    Entertainment, not truth

Guard your minds and avoid this show. Or, watch it while keeping your mind open to the recognition that just because someone with scholarly credentials says something is true, it doesn't mean that it really is true. I have scholarly credentials myself, so I am not criticizing such people as a whole.

These shows are derived from nothing more than opinions, based on only handpicked pieces of information selected from full range of information that's available. On the infrequent occasions when scripture is mentioned, it is twisted.

This reviewer says it better than I can: http://wideawakechristian.blogspot.com/2014/03/h2s-bible-rules-is- fail-of-biblical.html (Doug Evans from Asleep No More)

Basically, this show is setting out to dispute what Christians believe about the bible's contents, narratives, and principles. The "reasons" for specific rules are distorted in this show and bereft of any relationship to following and loving God. It's slanted to make the Christian faith seem very negative. For example, read this segment of the review from the link given above:

"The show then goes on to recite the most common atheist lie about the bible, that God demanded child sacrifice of Abraham and then changed His mind. Not once is the truth mentioned that this is a test of Abraham's faith rather than outright child sacrifice. Remarks by Brian McLaren and Rev. Dr. Jacqi Lewis make it sound like this is God changing his mind to indicate that child sacrifice has come to an end but Leviticus 18:21 comes well after this, if child sacrifice is over why would God repeat Himself in Leviticus? I pray that the editors of this show made it sound that way, that they chopped out the remarks of McLaren and Lewis and Rev. Bill Golderer (who ordained the first gay Presbyterian pastor) that affirm what every Sunday school student knows, or at least someone that skimmed the New Testament knows - that Abraham so loved God that he would follow God's commands knowing in his faith that God would make everything come out right (Hebrews 11:17– 19).

The show finishes up the segment of child sacrifice claiming that the test of Abraham ended child sacrifice in Israel completely ignoring the truth - Ezekiel 16:21-22,27 and Psalm 106:37-41. One of the huge sins of Israel was child sacrifice, for which God's wrath was brought down on them in the form of an ocean of Babylonian warriors crashing against the walls of Jerusalem and God's people being dragged off in chains. And of course no mention is made of the millions of children sacrificed today."

Interesting look on the origins of religion.

7/10 as far as history channel entertainment goes. Basically "put it on while you do something else" material. But I was surprised by the low rating on Netflix (reserved for C level horror films) so I came up with a hypothesis and investigated further. My hypothesis was this.. "If an uneducated population is driven towards religion, then the most well though out and persuasive religion would be a significant tool to guide human behavior for the betterment of society as a whole". The "Rules" are the one's we ask of religion today.. Sex, slavery, drugs, war.. where does the god of these books stand on such issues. The program does a good job of relating the context of society at the times of these writing with the language of the Christian bible. If you hold that as your belief then relating your values to that of these ancient people becomes offensive. But that's exactly where it started. Maybe I'm biased going in but it went in the direction I was hoping it would. Just know that the reviews are scrambled based on individual reactions to the content. I found it interesting. Give it a shot if you've caught up on everything else.
