In this throwback interview, Subhash K Jha revisits the film and re-shares his conversation with Rajkummar Rao about the drama Trapped, which released in 2017.
What would you do if you were trapped in a highrise for days without food, water, or company? Eat a bird, although you are vegetarian? Check. Drink your own urine to quench your thirst? Check. Talk to a rat, for company’s sake? Check.
The talented Rajkummar Rao, no stranger to internalized performances, immerses himself in Vikram Motwane’s Trapped with such arresting authenticity that after a while, we cease to watch the skill that underlines the outstanding performance.
All we see is the suffering of the trapped soul, his desperation to get out of that apartment where Shourya is locked away, far from civilization, though not even a road away from the bustle. Unlike other great survival dramas like Robert Zemeckis’ Castaway or Ang Lee...

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Adam McKay is reentering the Oscar race in support of a new, timely project.
IndieWire can exclusively announce that “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” director is boarding “A Lien,” one of the titles on the Oscar shortlist for Best Live-Action Short, as an executive producer via his production company Hyperobject Industries.
Written and directed by brothers Sam and David Cutler-Kreutz, who Vimeo just recently added to their list of Breakout Creators of 2024, “A Lien” highlights the often traumatizing experience surrounding the path toward permanent residence in the United States, and the unseemly tactics the Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses in order to round up more detainees.
“‘A Lien’ is pure cinematic tension,” said McKay via statement. “And then it hit me, this is reality for thousands of people every day.” The filmmaker is known for being outspoken on social media about the many issues Americans are facing,...

Vikramaditya Motwane is one of the rare artists working in the Hindi film industry who doesn’t stick to one genre, both as a storyteller and a producer. His directorial debut was a coming-of-age film, Udaan. Then he switched gears to romance with Lootera, which happens to be one of my favorite love stories of all time. After that he locked his protagonist in a room in a high-rise apartment for Trapped. A few years later, while the superhero/vigilante genre was leaning towards CGI-heavy spectacle, Motwane took the grounded approach to talk about the water scarcity in Mumbai through Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. Simultaneously, he collaborated with Anurag Kashyap and set the bar for made-for-ott crime dramas with Sacred Games. He followed that up with an all-out action film, which doubled as a meta commentary on the parasocial relationship between stars and fans, titled Ak vs Ak. In 2023, he released Jubilee,...

Chicago Fire has undergone lots of changes in the past year. We've seen characters come and go, we've seen established relationships get challenged, and we've seen those struggle to acclimate to these changes.
2024 has seen the second half of Chicago Fire season 12 and the first half of season 13, and as such, we thought it would be a good idea to cherry pick the moments we thought stood out most... for the right reasons that is.

As fall turns into winter, and a chill enters the air, horror fans begin to feast on their favorite holiday horrors. Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are all seasonal staples, and more contemporary offerings, such as Krampus and Better Watch Out, have become new classics. Yet for additional helpings of festive frights, perhaps the following double-feature could be considered; both The Dorm That Dripped Blood and Trapped Alive even hail from the decade where Christmas Horror, as a subgenre, began to take shape and resemble its more modern form.
The Dorm That Dripped Blood also goes by Pranks, The Third Night, and Death Dorm. The later title is what appears on the source print for Synapse Films’ uncut restoration, however, the longer name is what sticks best, even for those who have never seen this 1982 obscurity. While manhwa are usually associated with action-packed power fantasies like Solo Leveling and Omniscient reader, the medium has plenty more to offer, with villainess manhwa being one of the most underrated genres. The villainess trope has quickly skyrocketed in popularity since its inception, almost becoming synonymous with the otome isekai genre, and it isn't hard to see why.
Antagonists are often considered to be the most compelling characters in a story, regardless of the medium in which they appear. As such, centering a story around the antagonist instead of the typical lead offers a nice change of pace while opening up new avenues of storytelling. This trend has taken root in the form of the "trashy Mc trope" in shonen manhwa, and the "villainess trope" in the case of shojo manhwa, and though such stories are a dime a dozen, a handful of villainess manhwa do stand out for their subversive stories and exceptional writing.

Celebrated actor Manisha Koirala and filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane discussed the evolving landscape between theatrical and streaming platforms during a session at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, where Koirala also revealed plans to write a comedy book about 1990s and 2000s actresses adapting to Gen Z culture.
“For me as an actor, be it for the big screen or web series, it’s the same amount of work that is needed, sincerity needed. The preparation, mind frame, everything is the same,” said Koirala, who recently starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s hit Netflix series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”
Motwane, who directed Prime Video’s “Jubilee” and Netflix’s “Sacred Games,” noted that streaming offers more creative flexibility. “The wonderful part of streaming is that you’re not stuck to saying with theatrical that okay, you have to make a movie two to two and a half hours.

Anyone familiar with R&b icon Luther Vandross would be just as surprised, as his music remains prevalent two decades after his death, yet his personal life is forever shrouded by unanswered questions about his personal life. “He’s the most famous singer a lot of people don’t know,” said the director to IndieWire ahead of a screening of her new film “Luther: Never Too Much” at the Virginia Film Festival 2024 where it won the Audience Award for Documentary.
Though Porter had not come into said Sony meeting with an idea of who she specifically wanted to make a film about, the director of acclaimed projects like “Trapped,” “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” and “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court” — which all...

It appears that Charlize Theron is not ready to settle down with someone unless it’s Guillermo from Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Apart from the comedic skit she pulled off earlier this year, she has only mentioned being married in one another instance in her life. She and her then-boyfriend Stuart Townsend used to call each other husband and wife in the late 2000s when their relationship was at its peak.

The two actors met each other on sets of Trapped and beat all the odds to stay in a long relationship for ten years. However, the couple’s busy film schedule caught up to them and they eventually parted ways. The relationship devastated her, making her reconsider her stance on settling down.

Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.
Especially around Halloween.
USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.
See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.
Trapped (1989)

Directed by Fred Walton, Trapped was one of USA’s first World Premiere Movies. Here Kathleen Quinlan starred in what feels like a blueprint for P2.

Maia Mitchell was born and raised in Australia, though some fans might not realize it, since so many of her most popular projects have been produced in America and have her donning a different accent. Her big break was through Australian television in shows aimed at kids and families, and that trend allowed her to break through to a worldwide audience on the Disney Channel.
Mitchell has spent a lot of her professional acting career in the United States, but in 2022 she returned to Australia when the nation was experiencing a flooding crisis. Since then, shes been an advocate for combating climate change, something she speaks on in between acting jobs. On the way, shes got a few thrillers and horror projects, including the adaptation of the video game Until Dawn, but these projects are her best so far.

Trapped in a Soap Opera is the latest hit manhwa to get officially localized on Webtoon for English-language readers, and as expected, it channels K-drama appeal into a gorgeously drawn webcomic. The story follows Jia Han, craving an easy life, as she indulges her passion for cheesy Korean soap operas, a problem relatable for any reader. However, the premise of being suddenly sucked into a K-drama is certainly more outlandish, putting a modern spin on the popular otome isekai craze sweeping manhwa readers in Trapped in a Soap Opera.
The first seven free chapters of Trapped in a Soap Opera dropped on Webtoon on September 3, 2024, with new chapters every Wednesday. The story is written by Apricot.K and drawn by Ganno. It boasts radiant colors, remarkable depth, detailed backgrounds, and gorgeous characters vying for the spotlight while having strongly varied traits and backstories. An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.
Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.
That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.
With three films in the top 10 (#8 is “Inside Out” from Pixar with its $642 million to date) and the distributor represents nearly 54 percent of the weekend’s gross. Its return to dominance...

Buenos Aires – Mafalda, the beloved and wily six-year-old drawn into acclaim by celebrated Argentine artist Quino, will bring her socially-conscious hijinks to the screen. News of the adaptation, which will be ushered in by Oscar-winner Juan José Campanella, was announced Monday evening as Netflix unveiled their 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ slate to a spirited crowd of industry and media professionals.
Campanella will direct, produce and showrun the project, while Gastón Gorali co-pens and acts as general producer of the Netflix Original series and Sergio Fernández boards as production director. Netflix and Campanella and Gorali’s Mundoloco CGI, the studio behind “Metegol,” the largest Latin American animated production to date, produce.
“Mafalda and her friends not only made me laugh a lot, but from time to time, they sent me to the dictionary. And each new word I learned came with the reward of a new laugh,” Campanella revealed in a July statement.

Internationally celebrated Icelandic actors Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hera Hilmar are set to star in “Reykjavik Fusion,” an Iceland-set crime thriller series that is rapidly racking up pre-sales in multiple territories.
The series’ deals underscore an increasingly attractive financing model, at least for selectively produced foreign-language shows, based on tying down partners and pre-sales among local broadcasters in Europe rather than waiting for a U.S. deal with a streamer for the U.S.
“It’s a dynamic ecosystem in Europe right now, full of potential partners,” said Erik Barmack, whose Wild Sheep Content co-produces and handles the international distribution of “Reykjavik Fusion.”
A familiar hirsute face and huge body for international audiences, Ólafur Darri is known for “The Tourist,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “True Detective.” He has also played the lead in Icelandic export hits “Trapped” and “The Minister.”

Icelandic actor/director Baltasar Kormákur is a member of a growing cadre of international filmmakers who make films at home as well as Hollywood. Kormákur is best known for studio action adventures such as “Contraband” (2012), his remake of his 2000 breakout “101 Reykjavik.” Producer/star Mark Wahlberg took a shine to the rugged director, and went on to make another film with him, the $80-million actioner “2 Guns” (2013), co-starring Denzel Washington.
Accustomed to weathering harsh conditions while directing such films as the International Oscar-shortlisted survival film “The Deep” (2013), Kormákur used many tricks in his filmmaking arsenal for Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Everest” (2015), blending a subzero soundstage with vertiginous ladders, real snow, location footage in the Dolomites, and CGI extensions.
But like many Hollywood imports, he returned to his own country to start a production company and live a double life. He makes some projects in Hollywood (2022’s “Beast” starring Idris Elba), and...

Mother, Couch is an absurdist dramedy that asks more questions than it answers. You have to be curious and adventurous for this film, unlike most viewers. The film evokes the theater of the absurd and is unique enough to appeal to arthouse cinephiles. Strong lead performances from a stacked cast ultimately don't amount to much as the story takes a fever dream turn, leaving some audiences bewildered.
Three estranged half-siblings face a family crisis when their horrible mother refuses to leave a bankrupt furniture store. Mother, Couch sports an all-star cast in a surrealist dramedy that leaves many questions purposely unanswered. Strong lead performances by Ewan McGregor and a venomous Ellen Burstyn don't amount to much in the end. The film evokes the theater of the absurd, with a head-scratching response when the narrative goes bonkers. What begins as relatively straightforward takes a fever dream turn that pushes weird off a cliff.

Charlize Theron was considered for A24's Friday the 13th series as Pamela Voorhees, but the project was put on hold. Bryan Fuller was dismissed from the project due to behind-the-scenes complications, causing the development to halt. A24 is still committed to making the show, but it's uncertain if the original Fuller scripts will be used.
A24's curbed Friday the 13th series would have given us Charlize Theron as the mother of Jason Voorhees. Development on the highly anticipated prequel series titled Crystal Lake was reportedly stopped in May 2024, which is a major loss for fans of classic Jason Voorhees films and the horror genre at large. Although the original Friday the 13th movie from 1980 essentially acts as the prequel to the franchise, I'm sold on just about anything that involves A24 and horror, so having the project come to an indefinite halt is certainly not inspiring to hear.

Baltasar Kormákur is back directing — but this time it’s not a survival drama, it’s a romance.

There have already been several high points on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour, and Sunday night’s show in Columbus, Ohio, provided another one.
The Boss and co. turned in an epic three-hour, 30-song set that saw “Youngstown,” “Streets of Fire,” and “I’m Goin’ Down” all performed live for the first time since at least 2017. The choice to kick off the show with “Youngstown” was especially appropriate as it was written about Youngstown, Ohio, located just two-and-half hours away from Columbus. Meanwhile, “Streets of Fire” has only been performed by Springsteen 23 times since 1978, and not since 2017.

MipDoc keynote speaker Dawn Porter is coming to Cannes to discuss not only the challenging doc marketplace, but also how to work and prosper within it.
In the last few years the doc industry has favored a handful of big-name filmmakers, like Porter, who are commissioned to make one-off films or docuseries. Over the last 12 months two of Porter’s docus were released: “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court” which was financed and distributed by Showtime and “The Lady Bird Diaries,” which was financed and distributed by Hulu/ABC News.
But budgets for commissioned projects, even those with well-known documentarians attached, have diminished significantly since the pandemic, due in part to corporate consolidation. The shrinking number of nonfiction distributors has hit directors of independently made docs especially hard. The major streaming services, who were spending millions to acquire indie fare five years ago, lost interest in garnering titles out of festivals.

If you needed any proof that Bruce Springsteen is fully recovered from health ailments that derailed his 2023 tour (some of which may or may not have been the result of Larry David), look no further than the performance he and the E Street Band turned in at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Thursday night.
The show ran a grand total of three hours and 18 minutes and featured a sprawling 32-song setlist including several tracks that hadn’t been played live in close to a decade. What’s more, Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, made her first appearance on the 2024 leg of the tour, joining her husband for performances of “Tougher Than the Rest” and “Fire.”

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen’s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

Sara Ali Khan will be seen shortly in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video presentation, ‘Ae Watan Mere Watan’, which is based on the life of the young Gandhian, Usha Mehta, and her Congress Radio, which became the voice of the 1942 Quit India Movement.
Mehta was an ordinary young woman with extraordinary resilience, but she may never have been known, had her voice not benefited from the amplification provided by equipment supplied by Nanik Motwane.
He was the Bombay industrialist who ensured, literally, that Mahatma Gandhi got heard by the masses by providing the Congress with mics for its sessions and rallies. In fact, Motwane’s Chicago Radio branding appears on mics in all pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress leaders photographed during some of the iconic moments of the freedom struggle.

As we’ve said over the past few years, the films being produced by the students at the London Film School are always an apt barometer for the standard of budding filmmakers based across the UK and Europe. The school offers its cohort industry-leading tuition alongside professional equipment to make great work but both those elements are nothing if you don’t have a strong idea and a talented filmmaker to utilise them. Fortunately, as demonstrated in this year’s graduate showcase, the crop of promising talent and fresh ideas are in abundance. It’s been incredibly tricky to narrow down the shorts this year into a tight list of ten as the standard across the board was so high so if you’re able to get across to the BFI Southbank this week (22nd – 26th January 2024) to catch the programme in its entirety, you won’t regret it. However,...

Trapped is a hidden gem on Netflix, with a complicated story and an action-packed ending that has propelled its popularity on the streaming platform. Joe's motivation for kidnapping Abby in Trapped was driven by his grief over his own daughter's death and a desire to make his family whole again. Cheryl agreed to help Will in Trapped because she was forced to comply with the kidnapping plans and became increasingly aware of Joe's dangerous behavior. She ultimately empathized with Will's concerns for Abby's safety.
The 2002 movie Trapped ended with a huge final confrontation on a highway, complete with a multi-car pileup, an impromptu plane landing, and a logging truck crash. The thriller currently streaming on Netflix features a steady buildup to its climactic ending. The film follows Joe Hickey (Kevin Bacon) and his crew as they attempt to kidnap Karen Jennings' (Charlize Theron) daughter Abby (Dakota Fanning) in search of $250,000 in ransom money.
