The Spud Hut and its owner Jerry Spruce were created as a one-off joke by Chanse McCrary in a Smosh Games video titled "Court Is In Session - Board AF: All Rise" which was released on January 28, 2024. The joke was popular with fans and was thus brought back by McCrary in Smosh's Try Not to Laugh (2016).

The first mockumentary sitcom version of the Spud Hut was trialed in a members-only video released on August 2, 2024, before being developed into a full series by Erin Dougal and Emily Parker in March 2025, filling in every other week when a new Bit City (2024) episode is not being released.
