No matter what approach a film takes to showing someone struggling with their mental health, almost all have the same core message: battling your demons is never easy. This internal conflict is shown in many different ways with each portrayal impacting their audience to varying degrees, though few movies take it as literally — or as horrifically humorously — as Bobby Miller's The Cleanse. Following a hapless man desperate to change his luck, the film sees him join a suspiciously cult-like "self-help group" and begin facing the worst parts of himself in a way that no viewer could have expected. This plot is hilariously uncomfortable, with the film using humor to cope with its sadder elements in a way that many real people do today, yet is also shockingly poignant.

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

Season 4 suggests the 43 children never existed in Reginald's timeline, but is unclear and incomplete. The other 43 kids may have been wiped out by The Umbrella Academy's cleanse. Consuming marigold to fight The Cleanse raises questions about the 43 kids' fate.
The Umbrella Academy's final season left a lot to be desired, with questions left unanswered, and a lack of explanation for things like what happened to the other 43 kids with powers in the series. In 2019, the show got off to a great start when it introduced the world to a team of alternative superheroes that were unlike most of those that appear in Marvel and DC. The Umbrella Academy revolved around a group of seven kids, each with distinct gifts, who fell apart years earlier, and find their way back together to fight back the apocalypse.

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy has dropped on Netflix, and whatever you think about it, I'd like to extend congratulations to the cast and crew who poured their blood, sweat and tears into the show these past several years. If nothing else, there was nothing else quite like The Umbrella Academy on TV.
According to showrunner Steve Blackman, the show was always going to end with season 4. “When I started this thing, I sort of knew four seasons of the show,” he told the Hollywood Reporter back in 2022. “I have nothing passed that in my brain, but I’ve sort of kept to a trajectory. So, I have a really good sense of what season four would be, and it should be just as bonkers as the other seasons—what a challenge these superheroes, this family has being powerless.”

Spoilers are ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4's ending.
The opening minutes of The Umbrella Academy season 4 reveal a big Jennifer twist that ties her to The Cleanse. Dr. Jean and Dr. Gene showcase artifacts from different timelines, some of which highlight Jennifer's connection to The Cleanse. The suitcase holds evidence of The Umbrella Effect, illustrating the existence of various timelines as well as The Umbrella Academy.
The Umbrella Academy season 4, episode 1, "The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want," reveals a major twist within the first few minutes of the show's final outing, but it's subtle enough that most viewers will miss the clue on their first watch. Spoilers are ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4's ending.
Bizarre plot points that were newly introduced in The Umbrella Academy season 4, like Jennifer's squid connection, are never elaborated on. The show offers very little information or detail about massive plot elements, like the Durango or The Cleanse. With just six episodes, The Umbrella Academy season 4 condenses its many threads, leading to tons of plot holes, inconsistencies, and poorly executed or confusing moments.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 boasts perhaps the most plot holes of the show's installments. Given that the timeline-hopping series becomes its most complex just ahead of the truncated fourth and final outing, the sheer number of plot holes isn't a huge surprise, but it's still disappointing. Sparrow Ben knew Jennifer but didn't recognize in the season 4 timeline. The "Jennifer incident" affected Sparrow Ben differently and traumatized him, leading to his sketches. Reginald may have manipulated memories in the Sparrow timeline to make the Hargreeves forget traumatic events.

Note: There are spoilers for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4 below.
“The Umbrella Academy” just signed off with its fourth and final season, and the Netflix series brought it all to an end with a happy reunion — of sorts. The series ends with a singular, happier timeline created thanks to the Hargreeves siblings’ sacrifice – and it’s full of familiar faces.
After the siblings realize that the marigold giving them their powers is also what’s causing the world to end repeatedly, they agree to let The Cleanse erase them from ever existing. This results in one unified, seemingly much better timeline.
The show ends with a pan around a park where we see a number of familiar faces from the series’ run; all living much better, safer lives. Showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap it was a lot of phone calls, but he ended up getting almost everyone he wanted for the scene.

The third season of The Umbrella Academy revealed that Reginald’s planet was destroyed by a catastrophic event in which he lost his beloved wife, Abigail. When I first saw that scene, I thought some kind of epidemic had hit Reginald’s world that even took his wife’s life. But the fourth season shed more light on the mystery as we came to know the real reason behind Abigail’s death. [Spoiler Alert] Ironically, she herself had brought upon her own doom by experimenting with the mysteries of the universe, which she didn’t quite understand. Yes, Abigail’s own experiment killed her or maybe made her terminally ill. To satisfy her scientific curiosity, Abigail had developed a particle from the essence of the universe. She named it Marigold as it sparkled like one. But unknowingly, she had also created another conflicting particle called Durango. Now Durango seemed to be a...

“The Umbrella Academy” came to a close with its Season 4 finale this week, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few last threads worth explaining.
The shortened final season still jammed quite a bit into just six episodes and the finale, in particular, was fit to burst. The story followed the Hargreeves siblings facing off once and for all with The Keepers in order to stop The Cleanse from ending the universe. The Umbrella Academy ended after four seasons on Aug. 8, 2024, and fans aren't exactly happy with how things turned out for the Hargreeves siblings.
The fourth season only consisted of six episodes, compared to 10 episodes in the previous three seasons. It felt like a sprint to the ending, but then the pace slowed to a crawl before ramping up in an epic season finale.
First, we're going to go through what happened in the final episode, and then we'll share why fans aren't too happy.

So, it was Reginald Hargreeves’ obsessive pursuit of his lover’s resurrection that broke the timeline. “Strange” enough. His wife, Abigail, one hell of a scientist in her days, had synthesized two new elements called Marigold and Durango. Unbeknownst to her, the physical reaction between these two particles destroyed the world, and Reginald failed to save Abigail. That was the reason why he had released the Marigold Pollens into the world. His plan was to raise seven Marigold-powered superheroes to fight against the deadly guardians, who would ultimately sacrifice their lives to reset the universe. But obviously, things didn’t go as planned. Allison had a change of heart in season 3’s ending, and she killed Reginald before he could finish the process. As a result, the Umbrella Academy survived and walked into the new timeline. And everything was normal until they didn’t get the Marigold back in their bodies.

A year and a half ago, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. Now we know when we’re going to have a chance to see this movie, as Variety has confirmed that veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights to the film and they’re planning to give it a wide theatrical release on August 23rd.
Plot details on this thriller are being kept under wraps, and Variety notes that reviews from audience members who saw the movie at Fantastic Fest last year ” hint that the film works best with as little information as possible going in.” Apparently it has something...

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Wellmania is a series created by Benjamin Law, starring Celeste Barber. It is based on a novel by Brigid Delaney.
Wellmania is a fun Australian comedy about health based on the novel by Brigid Delaney in which health is the most important thing, but seen through the eyes of a girl who has not thought about her health once in her life and who, upon discovering this new world, is like some of us when we see a bicycle and ask ourselves: and what’s this supposed to do?
Wellmania About the Series
A nice comedy in the Australian style, starring a great Celeste Barber who is given one of those “roles of her life” and who knows how to take advantage of it with wit and style.
As for the series: it has the restrained wit of intelligent humor, very literary, the smooth pace of a novel, and well-profiled characters that,...

The Crites are back at Fantasia 2019 with the world premiere of the fifth feature in the Critters franchise, Critters Attack!, from the writer/director of the 2016 festival hit The Cleanse (Aka The Master Cleanse), Bobby Miller. One of the strangest franchises around, Critters has had a recent renaissance with a re-release on home video from Shout! Factory of the original four-film series, and the Shudder original series, Critters: A New Binge. While the series opened to a lukewarm response, I'd be willing to bet that old school creature feature fans will be much more enthusiastic about Critters Attack! Fresh out of high school, Drea is struggling to keep her spirits up after having been rejected from her school of choice...

As some of you fellow horror movie fans out there might already know, this summer an all-new Critters movie is headed our way on digital and Blu-ray starring the original film's actress Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial). And today Wallace spoke a bit about what enticed her to return to the franchise all of these years later for director Bobby Miller's Critters Attack!.
"I was so happy when they sent me the reboot of Critters. My first question was is this going to be CGI? And they said no, [they] were going to use a lot of the original design of the puppets. It's all going to be puppets. And I went, 'oh, let me read the script.' I liked the script, and I liked my part in it - she's a real ball-buster - but my first concern was if this was going to be CGI. Because in a film like that,...

Inspired by the film series from the '80s and '90s, Critters follows 20-year-old Drea (Tashiana Washington), who reluctantly takes a job babysitting for a professor of a college she hopes to attend. The first trailer for Critters Attack is here. The little deadly creatures have been away from the pop culture landscape for nearly three decades now. However, in the modern age of Hollywood, everything old is new again. As such, this particular franchise is getting revived in a big way this year as we're not only getting the recently revealed Critters: A New Binge series over on Shudder, we're also getting this brand new movie, which brings back original franchise star Dee Wallace.
It's a trailer that should delight fans of the series. It starts off with a familiar premise, as the little creatures crash land on Earth and quickly begin devouring unsuspecting humans. Dee Wallace seems to be playing a role similar to that of Jamie Lee Curtis from the most recent Halloween, waiting and preparing for these aliens to return. Based on what we see here, she's more than ready for them.

Last week the first trailer was released for a new sci-fi/horror comedy series called Critters: A New Binge, which is coming to Shudder. Now, we learning that the SyFy Channel secretly shot a new Critters movie based on director Stephen Herek’s 1986 cult film.
According to JoBlo, the project has already finished production. It was shot in South Africa and it was directed by Bobby Miller (The Cleanse). The best part of this is, the original film’s lead actress Dee Wallace is also said to star in the film! She hinted at her involvement with the film in an interview with Bionic Buzz, which you can watch below.
There are no details about the new Critters movie, and there were a bunch of production photos posted on Instagram, but many of those photos have since been removed after word got out.

The lovable little carnivorous creatures from director Stephen Herek's 1986 horror-comedy Critters have been getting a lot of love recently and I for one am not complaining. First, there is Shudder's Critters: A New Binge series coming next month, which we all know about by this point in time.
But let's not forget that SyFy is also shooting a new Critters movie, which may or may not star Dee Wallace. And speaking of the latter, today we have word that the new movie has wrapped principal photography in South Africa.
Cinematographer Hein de Vos (Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell) shared a batch of vague behind-the-scenes images from the filming of his new Critters movie that revealed February 6th was the last day of filming - and if you look closely you can see the infamous ball-o-Critters getting ready to rock and roll down an epic flight of stairs. Not only that,...

Johnny Galecki promises there will still be some laughs in his new movie “The Cleanse,” but the “Big Bang Theory” and “Roseanne” star tells TheWrap that this fantasy goes deeper into the universal human struggle to “kill your inner demons before they kill you” than his current TV sitcoms.
Written and directed by Bobby Miller, “The Cleanse” stars Galecki as Paul, a man who struggles immensely with social anxiety and decides to go on a retreat that promises to cleanse one’s inner demons.
Joined by three others, he is instructed on the retreat by their guide, Lily (Anjelica Huston), to drink a special cleansing potion when he arrives.

But after the potion triggers a sudden bout of sickness, Paul and the others discover that the retreat’s promise was quite literal, as they cough up small demons that are the embodiment of their deepest flaws as human beings.
“I don’t want to put out the misconception that it’s a slasher film,” Galecki told TheWrap. “It’s a bit of a comedy and a bit of a love story too and that’s one of the things I loved about it when I read it.”
“The Cleanse” is in theaters and available on VOD now.

“Roseanne” made waves when it returned to ABC after 21 years for diving head first into the U.S.’ current political divide. Johnny Galecki, who came back as David Healy last month, credits the revival’s embrace of politics as a reason for its success.
“It’s always been a show that was very contemporary and very honest about what families go through … what families argue about,” the actor told TheWrap while promoting his new indie movie “The Cleanse.”
The show, namely because of series star Roseanne Barr’s real-life politics, has been lauded by the conservative community for promoting their values and showcasing working-class, middle America. “I don’t know that a lot of shows are doing that,” the “Big Bang Theory” star said.

For Galecki — who joined Season 4 in 1992 — the show also has a personal connection, as he remembers watching the first episode when he was growing up in Chicago. “My parents said, ‘It’s like the writers are peering through our windows,'” he recalled, adding that the original series “governed when my family ate dinner.”
Galecki said he wasn’t surprised that the “Roseanne” revival has been successful. “I was one of the people who couldn’t wait for it to return,” he said.
While he had kept in touch with Barr, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert (who had a recurring role on “The Big Bang Theory”) over the years, Galecki said when he was on set for the revival, it was the first time he had been with the entire cast in one sitting.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
