Imagine a world devoid of advertisement, a world where human beings are not reduced to consumers, their desires and behavior dictated by an economic system driven by consumer capitalism.
That’s the proposition of “You Need This,” by Ryan Andrej Lough, set to have its world premiere at the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival, also known as Cph:dox, which opens today.
Produced by Academy Award winning filmmaker Adam McKay (“Don’t Look Up”), known for his satirical films blending comedy with political and economic critique, “You Need This” delivers a provocative analysis of capitalist consumerism and its effects on the planet and society.
“You Need This”
Dissecting the psychological and societal mechanisms that drive mass consumption, the film traces its roots back to the unregulated post-war American economy, when natural resources seemed infinite and the pursuit of material wealth, driven by aggressive marketing strategies, became synonymous with success and happiness.

When reality is stranger than fiction, Hollywood takes notice - these films prove it.
I caught “Last Breath” in theaters this weekend, and wow - what a ride. Beautifully shot, intense, and suspenseful - and incredibly, it’s all based on a true story. It follows a deep-sea diver who gets stranded 300 feet below the ocean with only minutes of air left… and the rescue mission to try and save his life. After the movie, I got to thinking about other great scripted movies that have associated documentaries. There are some incredible films out there that take real-life stories and turn them into gripping, cinematic experiences. So, here are my top 7 favorite scripted movies inspired by true-story documentaries.

Well, Schmoes, as 2024 finally draws to a close, we reflect on a year full of ups and downs, box office shocks and surprises, and many unexpected hits and misses. If there is one thing for sure, there are always movies highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you, and some may piss you off, but these are my honest-to-goodness perspective on the movies of 2024. The spinoff concept is as old as television itself, but its origins were humble.
Spinoffs began as creative experiments, allowing networks to capitalize on popular characters and extend the success of a hit show.
The idea was simple: take a beloved character, place them in a new setting, and hope the magic of the original show followed.
(Ollie Upton/HBO)
One of the first examples of this was The Andy Griffith Show (1960), a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show.
Audiences quickly fell in love with Sheriff Andy Taylor’s small-town wisdom and charm, and the show became a hit in its own right.
Its success even spawned its own spinoffs, like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which followed the lovable but bumbling Gomer as he joined the Marines.
These early spinoffs were often straightforward, focusing on quirky characters and simple premises.

Most people will know Charlotte Le Bon as an actress who's appeared in films like Fresh, The Walk, and Anthropoid. It's likely that those people who could pick her out of a cast don't know that she's also a certified director, as she's made a coming-of-age film that stands out from the rest by adopting the stylistic conventions of a totally unrelated genre. With her film Falcon Lake, Le Bon takes a conventional summer vacation narrative and makes it her own by filtering it through the sensibilities of a classic ghost story. In doing so, she creates an experience that isn't filled with scares so much as it's filled with the trepidations of impending adulthood.

Here stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright respond to the critics' negative reviews of their film. Robert Zemeckis's latest production saw both Hanks and Wright reunite following 1994's Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump, alongside many key players, such as screenwriter Eric Roth, cinematographer Don Burgess, and composer Alan Silvestri. Unfortunately, Here has been negatively reviewed by critics and audiences and is currently sitting at a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with The New York Times, Wright and Hanks addressed the negative reception the film has been getting. Wright defended the movie, stating that it is a simple but beautiful movie that's profoundly real and human, while Hanks explained that the response could be cynical only by "the lowest common denominator." Check out their full comments below:
Wright: It is so simple and beautiful and real and human. We all have experienced something in this movie.

Robert Zemeckis has always been about a great technological or storytelling conceit in his movies whether it’s the live-action animated hybrid of the 3x Oscar winning Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the insertion of Tom Hanks in famed historical footage in Oscar Best Picture Forrest Gump or the motion capture of The Polar Express.
However, his latest movie, the $50M Miramax financed and Sony released Here, which brings back together the Gump gang of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and scribe Eric Roth, was a situation of technology outshining the story. Critics deep sixed the multi-generation family drama which takes place in one location throughout time at a fixed angle with 36% Rotten while audiences weren’t any better with a B- CinemaScore, 57% Rt audience score and 69% positive on PostTrak.
It’s no wonder that the movie opened to $5M, and it’s unfortunate box office streak for the once blockbuster mass-appealing Back to the Future,...

Robert Zemeckis reunites with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for an ugly de-aged nightmare that boringly follows the same house throughout time
A swirl of concern and outright fear has long been following Robert Zemeckis’s unusual big bet Here, a 30-year reunion for his Forrest Gump co-stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The film, based on Richard McGuire’s comic strip turned graphic novel, was heralded as the most ambitious use of digital de-aging yet, following the pair through the decades, from teenage years to final days, as part of an ensemble of characters who have lived in the same space over time. Early stills, and a trailer, had clued us into the film being plainly terrifying but nothing had quite prepared us for just how unforgivably dull it would also be. Here lies the year’s most eerie and embarrassing misfire.

Robert Zemeckis has always been a filmmaker who doubles as a magician. His films are loaded with neat little tricks, and, as is the case with any good magician, you find yourself wondering how he pulled them off. His debut "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" used clever editing, archival footage, and stand-ins to recreate the Beatles' debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The "Back to the Future" trilogy is bursting with eye-popping special effects. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" seamlessly blended live-action and animation. "Death Becomes Her" is overloaded with gross-out gags. "Forrest Gump" found fun little ways to insert Tom Hanks into moments of televised American history. The list goes on and on. But at some point, the trickery began to overwhelm the process. His "Beowulf," "The Polar Express," and "A Christmas Carol" embraced heavy motion-capture animation with ghastly, uncanny valley results ("The Polar Express" has somehow become a recurring...

We’ve all seen countless conventional social realism representations of those sidelined by society with their gritty, miserable aesthetics, populated by problematic characters, and whilst they are undeniably powerful, director Michael Jobling wanted to explore a different way of portraying such narratives in his pilgrimage or purgatory drama short The Walk. Written by Sophie Ellerby, who came across an article about a vital local bus route being abruptly cut, and collaborated with Jobling to dive into the psyche of an individual battling the logistical obstructions of a 24-mile round trip in order to sign on, coupled with the heavy psychological weight of grief and isolation. Featuring a singular performance from BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar, The Walk – which we highlighted as one of the stand out shorts of London Film Festival 2023 – is rife with melancholy and hard hitting truths but also proffers glimmers of hope and a sensory appreciation of the grounding beauty of nature.

“The Panic” is nearly here. Production has begun on the Blue Fox Entertainment film, which stars Cary Elwes and Malcolm McDowell and was written and directed by Daniel Adams. TheWrap has exclusive photos from the movie, which you can see above and below.
“The Panic,” according to the official synopsis, is based on a true story and set in 1907 New York, “as real-life bankers J. P. Morgan and Charles Barney grapple with a financial crisis sparked by Barney’s failed attempt to manipulate the copper market. As Morgan strives to safeguard his empire he becomes entangled in a clandestine struggle involving his brilliant mistress, Belle de Costa Greene, who ran his world-famous library.”
Colm Meaney (who replaced the late Donald Sutherland just before production commenced), Anastasiya Mitrunen and Cristiana Dell’Anna also star in “The Panic.”
Michael Mailer (“The Walk”) is producing alongside Mark Williams and Eric Williams of Zero Gravity with Evan Anglin as coproducer.

Who needs a house of horrors when you can stride alongside Philippe Petit, high above the hustle & bustle of 1970s New York, on a death-defying tightrope walk that’ll make your palms sweat and your head spin? Well, Robert Zemeckis’ 2015 biographical drama, The Walk, led you on a cinematic tightrope where you may find your stomach doing somersaults.
In this vertiginous venture, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit, we were invited to tangibly tread, albeit vicariously, between the iconic Twin Towers, chasing the footsteps of the legendary French high-wire artist. Zemeckis didn’t just let you watch; he placed you on that slender cable in the air, conjuring realism through the big screen that neither Petit’s own memoir nor the gripping documentary could.

Viscerally, the director’s objective was accomplished; there were tidings of audience members experiencing nausea, anxiety, or even walking out during screenings.

The most brutal scene in The Walking Dead comic series was not violent, but rather was the emotionally gutwrenching scene in which Rick Grimes imagined a conversation with his recently deceased wife. The Walking Dead #51 showcased Rick at a psychological breaking point after the loss of his wife and daughter, highlighting the human drama at the core of the series as well as any single issue of the comic. The emotional intensity of the scene, where Rick talks to "Lori" on a disconnected phone, is a crucial moment for the character and showcases the depths of tragedy that the franchise's characters were forced to endure in order to carry on surviving in the midst of the zombie apocalypse.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Look who else is checking into The White Lotus: Charlotte Le Bon is joining the HBO anthology’s third season, replacing Francesca Corney. Sources told Deadline — which reported the recasting on Friday — that White Lotus producers swapped Corney for Le Bon because they wanted someone who appeared older in the role, the details of which are still under wraps. Le Bon is known for her roles in the films The Hundred-Foot Journey, The Walk, and The Promise. She also co-wrote and directed the 2022 coming-of-age film Falcon Lake. Corney, who’s vacating the White Lotus part, guest-starred in Mrs Sidhu Investigates and recurred in The Buccaneers last year. Actors push themselves to extreme limits, mastering new skills for their roles, like sword fighting and martial arts training. Jennifer Lawrence learned survival skills like skinning a squirrel to authentically portray her character in Winter's Bone. Tom Cruise went beyond CGI and learned to fly a helicopter for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, showcasing his dedication to authenticity.
Sometimes, actors will go to extreme lengths to master and learn a new skill solely for an acting role, no matter how grueling or difficult the process may be. This dedication to their craft is evident in their masterful performances, which often receive critical acclaim, admiration, and plenty of well-earned accolades. Some actors often spend months, sometimes years, researching, training, and living as their characters would, to ensure every nuance and detail of the performance is authentic. When the process of transforming into their character means taking on a whole new skill, the performances become even more impressive.

Forget jump scares and gore — Robert Zemeckis' 2015 film The Walk has been described by some as the most nausea-inducing non-horror film ever made. Based on the incredible true story of Philippe Petit, a Frenchman who tightrope-walked between the twin towers of the World Trade Center of New York in 1974, this biopic has viewers clinging to their armrests harder than many horror villains could ever grip their nerves. Zemeckis throws audiences onto that thin wire with jaw-dropping visuals and vertigo-inducing effects. Viewers feel the swaying, the dizzying heights, the sheer madness of a man walking more than 100 stories above concrete. Reviews from critics were like medical reports, listing symptoms of nausea, sweating, and even fainting during screenings. But it's not just the visuals that mess with viewers' minds. Zemeckis crafts a psychological thriller, weaving in the pressure of pulling off an impossible stunt, the emotional journey that Petit undertook, and the sheer audacity of defying death.

In her first feature documentary, the Oscar-nominated vérité marvel Honeyland, Tamara Kotevska shared the helm with Ljubomir Stefanov to illuminate a remote corner of the world. With her second film, she turns her attention to a headline story unfolding under all our noses, the global refugee crisis. Though the subject is more directly political this time around, the director has filtered it through a creative lens, fashioning what she calls a fairy tale. Like all good fairy tales, it offers a heightened version of reality, fusing the fantastic to the everyday. At its center is Little Amal, the 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl.

This year’s New York Film Festival will open with the North American premiere of Todd Haynes’s new film “May December,” festival organizers announced on Tuesday.
“‘May December’ is a tour-de-force of writing, acting, and directing: a film built on moment-to-moment surprise, as thought-provoking as it is purely pleasurable,” said Dennis Lim, the artistic director at the New York Film Festival, in a press release. “It cements Todd Haynes’s place as one of American cinema’s most brilliant mischief-makers and as an all-time great director of actors. Todd has been a consistent presence at the New York Film Festival for almost his entire career, and we are very excited to open this edition with one of his most dazzling achievements.”

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

The second season of original series “Almost Paradise” is set to premiere on Freevee on July 21. When hypertension forces DEA agent Alex Walker (played by Christian Kane) into early retirement, he moves to the Philippines in hopes of a quieter life. But unfortunately for him, he can’t avoid danger. Soon, the local police ask him to help solve a series of serious crimes.

Also coming to Amazon’s free streaming service in July is the incredibly meta action series “Ze Network.” In the show, David Hasselhoff plays himself as he takes a gig at an English-language theater in Germany — and we all know that Germans love David Hasselhoff. However, once there, he is recruited into an elite society of super-spies, who must work together to prevent a dangerous plot from striking the nation.

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.

Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Updated, Day 46: After visiting many, many picket lines over the last month, we’ve learned that lots of pickets signs are reused for conservation purposes. And to that we say — screw the recycling. Bring on more of those sweet corporate burns!
Fortunately, many of the scribes haven’t lost their saucy touch.
“Let them drink Dom,” says one Zaslav-themed confection.
“Ted Sarandos ate my son,” says another.
