AMC Networks’ Shudder has announced the titles that will be available on the streaming service next month. The Shudder April 2025 slate includes horror, thriller, and supernatural titles.

The April schedule includes 825 Forest Road, Dead Mail, Fréwaka, The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs Season 7, Shadow of God, and repertory titles.

Shudder’s expanding library of films, TV series, and original content is available on most streaming devices in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

“Vigdís,” the four-part biopic about Iceland’s iconic former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, widely known as the world’s first democratically elected female head of state, will bow Feb. 17 at the Berlinale Series Market Selects, courtesy of REinvent International.

The show – which chronicles Finnbogadóttir’s journey from 1948, when she finished secondary school, up until her presidential election in 1980 – lands in Berlin off the back of a strong national run on pubcaster RÚV, where it premiered on Jan. 1.

“It’s one of the most successful TV series broadcasted in Iceland, with around 60% accumulated viewings per episode,” boasts producer Rakel Garðarsdóttir, co-creator with co-writers Ágústa M Ólafsdóttir and Björg Magnúsdóttir (“The Minister”). In the small nation of 390,000 inhabitants, ruled by two women- President Halla Tómasdóttir and Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, the series about Finnbogadóttir, who championed equality and women’s rights during her presidency (1980 to 1996), has sparked a national craze for everything related to Vigdís.

“The School of Housewives,” a popular Icelandic drama that debuted last year on public broadcaster RÚV, is a major contender for this year’s Göteborg Nordic Series Script Award, the biggest prize for TV screenwriting in Scandinavia.

The series turns Hekla, who, after being in and out of rehab since she was a teenager, enrolls in The School of Housewives – a real facility based in Reykjavik – in order to get her daughter back from foster care. But she, and several characters, can’t help but wonder, is learning to knit, bake and clean going to make any of them more fit mothers?

Through their shared struggles, these women find strength in one another, forming a community that empowers them all.

IndieWire can exclusively announce that “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” director is boarding “A Lien,” one of the titles on the Oscar shortlist for Best Live-Action Short, as an executive producer via his production company Hyperobject Industries.

Written and directed by brothers Sam and David Cutler-Kreutz, who Vimeo just recently added to their list of Breakout Creators of 2024, “A Lien” highlights the often traumatizing experience surrounding the path toward permanent residence in the United States, and the unseemly tactics the Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses in order to round up more detainees.

Industry veterans Lloyd Braun, Sarah Bremner and Noah Oppenheim have launched Prologue Entertainmentbacked by Jeff Zuckerand RedBird Capital Partners.

Prologue will develop and produce features and premium scripted series and has boarded several projects including Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled White House thriller at Netflix, written by Oppenheim and expected in 2025.

The Root Of All Evil at Atomic Monster and Blumhouse is a psychological thriller based on Ravi Somaiya’s reporting on an exorcism in Mexico City. Sean Tretta is adapting the screenplay.

Rounding out the initial slate is female survival thriller Trapped, based on Jill Blankenship’s Black List screenplay.

A trio of entertainment veterans — Lloyd Braun, Sarah Bremner and Noah Oppenheim — have come together to form independent production studio Prologue Entertainment, with an investment from Jeff Zucker and RedBird Capital Partners.

Prologue, with offices in New York and L.A., is set up to develop and produce premium scripted series and film content, and will house existing projects that are already under way. According to the company, it will be able to finance and co-finance productions. Braun, a longtime TV exec, most recently was chairman of WME; Bremner is a former Netflix film executive and most recently served as president of Ava DuVernay’s Array Filmworks; and Oppenheim was formerly president of NBC News.

The amount of RedBird Capital’s investment in Prologue is not being disclosed. RedBird’s investment will be overseen by Zucker, the former CEO of CNN who is an operating partner at RedBird.

Prologue was officially unveiled on Thursday as a studio that will develop and produce premium scripted series and film content. With Zucker and RedBird’s backing, they’ll also finance and co-finance productions.

Upcoming projects already in the works from Prologue include Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Netflix film, which was written by Oppenheim and is currently in post-production. Prologue is also behind the Robert De Niro-led Netflix series “Zero Day,” created by Oppenheim, Eric Newman and Michael S. Schmidt, as well as the Blumhouse/Atomic Monster psychological exorcism thriller, “The Root of All Evil” and female survival thriller “Trapped,” from a Black List screenplay by Jill Blankenship.

While manhwa are usually associated with action-packed power fantasies like Solo Leveling and Omniscient reader, the medium has plenty more to offer, with villainess manhwa being one of the most underrated genres. The villainess trope has quickly skyrocketed in popularity since its inception, almost becoming synonymous with the otome isekai genre, and it isn't hard to see why.

Antagonists are often considered to be the most compelling characters in a story, regardless of the medium in which they appear. As such, centering a story around the antagonist instead of the typical lead offers a nice change of pace while opening up new avenues of storytelling. This trend has taken root in the form of the "trashy Mc trope" in shonen manhwa, and the "villainess trope" in the case of shojo manhwa, and though such stories are a dime a dozen, a handful of villainess manhwa do stand out for their subversive stories and exceptional writing.

Victoria Beckham’s upcoming Netflix documentary series is finally able to name its director.

Nadia Hallgren, who directed the Michelle Obama doc “Becoming,” is helming the show, Variety can reveal.

The as-yet-untitled series, which started production in August, will follow Beckham’s journey from Spice Girls superstardom in the ‘90s to modern fashion maven. As per the logline, “Her Posh Spice days may be behind her, but today Beckham is on a journey to build a fashion empire — and now, fans will be able to see the story behind it all.”

Spearheading a new strategy to grow an international slate, Israel-based Yes Studios has picked up “Haze,” an Icelandic crime series produced and created by Sigurjón Kjartansson.

The eight-part drama stars Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, whose acting credits include “Succession” and “Game of Thrones.”

Produced by Kjartansson’s banner S800, “Haze” has already been commissioned by Icelandic broadcaster Ruv. Filming will begin this Summer for an expected delivery in 2026.

Yes Studios has boarded international distribution rights for the series and also holds rights for the scripted format. The company will formally launch the series to buyers at next week’s Content London where it’s expected to kick off pre-sales.

Celebrated actor Manisha Koirala and filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane discussed the evolving landscape between theatrical and streaming platforms during a session at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, where Koirala also revealed plans to write a comedy book about 1990s and 2000s actresses adapting to Gen Z culture.

Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.

Especially around Halloween.

USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.

An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.

Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.

That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.

Netflix has unveiled a deep slate of originals out of Argentina including an animated adaptation of iconic comic strip Mafalda from Oscar-winning director Juan José Campanella. Another adaptation is El Eternauta, based on the graphic novel of the same name. There will also be a local version of dating series Love is Blind and a three-part doc about Argentine soccer star Ángel Di María.

The streamer’s Made In Argentina slate was presented at an event in Buenos Aires and comprised a whopping 19 projects. The standout titles included Mafalda, which has iconic status in Argentina where it ran as a comic strip in various newspapers. Created by cartoonist Quino, it follows the titular little girl and her family and friends.

Campanella, who helmed the Oscar-winning The Secret In Their Eyes (Best Foreign Language Film), will be director, screenwriter and showrunner. Mundoloco CGI, the animation studio he co-founded, is producing the series.

Buenos Aires – Mafalda, the beloved and wily six-year-old drawn into acclaim by celebrated Argentine artist Quino, will bring her socially-conscious hijinks to the screen. News of the adaptation, which will be ushered in by Oscar-winner Juan José Campanella, was announced Monday evening as Netflix unveiled their 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ slate to a spirited crowd of industry and media professionals.

Campanella will direct, produce and showrun the project, while Gastón Gorali co-pens and acts as general producer of the Netflix Original series and Sergio Fernández boards as production director. Netflix and Campanella and Gorali’s Mundoloco CGI, the studio behind “Metegol,” the largest Latin American animated production to date, produce.

“Mafalda and her friends not only made me laugh a lot, but from time to time, they sent me to the dictionary. And each new word I learned came with the reward of a new laugh,” Campanella revealed in a July statement.

Internationally celebrated Icelandic actors Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hera Hilmar are set to star in “Reykjavik Fusion,” an Iceland-set crime thriller series that is rapidly racking up pre-sales in multiple territories.

The series’ deals underscore an increasingly attractive financing model, at least for selectively produced foreign-language shows, based on tying down partners and pre-sales among local broadcasters in Europe rather than waiting for a U.S. deal with a streamer for the U.S.

“It’s a dynamic ecosystem in Europe right now, full of potential partners,” said Erik Barmack, whose Wild Sheep Content co-produces and handles the international distribution of “Reykjavik Fusion.”

Icelandic actor/director Baltasar Kormákur is a member of a growing cadre of international filmmakers who make films at home as well as Hollywood. Kormákur is best known for studio action adventures such as “Contraband” (2012), his remake of his 2000 breakout “101 Reykjavik.” Producer/star Mark Wahlberg took a shine to the rugged director, and went on to make another film with him, the $80-million actioner “2 Guns” (2013), co-starring Denzel Washington.

The Palm Springs International ShortFest has announced the juried and audience award winners for its 2024 edition, which took place June 18-24. Development on the highly anticipated prequel series titled Crystal Lake was reportedly stopped in May 2024, which is a major loss for fans of classic Jason Voorhees films and the horror genre at large. Although the original Friday the 13th movie from 1980 essentially acts as the prequel to the franchise, I'm sold on just about anything that involves A24 and horror, so having the project come to an indefinite halt is certainly not inspiring to hear.

Baltasar Kormákur is back directing — but this time it’s not a survival drama, it’s a romance.

The “Adrift” and “Everest” filmmaker directs Focus Features’ “Touch,” based on the bestselling novel by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson. The film tells a romantic and thrilling story that spans several decades and continents, with one widower trying to find his first love who disappeared 50 years ago.

Director Kormákur co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Ólafsson. The original Icelandic novel was published by Ecco/Harper Collins in the U.S. in August 2022. The film was shot in Iceland and Japan.

There have already been several high points on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour, and Sunday night’s show in Columbus, Ohio, provided another one.

The Boss and co. turned in an epic three-hour, 30-song set that saw “Youngstown,” “Streets of Fire,” and “I’m Goin’ Down” all performed live for the first time since at least 2017. The choice to kick off the show with “Youngstown” was especially appropriate as it was written about Youngstown, Ohio, located just two-and-half hours away from Columbus. Meanwhile, “Streets of Fire” has only been performed by Springsteen 23 times since 1978, and not since 2017.

MipDoc keynote speaker Dawn Porter is coming to Cannes to discuss not only the challenging doc marketplace, but also how to work and prosper within it.

In the last few years the doc industry has favored a handful of big-name filmmakers, like Porter, who are commissioned to make one-off films or docuseries. Over the last 12 months two of Porter’s docus were released: “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court” which was financed and distributed by Showtime and “The Lady Bird Diaries,” which was financed and distributed by Hulu/ABC News.

But budgets for commissioned projects, even those with well-known documentarians attached, have diminished significantly since the pandemic, due in part to corporate consolidation. The shrinking number of nonfiction distributors has hit directors of independently made docs especially hard. The major streaming services, who were spending millions to acquire indie fare five years ago, lost interest in garnering titles out of festivals.

If you needed any proof that Bruce Springsteen is fully recovered from health ailments that derailed his 2023 tour (some of which may or may not have been the result of Larry David), look no further than the performance he and the E Street Band turned in at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Thursday night.

The show ran a grand total of three hours and 18 minutes and featured a sprawling 32-song setlist including several tracks that hadn’t been played live in close to a decade. What’s more, Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, made her first appearance on the 2024 leg of the tour, joining her husband for performances of “Tougher Than the Rest” and “Fire.”

The film festival’s jury announced the winners of the festival’s major awards on Thursday, giving out prizes for narrative feature, documentary feature, and a variety of short, episodic, and Xr categories.

The narrative feature competition was won by “Bob Trevino Likes It,” Tracie Laymon’s dramedy that stars Barbie Ferreira as a young woman who seeks to heal wounds from her relationship with her abusive father by befriending an unrelated man with the exact same name (John Leguizamo).

The top documentary prize went to Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls’ groundbreaking documentary “Grand Theft Hamlet,” which followed a group of actors staging a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” inside “Grand Theft Auto Online” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
