Kathy Bates recently told a relatable story to Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) on his Dinner's On Me podcast (via TheWrap) when both she and fellow Oscar winner Meryl Streep lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2003: They drowned their sorrows with vodka at the bar.
“It was a very Joan Crawford-Bette Davis moment. She slammed her evening bag down on the bar and said, ‘I’m having a vodka, straight, neat,’ and I slammed my evening bag down, I said, ‘I’m having what she’s having,’ and we tossed it. It was a moment.”
Zeta-Jones won the Oscar for Chicago, playing Velma Kelly. The film also won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, and Best Film Editing. Meanwhile, Bates was nominated for her role as Roberta Hertzel in About Schmidt, a film that features Jack Nicholson playing completely against type. Streep...

Apparently, some fans weren’t thrilled with Thirteen’s relationship with Dr. Eric Foreman on the hit television series, House. According to star Olivia Wilde, who portrayed MD Remy Hadley, a.k.a. Thirteen, alongside co-star Omar Epps (Dr. Foreman), the actress received “insane death threats” because of the interracial love affair. Wilde revealed extra security was even hired in an interview at the Red Sea International Film Festival. Wilde said (per Variety):
"[There were] insane death threats constantly coming into the studios. Seeing what’s on television now, if you watch ‘Euphoria,’ the fact that my character was shocking and groundbreaking, then, it’s like, no, it’s nothing."
Wilde, who portrayed Thirteen from Season 4 through Season 8, was nominated for four Teen Choice Awards (2008-2011) and a Screen Actors Guild Awards nod (Ensemble nomination) during her time on House. Today, Wilde is not only a renowned performer, but an influential filmmaker.

Clint Eastwood may first have been known as an actor, due in part to his starring roles in Westerns, including the iconic Dollars trilogy, but he's now just as well known for his directing. Eastwood's first directing gig was Play Misty for Me in 1971, and he followed that film up with others like High Plains Drifter (1973), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), and, of course, Unforgiven (1992).
Eastwood continued to appear in films throughout the 2000s, but the 2010s saw his career shift to one more focused on directing. He gave audiences films like American Sniper (2014), Sully (2016), and Richard Jewell (2019), while also doing double duty as star and director in The Mule (2018) and Cry Macho (2021). At 94 years old, most in Hollywood would be long retired, but Eastwood put out yet another film this year, and it's been a success with critics and audiences.

In an industry that is sometimes criticized for playing it safe and holding back honesty, actor Paul Walter Hauser is like a breath of fresh air. Following him on social media, you'll find that he's refreshingly honest, even going as far as to criticize his own work. Like many cinephiles out there, he's also an active user on Letterboxd, rating films left and right on the app, including his own. It was one such recent rating, for his 2019 film Richard Jewell, that got the attention of someone on X, and it's because his rating wasn't positively glowing.
On X, Hauser took the time to respond to a user who noticed his Letterboxd rating of Richard Jewell, a film in which he was directed by Clint Eastwood and played the titular character, was a bit low given his ample participation in the film. The user wrote, "Paul Walter Hauser giving Richard Jewell as 3.5 on Letterboxd,...

Paul Walter Hauser is an active Letterboxd user — sometimes even critiquing his own movies.
On Wednesday night, the actor took to X to respond to a post that reads, “Paul Walter Hauser giving Richard Jewell a 3.5 on Letterboxd, a movie in which he quite literally plays the title character, is one of the funnier things I’ve come across on that app.”
Hauser replied: “If I think The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler’s List are 5/5, and Richard Jewell is not a perfect movie/bonafide classic, what’s wrong with giving an honest rating? It’s a good film that is definitely worth watching. A 3.5 out of 5 is not a slight. It’s reality.”
Hauser starred in the 2019 Clint Eastwood-directed crime thriller as Richard Jewell, the man who found a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and alerted authorities to evacuate — only to later be wrongly accused of planting the explosives himself.

The star of Clint Eastwood's 2019 drama defends his Letterboxd rating for the film after being taken to task on social media. Eastwood’s long and storied directorial career began way back in 1971 when the star took the helm on the thriller Play Misty For Me. Over 50 years later, the 94-year-old Hollywood legend is back with his 40th film as a director, the courtroom drama Juror #2.
In a filmography as rich and varied as the one Eastwood produced in the years between Play Misty for Me and Juror #2, there are bound to be a few stinkers alongside the masterpieces. Eastwood-directed films receiving the most critical pans (via Rotten Tomatoes) include The 5:17 to Paris, The Rookie, Firefox, J. Edgar and Hereafter. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Eastwood’s triumphs include Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter, Honky Tonk Man, the aforementioned Juror #2 and Pale Rider.

Clint Eastwood’s new movie “Juror No. 2” had its premiere closing night screening at the American Film Institute’s festival in Los Angeles on Sunday. However, the 94-year-old legendary director was not there himself.
AFI president Bob Gazzale addressed the audience. He said Eastwood “could not be here with us tonight.” Still, Gazzale called the event a celebration of Eastwood’s extensive career both in front of and behind the camera. This includes his iconic “Dirty Harry” character and direction of films like “Richard Jewell” and “Play Misty for Me.”
The leads in “Juror No. 2,” Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult, attended the premiere. Collette and Hoult had previously worked together in 2002’s “About a Boy.” Collette expressed gratitude for the chance to collaborate with Eastwood. Clint Eastwood didn’t turn up for “Jury” duty in Los Angeles on Sunday, but that didn’t stop his lead actors and a few hundred moviegoers from sending him well wishes.
The 94-year-old screen legend’s latest film, “Juror No. 2,” served as the closing night gala screening for this year’s AFI Fest. At the top of the program held at the historic Tcl Chinese Theaters, AFI president Bob Gazzale informed disappointed fans that Eastwood “could not be here with us tonight, but we are here for him.”
After noting his dozens of film credits – including the “Dirty Harry” franchise and directorial efforts like “Richard Jewell” and “Play Misty for Me” – Gazzale introduced “Juror No. 2” stars Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult. The fall festivals — starting with Venice and through Telluride and Toronto — give us a map of what the rest of the year in movies looks like. These are the films that will dominate year-end discussions, top 10 lists, and, of course, the Oscars and the awards that precede and predict them. These are the movies that maybe you adore or anticipate now, but might get sick of hearing about by March 2, the date of the Oscars. So turns the awards season wheel, but at least the Oscars are closer to February again.
And the tone-setting trifecta of Venice, Telluride, and TIFF isn’t even the half of it, as regional festivals continue to pop up through December and, of course, New York and AFI Fest are still to come. This year’s New York Film Festival is lacking in top-ticket world premieres but still offers a robust greatest-hits selection of the fall fests that were,...

AFI Film Festival has announced that Warner Bros.’ “Juror No. 2,” the new thriller from Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood, will have its world premiere as the closing night film on Sunday, Oct. 27. The studio will then release the movie in limited theaters on Friday, Nov. 1.
Written by Jonathan Abrams, the film follows Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, struggles with a severe moral dilemma — one he could use to sway the jury’s verdict and potentially convict or free the accused killer. “Juror No. 2” also stars Oscar nominee Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), as well as Zoey Deutch, Chris Messina, Gabriel Basso, Leslie Bibb and Kiefer Sutherland.

Paul Walter Hauser has drawn some very high acclaim for his film and TV roles. He may be taking on his biggest role yet as the star of an upcoming Chris Farley biopic, but the actor feels this is a part he's spent his life preparing for.
In an interview with Variety, Hauser addressed his role in the untitled biopic. As a longtime fan of the late Saturday Night Live star, Hauser noted that he's "been practicing to play Chris Farley my entire life." With that noted, the Richard Jewell star admitted that it will still be difficult to turn in a well-received performance, given how people may be much more judgmental with someone playing such a beloved celebrity as opposed to another original character.

Christina Sandera, the companion of Clint Eastwood for the past decade, has died, the actor-director announced. She was 61.
“Christina was a lovely, caring woman, and I will miss her very much,” he said in a statement released Thursday night.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that no further information would be forthcoming. A representative from the Monterey County Health Department later told the New York Post that she died that day of a heart attack.
The couple were very quiet about their relationship.
They reportedly met when she was working as a hostess at Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and started dating in 2014.
A longtime Carmel resident, she accompanied the onetime Carmel mayor to the 2015 Academy Awards when American Sniper was up for six Oscars including best picture and on the red carpet for Sully (2016), The Mule (2018), The 15:17 to Paris (2018) and Richard Jewell (2019).

Despite a tumultuous Paramount-Skydance merger, some box office blunders and a painful presidential debate, the summer of 2024 may go down as the summer of Paul Walter Hauser.
Hauser began his career as a journeyman actor, playing supporting roles in popular films such as “Cruella,” “I, Tonya,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Da 5 Bloods.” In 2019, he landed his first major leading role in Clint Eastwood’s drama “Richard Jewell,” and four years later, Hauser scored an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his performance as Larry Hall in the Apple TV+ series “Blackbird.”
But starting in March 2024, a flurry of projects starring Hauser were unveiled. In a matter of weeks, it was announced that Hauser would star in Marvel’s “Fantastic Four,” an untitled Chris Farley biopic, a “Naked Gun” reboot, “Press Your Luck,” the Mark Wahlberg action-comedy “Balls Up” and the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.” He also voiced Embarrassment in “Inside Out 2,...

Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

Upon securing a spot in the 2024 Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) officially shattered the Academy Awards record for longest span between fourth and fifth acting nominations. Following her two Best Actress wins for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she had last been recognized in that category for “Nell” (1995), making for a general nomination gap of 29 years. Coincidentally, she took this particular distinction from fellow “Silence of the Lambs” winner Anthony Hopkins, who waited 22 years between his supporting bids for “Amistad” (1998) and “The Two Popes” (2020).
Previously, the female record for longest wait for a fifth nomination was 12 years, as shared by Julianne Moore and Frances McDormand. Considering gaps between any two consecutive acting nominations, Foster ranks well behind overall record holder Judd Hirsch, whose first and second career notices for “Ordinary People” (1981) and “The Fabelmans” (2023) came 42 years apart. His female counterpart is Helen Hayes (39 years...

“Thank you to the voters in the TV academy, thank you mom and dad, you nurtured what I had in me. Dennis Lehane, Taron Egerton, your talent can move boulders. If I look tall it’s cause I’m standing on both of their shoulders,” rapped out Paul Walter Hauser starting one of the most unusual Emmy acceptance speeches of the night for Black Bird.
He’s taking home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie for his super creepy great nuanced performance as serial killer Larry Hall on the Apple TV+ show. Also unconventional, Hauser was crunching on something in his seat when they called his name and still chewing when he took the stage.

Julianne Moore is predicted to land her sixth Oscar nomination thanks to her delicious role in Todd Haynes‘ Netflix melodrama “May December.” In this one, Moore features as an older woman named Gracie who is married with kids to Charles Melton‘s much younger Joe. The two are the subject of an upcoming movie and actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) visits them in order to properly portray Gracie. The in-movie movie will explore their scandalous affair, which started years ago when Joe was only 13.
This isn’t the first time Moore has been exquisite in a Haynes movie, of course, as the two are frequent collaborators. “Far From Heaven” is perhaps their best work together so far but “May December” is right up there and the same can be said about Moore’s supporting performance. Indeed, we are predicting that Moore will indeed be nominated for Oscar number six alongside predicted...

Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) switching from Best Supporting Actress to Best Actress feels like some time ago now but the impact of that move can still be felt as the former category is the most open race we have this year. Such an open race, however, leads to excitement and surprise, leaving the door open for any number of contenders to take the lead in this race.
And no performance deserves to be out in front more in this category than Julianne Moore‘s role in Todd Haynes‘ “May December.” Moore collaborates with Haynes again after they worked together in several movies including “Far From Heaven,” but Netflix’s “May December” is a bold new entry in their canon that you can now catch in US theaters after it released on November 17. The movie will drop on Netflix on December 1.

Quentin Tarantino, one of the most influential and acclaimed filmmakers of his generation, has announced that his 10th and final film will be titled “The Movie Critic”. The film will be set in 1977 and will follow the life of Jim Sheldon, a film critic for the Hollywood Press, who is described by Tarantino as “Travis Bickle if he were a film critic”. Travis Bickle is the protagonist of Martin Scorsese’s classic 1976 film “Taxi Driver”, played by Robert De Niro, who is a lonely and unstable taxi driver who becomes obsessed with saving a teenage prostitute from a pimp.
Tarantino has confirmed that he will be filming his final movie in Los Angeles, the city where he started his career as a director. He said, “I started directing movies here and it is only fitting that I shoot my final motion picture in the cinema capital of the world.”

Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast hosts Michael Schneider, Clayton Davis, Emily Longeretta and Jazz Tangcay gathered on Wednesday, just hours after the Television Academy announced this year’s Emmy nominations, to dissect the news — from the big winners like “Succession,” to the shocking omissions (no Harrison Ford or Elizabeth Olsen), and then the nice surprises. The nominations were telling on a number of fronts — including the current assessment that we may very well see a beat “Succession”/”Ted Lasso” dominance.
Did the voting procedural changes help bring in a wider group of nominees? No. And will voters pick straight tickets of “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” nominees? Quite possible. Who will win the “SNL”/”Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” smackdown? What are our favorite faceoffs this year?
From snubs and surprises to big wins and the usual befuddlement, the Roundtable tackles it all in this week’s episode. Listen below!

Paul Walter Hauser has made hamburgers the latest red carpet accessory.
The actor has found himself making the rounds lately thanks to his stunning turn as serial killer Larry Hall in Apple TV Plus’ limited series “Black Bird,” a role that has already netted him a SAG Award nomination and wins from the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. After Jamie Lee Curtis asked him to bring her a burger to the next event, Hauser showed up at the Critics Choice Awards with a patty – only to learn Curtis couldn’t attend due to Covid. He later proposed to her with a smashburger at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards and brought 20 burgers to the SAG Awards, where he handed them out to the likes of Adam Sandler. When Hauser’s name was called amongst the nominees in his category, he perfectly timed a blissful bite on camera.

By the time "Dirty Harry" came along, Clint Eastwood was already a movie star. So, it's fair to say that this film not only solidified his place in the Hollywood firmament but also crystallized his star persona. The role of Harry Callahan took someone who was already the embodiment of traditional toxic masculinity, and cranked that up to 11, captivating enough people to make it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 1971. "Dirty Harry" features so many things I find objectionable, yet I cannot say that the film isn't an entertaining watch. That is due in large part to Eastwood's performance, clearly enjoying playing a hard-ass cop who doesn't play by the rules.
While Eastwood and "Dirty Harry" are now inextricably linked thanks to the five-film franchise that it spawned (six if you count the unofficial spiritual sequel "Gran Torino"), he was not the first actor the studio looked to star in the film.

Despite finding success in the comedy and drama TV categories, thanks to “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show,” respectively, Apple TV+ has yet to break into the limited series/TV movie races at the Golden Globes. Now, it might have finally booked its ticket with the miniseries “Black Bird,” which is expected to be admitted three times over, per our combined odds, for series, actor (Taron Egerton) and supporting actor (Paul Walter Hauser).
Based on James Keene and Hillel Levin‘s 2010 memoir “In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption,” the six-part series follows Keene (Egerton), a one-time high school football star and decorated policeman’s son-turned-drug dealer, as he is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison and presented with a unique choice: Either he enters a maximum security prison for the criminally insane, befriends suspected serial killer Larry Hall...

The comedic whodunit “Confess, Fletch” features the best leading-man role that star Jon Hamm has enjoyed since his breakthrough performance as Don Draper in the exceptionally rich Madison Avenue drama “Mad Men.”
In the last seven years, Hamm has stood out in a few decent supporting roles — “Bad Times at the El Royale,” “Richard Jewell” — and some voice acting performances, particularly Tony Stark in the Marvel animated comedy “M.O.D.O.K.” and a brief cameo as “Don Grouper” in a 2016 episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
Hamm gets to show more of his range in “Confess, Fletch,” a breezy murder mystery based on the second of Gregory McDonald’s “Fletch” novels, the first of which was adapted into a cultishly revered 1985 Chevy Chase vehicle.

Screenwriter Billy Ray has confirmed that a sequel to Nicole Kidman‘s viral AMC Theatres ad is already in the works.
“I got a text from the chairman of AMC about a month ago asking me if I would write the next one, and of course the answer to that is yes,” Ray told Vanity Fair. “It’s already written.”
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, known for penning films like “The Hunger Games,” “Richard Jewell,” “Flightplan” and “Captain Phillips,” was brought to the AMC project by Kidman, with whom he’d previously worked on the 2015 film “Secret in Their Eyes” and Adrian Lyne‘s forthcoming adaptation of author A.S.A Harrison‘s “The Silent Wife.”
Ray added that when Kidman first asked him to write the ad, he decided to do it “as a favor” — that is, until his agent got involved.

Paul Walter Hauser Lost 40 Pounds to Play Suspected Serial Killer Larry Hall: See the Transformation
Paul Walter Hauser transformed himself mind, body and soul for the role of suspected serial killer Larry Hall. The Richard Jewell star lost 40 pounds to play the notorious Hall, who is suspected to be responsible for the murders of up to 45 women in the '80s and '90s, for the upcoming Apple TV+ series Black Bird. While he dropped the pounds, Hauser credits the series' hair and make-up teams for perfecting Hall's hair and his infamous muttonchop sideburns, which Hall called "burnsides." After seeing his total makeover, it's surprising to learn that Hauser initially hesitated to take the role. He says the project's intense subject matter gave him pause. "To be...

Rashaad Ernesto Green will direct the feature film “68,” inspired by the true story of the Olympians who gave the black power salute on the podium, MGM, Participant and MacRo announced on Thursday.
Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Billy Ray wrote the script that centers on sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos and chronicles their lives from track athletes at San Jose State to Olympic medalists and activists at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, where Smith and Carlos both raised their fists in solidarity and in support of human rights.
“Still incredibly powerful and relevant, I’m honored for the opportunity to bring Tommie and John’s riveting story to life; to portray the weight of the world these two giants had on their shoulders and the self-determination, courage and sacrifice it took for them to stand up for all of us,” Green said in a statement.

This year’s Oscar race is in a bio rhythm, with a huge percentage of films based upon real people and events.
Merriam-Webster defines “biopic” as simply a biographical movie. That’s true, but there’s a wide range under that umbrella term, as this year’s contenders remind us.
They include films that span several years, including: “A Journal for Jordan” and “King Richard”; some cover multiple decades, such as “House of Gucci,” the Aretha Franklin pic “Respect” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
Other films, including “Being the Ricardos,” focus on a moment in time, which becomes a prism for exploring the era and the lives of various individuals.
Narrative films are not documentaries, so every pic takes liberty with the facts. Some take this to the extreme, such as “Spencer” (in which the life of Princess Diana borders on a horror film and begins with the disclaimer...

Jon Hamm will voice the lead character of the new Fox animated comedy series “Grimsburg.”
The series, which is slated to debut on the broadcaster in 2023, will see Hamm play Marvin Flute, maybe the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown or correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. But there’s one mystery he still can’t crack — his family. Now that he’s back in Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret or three, Flute will follow every lead he’s got to redeem himself with the ex-wife he never stopped loving, even if it means hanging out with the son he never bothered to get to know.
“I am very excited to be involved in the Fox animation universe,” Hamm said. “A universe I have been actively watching since the early nineties. The opportunity to get to bring a project like ‘Grimsburg’ to life that is so particular and unique,...

Disney’s “Shang-Chi” is heading for a box office three-peat.
The Marvel superhero adventure, starring Simu Liu and Awkwafina, is projected to generate roughly $17 million between Friday and Sunday, which would represent a decline of around 50% from the weekend prior. Though two new movies — Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” and “Copshop” with Gerard Butler — are opening nationwide, neither are expected to defeat “Shang-Chi” on domestic box office charts.
Since debuting in theaters over the Labor Day holiday, “Shang-Chi” has amassed $146 million in the U.S. and Canada and looks on pace to become the first pandemic-era release to cross $200 million at the domestic box office. So far, no movie has been able to crack that milestone but Disney and Marvel’s “Black Widow” ($183 million) and Universal’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($172 million) have come closest.
In pre-covid times, it wouldn’t have been particularly notable for “Shang-Chi” to hit $200 million in North America.

With his latest film “Cry Macho,” Clint Eastwood treads where many men have tried, but failed, before. The neo-Western is based on a book by N. Richard Nash from 1975, and since then, a handful of Hollywood leading men have tried to tackle the role of a washed-up horse breeder on the road to redemption, from Roy Scheider and Burt Lancaster, to Pierce Brosnan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. At 91, director and star Clint Eastwood is finally taking the reins with his film set to release on September 17 in theaters and simultaneously on HBO Max from Warner Bros. on September 17. Watch the trailer for the film below.
In the drama written for the screen by author Nash (who died in 2000) with contributions from co-writer Nick Schenk (Eastwood films “Gran Turino” and “The Mule”), Eastwood plays a decorated onetime rodeo star who, after losing his wife and child, spirals into alcohol despair. It’s the late 1970s,...

Much loved actress Kathy Bates celebrated her 73rd birthday yesterday and many of her fans came out on Twitter to mark the occasion. Having been in the business for almost 50 of those years, Bates has become an icon of both stage and screen, with her break-through and still most memorable role being Annie Wilkes in the film version of Stephen King's Misery. She also appeared in The Waterboy, Titanic and About Schmidt. She has recently made an impact on TV appearing regularly in American Horror Story.
Bates was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and was one of three children. After studying theater at school, she moved to New York in 1970 to pursue her career in acting. Clint Eastwood’s next movie, “Cry Macho,” has landed a release date from Warner Bros. this fall.
“Cry Macho,” which Eastwood directed, produced and stars in, will open in theaters and on HBO Max — for the first month — on October 22, 2021.
The film is based on a book by N. Richard Nash and is a drama about a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.
“Cry Macho” also stars Eduardo Minett and Dwight Yoakam. The producers alongside Clint are Albert S. Ruddy, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier. Nick Schenk...
