Thunderbolts* promises climactic events that will cause a shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it concludes Phase Five. While the film's previews suggest the eponymous group won't be playing around in their quest for redemption, director Jake Schreier admits the superhero blockbuster took inspiration from an unlikely source in the iconic Pixar film, Toy Story 3.
Speaking with Empire, Schreier revealed how much Toy Story 3 inspired some of the sequences in Thunderbolts*. According to the music video director-turned-filmmaker, the character dynamics in Thunderbolts* mirror those of the key players in Toy Story 3, given that the group of antiheroes is thrown together for an important cause.
“I had Toy Story 3 in there,” Schreier said. “It wasn’t as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters. They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together. And the characters of Thunderbolts*, like those in Toy Story 3,...

Here's an interesting premise for a survival film: getting swallowed by a whale and fighting to escape alive. That's what the upcoming movie Whalefall is about, based on the 2023 novel of the same name by Daniel Kraus, an author who has collaborated with Guillermo del Toro and George A. Romero.
Deadline reports that the lead role in Whalefall has gone to actor Austin Abrams. Abrams has previously starred in teen-centric projects like Do Revenge, Euphoria, Dash & Lily, and Paper Towns, but he's been branching out and becoming increasingly popular in recent years. In 2024, Abrams starred in Wolfs, an action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. He will also star in the upcoming horror film Weapons from Barbarian director Zach Cregger. Abrams landed the part in Whalefall after an extensive auditioning process.
The outlet reports that Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) will direct the film and co-write the script with Kraus.

Thar she blows! Spontaneous and No One Will Save You director Brian Duffield is dropping anchor on Whalefall, a unique undersea thriller with Wolfs actor Austin Abrams in the lead role. After scouring the depths of the audition pool for the right actor to dive into the tale, Abrams emerged as the top choice to topline the film based on the Daniel Krauss novel. The ambitious project lands with 20th Century, with Duffield co-writing the script alongside Krauss.
Deadline describes Whalefall as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The scientifically-accurate story focuses on a scuba diver searching for his deceased father’s remains, only to get swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale with only one hour to escape before oxygen runs out. While struggling to survive, the young diver discovers a new reason to live in the most unlikely place.
Here’s a synopsis for Krauss’s novel courtesy of Amazon:...

The Thunderbolts* is assembling characters from franchises like Black Widow, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and The Wasp for what promises to be one of the McU's wildest team-ups to date.
While Reservoir Dogs, Ronin, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol were among filmmaker Jake Schreier's key sources of inspiration, so was...Toy Story 3?!
"I had Toy Story 3 in there," the director told Empire Online. "It wasn’t as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters. They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together."
"That [furnace] sequence works so well because you’ve come to care about these characters so much," Schreier added. "Can they get out of the trash can together?"
While we'd have never imagined a movie like Thunderbolts* being inspired by Pixar's animated classic, the members of the team also share something in common: they're damaged people.

As DC Studios kicks off its rebooted on-screen universe and Marvel focuses more on quality over quantity, there are probably less superhero films on the way than you’d expect. At least, specifically in 2025.
In total, there are only four new ones on the way for the year, three of which are coming from Marvel. That’s largely the result of schedule shakeups and a bigger focus on TV series.
A sequel to Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” was originally set for October 2025, but it got pushed to 2027 in December. Otherwise, both studios have several TV series on the way, with DC debuting “Creature Commandos” — the first project in Gunn’s universe — back on Dec. 5.
Here are all of the superhero films set to be released between Marvel and DC in 2025.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew seems to have escaped the notorious curse that has plagued the franchise, causing shows like The Acolyte to tank right out of the gate. Skeleton Crew has received a lot of praise for its story, which has seemingly taken the franchise out of the ditch that it is in.

The last episode of the show, and the best-rated yet, titled You Have A Lot to Learn About Pirates, bodes well for another Disney property. While Star Wars seems to be steadily healing behind the scenes, there is another brand under Disney that needs some oomph injected back into its box office numbers and critical acclaim.

Thunderbolts* brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Five to a pulsating climax as the film teases an uncertain fate for the eponymous group. While many assumptions continue to float around regarding the movie's characters and premise, director Jake Schreier confirms one of its major aspects, its focal point.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Schreier revealed that Thunderbolts* centers around Florence Pugh's character, Yelena Belova, which shouldn't surprise many considering what transpired in the film's latest trailer. According to Schreier, Yelena is in a "certain place" when Thunderbolts* begins, with the film exploring her coming out of that place and examining her trust issues.

The cat is out of the bag, even though it was hardly in the bag at this point anyway. What cat, precisely? Well, Marvel is putting together a team of bad guys trying to do some good with next year's "Thunderbolts*," the film that will officially conclude Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We're going to see a lot of familiar faces in the movie, including Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, MCU newcomer Lewis Pullman is joining the fun as a character who's simply been referred to as "Bob" in the film's marketing thus far. However, it turns out Bob is actually someone pretty important ... as many Marvel fans were already well aware.

Ahead of the film's streaming debut this Friday, Apple TV+ has released the final trailer for Wolfs, their upcoming action comedy from Spider-Man: No Way Home directory Jon Watts, which stars Academy Award-winners George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the lead roles as a pair of fixers that are forced to work together on a mundane evening that somehow turns into the wildest night of their careers.
As per the synopsis, "Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected."
The film premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival earlier this month and received a limited theatrical release last weekend. It's currently boasting a 73% approval rating on review aggregator RottenTomatoes and a 63% on the Popcornmeter.

Film and literature are closely related, and in 2024 alone, viewers have already been graced with successful film adaptations of Dune, It Ends With Us, and The Idea of You. That said, even faithful adaptations probably shouldn't always try to replicate their source material in a new medium. This is especially true when novels include scenes that are too controversial to place on the screen.
While sometimes fans are frustrated by everything that's left out of film adaptations, some scenes probably don't belong on the screen. From The Road's darkest elements to an infamous scene in Stephen King's It, there are certain scenes from books that will probably never be translated into film.

Marvel’s newest super-team, the Thunderbolts, made their San Diego Comic-Con debut on Saturday via first-look footage — and a relatively tight-lipped cast — during the MCU panel.
The entire cast joined the Hall H stage with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, including David Harbour in costume as Red Guardian. But his colleagues didn’t get the memo. “Oh my god, you guys didn’t dress up?,” Harbour exclaimed. “Guys! Guys! I sent that email! We all said we were going to dress up because it was Comic-Con!” Harbour quickly left to change.
While info about the movie was kept to a minimum, some select nuggets included:
*Feige’s revelation that the group’s moniker isn’t related to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, saying that sometimes comic book writers just use the same names.
*Of her character, Julia Louis-Dreyfus said, “Valentina is after power, control and, I would say, just generally she wants...

Well, it’s the entertainment industry where interactions often become an instant viral sensation. For example, last year, we witnessed a moment of miscommunication that actually sent ripples through social media. Amber Heard’s friend, supermodel Cara Delevingne, found herself amidst a storm of controversy for what many saw as a rude reply to Formula One legend Martin Brundle during a pre-race grid walk.
Cara Delevingne in Paper Towns | 20th Century Fox
However, could it be that Delevingne was unfairly judged? Brundle, known for his candid grid interviews, approached the London-born model for a “quick chat”. Although she politely excused herself, citing her inability to “hear anything”, the internet backlash was swift and severe.
But was this really a snub, or simply a misunderstanding amplified by the roar of the Grand Prix atmosphere?

The movie is based on the popular young adult novel by John Green and stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus, two teens who meet in a cancer support group. They fall in love, showing each other the joys of life while they face the reality that they might not have much of it left.

Isabela Merceds New Movie Is A Reminder To Watch Her Previous John Green Adaptation From 5 Years Ago
Isabela Merced shines in Turtles All the Way Down, her second John Green adaptation after Let It Snow. Both Turtles All the Way Down and Let It Snow received high critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences alike. Turtles All the Way Down is the most well-received John Green adaptation, while Paper Towns remains the weakest.
While Isabela Merced's powerful performance in Turtles All the Way Down elevates the film, the movie also isn't the first time she's starred in a John Green book-to-screen adaptation. Penned by Green, the bestselling Turtles All the Way Down centers on Merced's Aza Holmes, a teenager living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd). More often than not, Aza obsesses over the idea of the human microbiome and other unseen organisms, which leads to intrusive thoughts about C. diff and other life-threatening diagnoses. However, managing her Ocd becomes complicated when Aza reunites with former pal...

I definitely was in childhood, so it was a treat to return. I grew up going to Stamford Bridge with my uncle. Gianfranco Zola was my favourite player.

Turtles All the Way Down earns the highest critical score for any John Green adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the movie for its authentic Ocd portrayal, a delightful coming-of-age story, and a standout performance by Isabela Merced. Some critics noted tonal imbalance with the love story and mystery.

John Green's work captures the essence of teenage struggles while exploring themes of mental health and self-discovery. Turtles All The Way Down, adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel, is finally coming to UK TV screens this month.
John Green’s book The Fault In Our Stars and its film adaptation was a huge teen phenomenon and, in all honesty, it broke my heart too at the ripe age of 23. Green’s other books, Paper Towns and Looking For Alaska have also since been adapted for screens big and small.
The latest adaptation is Turtles All The Way Down, which has just premiered on Max in the US. So far, there hasn’t been a UK release date for the film, but we’ve just received some good news in our inbox. The film, directed by Hannah Marks, will be released on Sky Cinema on the 26th May.

“Turtles All the Way Down” was always going to be a tricky movie to get right. Based on a popular, well-reviewed 2017 book of the same name by YA maestro John Green, the story follows Aza (Isabela Merced) a girl with sometimes-crippling Ocd — in addition to regular Being a Teen problems. It’s a beautiful story, but not one that necessarily screams blockbuster.
Green himself — who oversaw adaptions of his work like “Paper Towns” and “Looking for Alaska” and serves as an EP on “Turtles” — was hesitant about selling the rights to adapt it, he recalled to IndieWire.
“It was hard for me to imagine that a good movie could be made from the book,” Green said. “Also, Hollywood has a long history of depicting Ocd terribly. But because the producers were people I had such confidence in, I felt like we could at least give it a shot.”
Also helping his confidence?...

Here's a lesson for the kids out there: speak your dreams into existence and maybe, just maybe, they'll actually come true. Tragically, those who follow the comedy scene closely know that it's littered with high-profile examples of beloved talent who ended up burning out and leaving us far too soon. This one, however, might end up circling back to the best of silver linings.
Today's news has to do with Chris Farley, the late, great "Saturday Night Live" actor and comedian who passed away at the age of 33 back in 1997. He may not be as well-known a quantity among younger generations, but their older siblings and parents can certainly fill them in on the prolific, scene-stealing theatrics of the man who rose to prominence through "SNL" and subsequently made audiences cry with laughter in movies such as "Wayne's World" and its sequel, "Coneheads," "Airheads," and even an uncredited role in Adam Sandler's "Billy Madison.

Florence Pugh is back in Marvel movie mode and shared to Instagram a first look set video from the Atlanta studio where “Thunderbolts” is now in production. The tentpole will mark Pugh’s latest appearance as the assassin Yelena Belova, a role she debuted as in “Black Widow” and reprised on the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” The set video includes a first look at one of Yelena’s combat-ready suits in the film. Once again, Marvel's long-awaited "Thunderbolts" movie has been given a new release date. The good news for those looking forward to this one is that, for once, Disney has moved the film up by a couple of months rather than delay it again. Whether or not this date is the one that sticks remains to be seen, but mark your calendars for May 2, 2025, and plan accordingly.
Marvel Studios did a little bit of shuffling around with its release calendar, with "The Fantastic Four" taking over the July 25, 2025, release date that was previously held by "Thunderbolts." In announcing the new dates, Marvel also finally confirmed the cast for "Fantastic Four," with Pedro Pascal playing Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby playing Sue Storm, Ebon Moss Bachrach playing Ben Grimm, and Joseph Quinn playing Johnny Storm. Most of those names have been circling the rumor mill for some time, but have finally been made official.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seemingly found its new Sentry. Though it hasn't been officially confirmed by the folks at Marvel Studios, it has been reported widely that the character will appear in the upcoming "Thunderbolts" movie that is set to conclude Phase 5 of the MCU. Recently, Steven Yeun announced his departure from the film, which left the production with a pretty big problem to solve.
According to Deadline, Lewis Pullman is the man who has been tasked with solving that problem. Steven Yeun is out as Sentry in Thunderbolts, but the role could still end up getting played by an actor from The Walking Dead.
Previously, Yeun was set to play Sentry in the film before confirming that he has since had to drop out. Casting is underway for a replacement actor to play the role, and it was reported by both film scooper Daniel Richtman and the r/DCUleaks subreddit that Austin Abrams has been offered the part. The rumor has not been verified at this time, so no casting deals have been formally announced, and it's best to take the report with a grain of salt for now.

George Clooney will reunite with Brad Pitt in Wolfs. Clooney expresses admiration for director Jon Watts and calls the project a "really good movie." And the screening impressed its audience. In addition to Clooney and Pitt, Amy Ryan and Austin Abrams will co-star in the upcoming movie; Clooney and Pitt starred together in the Ocean's films.

Steven Yeun is speaking out about his departure from Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.”
While celebrating the opening of the Louis Vuitton pop-up in West Hollywood on Wednesday night, Yeun spoke to Variety‘s Marc Malkin about his “Thunderbolts” exit, citing last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike as one reason behind his decision to drop out of the upcoming antihero film.
“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” Yeun explained. “But Jake [Schreier], I know, is going to do an incredible job.”
“I wanna do a Marvel movie,” he added.
Yeun’s involvement in “Thunderbolts” was first reported back in February, though Marvel never officially confirmed his casting. “Paper Towns” director Jake Schreier is helming the film, with “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin penning the script from a first draft by “Black Widow” screenwriter Eric Pearson.

It was first reported in February of 2023 that "Nope," "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yeun was finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in what was described as a "significant mystery role" in "Thunderbolts." Months later it was confirmed that Yeun was going to play Robert Reynolds/The Sentry, a complicated super-figure who gains his powers from the sun and waffles between hero and villain status. The Sentry was the latest antihero figure to join the MCU, and with Yeun's star getting hotter after the explosive success of the Netflix series "Beef," his turn in Marvel's sandbox was one of the most anticipated roles of Phase Six. Unfortunately, at the start of 2024, mumblings started circulating that Yeun was exiting the project. And as was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on January 2, the rumors are true.
Important to note that while Yeun's involvement was never outright confirmed by Marvel, it was never denied,...

Marvel never officially confirmed Yeun’s casting, which was first reported back in February, and it’s unclear whether the undisclosed role is being rethought or will simply be recast.
Based on the Marvel comics about a band of antiheroes, “Thunderbolts” is set to bring together the worlds of “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Black Widow” and the upcoming “Captain America” installment “New World Order.” Plot details have been kept under wraps.
The film paused production in May due to the WGA strike, and has yet to begin filming following the end of last year’s dual writers and actors strikes.

Up-and-coming talent was absolutely brimming during the first season of Prime Video’s Gen V. The Boys’ spin-off featured an entirely new set of characters (save for some cameos), with the main cast playing college-aged students at the superhero academy known as Godolkin University. With combined past credits including Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Paper Towns, Supernatural, and more under their belts, the call sheet was stacked with familiar faces perfectly tuned into their craft. With so many terrific scene partners to choose from, Gen V star Lizze Broadway says that one, in particular, stood out. During an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff for an installation of Nemiroff’s Ladies Night series, Broadway opened up about which co-star challenged her the most.
