.
If this is accurate, Faist (33) would obviously be playing a significantly younger take on the character.

After scoring a SAG award for his performance as Oswald "Oz" Cobb in HBO's The Penguin, Colin Farrell addressed whether he wants to return for a second season and the answer might come as quite the disappointment for fans of the show.
Speaking with Variety at the SAG Awards, where Farrell won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series, the actor addressed whether he wants to return for The Penguin Season 2 if it were given the green light. While he stipulates that if given the right story he would consider returning, the actor made it clear that he isn't interested in pursuing a second season just because the first season was a massive success.

It's official: a Teen Titans movie for the DC Universe is in the works. DC Studios co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn confirmed that Ana Nogueira is writing a Teen Titans movie during a recent press event for the studio.
Per Variety, Safran let slip that reports of a Teen Titans movie were true after a reporter asked about the status of Nogueira's screenplay. "The script’s not ready yet. I mean, I think we said that Ana Nogueira is writing it," the DC head said, leading Gunn to remark, "We haven’t said that." The back-and-forth exchange continued with Safran stating, "No, I think it was out there," with Gunn replying, "It’s out there," implying that DC Studios had never officially confirmed the reports until now. "It was something that Ana was really impassioned about, and she turned over an amazing script for us," said Gunn about how the project came to be.

DC Studios has confirmed that a Sgt. Rock movie is in the works for the DC Universe. The confirmation came after studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were asked about Daniel Craig's departure from the World War II movie.
Per Variety, Gunn and Safran recently held a press event for DC Studios' upcoming film and television slate. When the topic of Craig exiting Sgt. Rock came up; Safran clarified that the James Bond actor "was never attached" to the movie, so he couldn't have dropped out. The DC head went on to explain that the actor had merely been floated as a possible candidate for the role due to having just appeared in Sgt. Rock director Luca Guadagnino's previous film, Queer. "But, you know, we never met with Daniel. He was just an idea," Safran said, with Gunn adding, "Well, we never really even announced Sgt. Rock.

It’s been just over two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped out their initial slate of projects for DC Studios and what would be the newly revamped Dcu, a new interconnected universe of superhero movies and films based on DC characters and kicking off in earnest with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving this summer.
So where do they stand? In a press event last week on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn and Safran held court with journalists about all they had cooking, the stuff that’s moving forward and the stuff that has lost the wind in its sails or has hit a snag. That included everything from details on the studio’s Batman films — both the Dcu film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on the non-canon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves — as well as a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update...

According to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the age of Gods and Monsters will soon be upon us. Like Marvel Studios’s “phases,” Gods and Monsters provides a roadmap for DC’s film and television initiative. Gunn and Safran shared an outline of their plan in January 2023, though, as we know, everything in Hollywood is subject to change, especially when the project is as vast as Gods and Monsters. According to the duo, they plan to release two live-action films and one animated film annually. In contrast, Max, the HBO-adjacent streaming service, wants two live-action and two animated series annually. However, 2025 is an exception, with Peacemaker Season 2 being the only live-action release this year.
“We’ve unified the brand, greenlit five theatrical films, made three live action-series and producing five animated series. We’ve also acquired and distributed a BAFTA and PGA winning documentary,” Safran said at a press conference on Friday.

Two years after becoming the co-heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran brought us up to speed on their vision of an interconnected DC across TV and film, a phase that they entitled “Gods and Monsters.”
Mostly everything they announced back in January 2023 is intact in some form or fashion, and we’ve provided an update on projects below. The duo’s plan moving forward is to release two live-action and one animated DC film per year. They’re also targeting two-live action and two animated series for Max per year. However for 2025, there’s only one series, that being Season 2 of Gunn’s Peacemaker premiering in August.

In 1984, DC Comics hit a renaissance period, putting out titles that were really connecting with readers. There was even a well-known slogan from that era: “The New DC. There’s no stopping us now.”
Just over 40 years later, a case could be made that the same mantra is coursing through DC Studios, the Warner Bros. Discovery division focused on bringing the popular comics characters to screens big and small.
“We don’t want these characters to die out,” said DC Studios co-head James Gunn at a press event Friday. “We want to bring new stories and new life, we want to introduce these characters to new generations. And I think we are doing that, slowly but surely.”
DC Studios, which Gunn runs with Peter Safran, is just over two years old. And its big test will be this summer’s Superman, which Gunn wrote and directed as the division’s inagural fim.

“Whoa, déjà vu,” exclaimed DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran as he stepped inside a modest screening room on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank. In January 2023, Safran and his co-chief James Gunn presented the inaugural slate for the newly relaunched DC Universe to a small group of journalists in this same room. Just over two years later, on Feb. 21, the duo returned to deliver their first official update about the slate to (roughly) the same group.
“It’s weird sitting here, because it does feel like no time has passed and yet so much has happened,” Gunn said.
“We look so much older,” Safran said. “That’s the biggest difference.”
“Yeah,” Gunn said. “You really do.”

Warner Bros. and DC have found a director for Clayface, and it's a filmmaker with plenty of horror experience. The news that James Gunn's Dcu was developing a movie based on the Batman villain certainly shocked many, though Mike Flanagan had been kicking around the idea for years. While Flanagan penned the script for Clayface, he is unable to direct the project due to his commitments to the upcoming Exorcist sequel. With Clayface being described as a horror movie set in the Dcu, genre fans were eager to find out which director would get to take a crack at the project.

It looks like Daniel Craig‘s reunion with “Queer” director Luca Guadagnino won’t be happening; at least not on “Sgt. Rock,” at least. Variety reports that the ex-James Bond actor isn’t involved in Guadagnino’s upcoming Dcu project. The news follows up on a report from last November with Craig attached to the Sgt. Rock role, but apparently, the actor never formally committed to the film.

After saying goodbye to the iconic role in 2021, Craig has been exploring a variety of projects, showing off his versatility as an actor. Daniel Craig has dropped out of Luca Guadagnino’s “Sgt. Rock” movie at DC Studios, TheWrap has learned. The duo were previously rumored to be circling the project for weeks on social media.
The script is written by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously wrote “Challengers” and “Queer” for Guadagnino. The film is expected to be a period piece set during World War II.
Sgt. Rock is one of DC Comics’ most famous military characters and is the leader of Easy Company. Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, he first appeared in 1959’s “Our Army at War” before getting his own series in 1977 that ran for 11 years.
Craig and Guadagnino most recently worked together on A24’s “Queer” which is based on a slender William S. Burroughs novel of the same name.

According to THR, Daniel Craig has dropped out of DC Studios’ Sgt. Rock movie. The actor was set to reunite with Queer director Luca Guadagnino on the project, but the search is now on for a replacement. The film has been scripted by Justin Kuritzkes, who worked with Guadagnino on Challengers and Queer.
The report isn’t clear on why Craig exited the project. One source says it came down to scheduling issues with his wife, Rachel Weisz, while others say that Craig wasn’t as enthusiastic about the role after Queer failed to perform as expected at the box office and during awards season. DC Studios is still hoping to start shooting Sgt. Rock this summer in the UK, and one name being considered as a replacement is Jeremy Allen White.
