Another massive Mulaney fan here. He is a top-tier, brilliant stand-up comedian, perfectly suited for SNL-both as a writer and performer. He's also a decent voice actor and an excellent talk show guest. I have a few theories (more like psychological observations) on why he excels in these areas but struggles as a talk show host or with his own sketch comedy show. However, what matters most is his mental well-being, which I believe is closely tied to the feedback he receives. There's nothing wrong with experimenting, trying new things, and striving to be great at all of them-but I never want to see him return to his old lifestyle out of desperation or a sense of failure, especially when he's already one of the best at what he does best.
This show is truly unique. Mulaney is able to create an interpersonal dynamic with 5 people that can go any direction. It's organized chaos. The random pre-planned bits sprinkled throughout along with the prerecorded spots give the show a Monty python feel. I've also enjoyed the roster of musical guests. To match the eclectic vibe of the show, the musical acts come from different eras and genres and the performances are solid and well choreographed. Another cool element is the inclusion of callers as the show is broadcast live on Netflix. These calls are an absolute wild card, with people in various states of sobriety voicing their experiences relative to the show's subject for the episode. As a fan of exploratory musical acts like Phish, this show hits home for me.
As John said, "Jazz talk show." Very loose and freewheeling. I'm loving it. Loved the earlier six show run last year.
If it was nightly, wouldn't be as alluring, but one night a week. Sure. Tune in and hang for the ride.
People like me who find the endless array of celeb interviews very formulaic and ho hum-ish, may very well like this talk show with a twist. Kinda quirky but not as juvenile as Reggie Watts' brand of quirk or Fallon's wagging puppy dog drivel. Keep on mixing it up, Mulling Man.
I'm sure you'll find you line and length, as they say in cricket and your demographic will find yew.

I am a big fan of John Mulaney and couldn't wait to watch the first episode last night.
Once the show started, my excitement never went up. I hope they got honest reviews from their test audience because this show wasn't funny nor was it entertaining.
Even with quality guests, Michael Keaton, Joan Baez, Fred Armisen the show never picked up the pace.
The monologue bombed, the phone segment was terrible, and even Michael Keaton, Fred Armisen and cameo guest Tracy Morgan couldn't generate even a single laugh. I was bored after the phone call segment and lost interest after that. I don't know who was responsible for writing or producing his but they need to be replaced. It is a boring concept and needs to be different than the other talk shows as John Mulaney's brand of humor doesn't seem to fit with the format, clearly doesn't relate to the guests, or even resonate with the viewers.
If I was a producer I wouldn't have added my name to the credits because I would be embarrassed if I had anything to do with the show. If they don't revamp this show it won't make it past one season, even on Netflix. They did green light Meghan Markle's show so there is a chance it may be renewed, but if it bombs like this again it will be cancelled for sure.
I'll still give it another chance but if they have another episode as bad as the first one, I won't watch it again.

This is a retitling of "Everybody's In LA".. unfortunately the title wasn't the issue with the show.
The issue is the format + Mulaney. He's not funny, not personable, not quick witted.. clearly unsuitable as a talk show host. Every single episode makes it clear how MUCH better at "comedy" Richard Kind is in comparison. Honestly, Richard Kind hosting and Mulaney as the sidekick, would be better.
Mulaney is flat, relatively unentertaining, and comes across as so, so "thirsty".
Sure, some of the guests may be interesting, but due to how "deadpan" and boring Mulaney is.. the guests are not really utilized. I mean, in the first episode of this show Michael Keaton is basically a couch warmer.
Any entertainment value is like watching NASCAR.. merely waiting for a wreck... or something unexpected. The call-in aspect is horrific.
Netflix is burning money with this series. They'd be wise to just cut their losses and kill it..
