The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

Monday's Emmy Awards earned a 4.2 demo rating and 15.6 million total viewers, according to final Nielsen numbers. It was the second-biggest audience for the Emmys in eight years, and it tied for the second-highest rating in the key 18-49 demographic in seven years. The NBC telecast, hosted by Seth Meyers, was the most-watched night on any TV network since March's Academy Awards.
Those numbers come despite the obstacles of being on a Monday evening (for the first time since 1976) and taking place in August. Last year's September telecast earned 17.8 million viewers, and also.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night in Los Angeles. And if you thought that NBC were somehow airing a repeat of last year's ceremony, you'd be forgiven: the awards were dominated by previous winners, with "Modern Family" tieing "Frasier"'s record for most victories in comedy, and "Breaking Bad" taking its third drama prize on the trot. Hotly-tipped newcomers like "True Detective," "Fargo" and "Orange Is The New Black" were virtually shut out, taking only three prizes between them ("True Detective" and "Fargo" both winning for directing, and "Fargo" took Best Miniseries), while other favorites like "Game Of Thrones" and "Mad Men" came out empty handed. Instead, "Modern Family" took three awards, including Ty Burrell for Best Supporting Actor, while "Breaking Bad" took three acting prizes, including a fourth for Bryan Cranston along...

Her show is certainly polarizing, and she has the public just as torn. But the girl has guts, and the Emmys have recognized that. (She's nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, her third straight nod.)
Girls season 3 saw Lena Dunham's Hannah Horvath go through a series of career crises – (spoilers) losing her ebook deal, fired from a job at GQ – and some personal problems with her three besties and boyfriend Adam. Though often criticized as self-centered (which she still was this season), she was also dealt a few harsh reality checks, losing her grandmother and making...

Adam Driver's performance as Adam Sackler shows that Girls isn't just about the girls.
In season 1, he was – let's face it – pretty darn weird. Season 2 gave us more of him, although in some not-so-nice situations with the girl he was dating. But as the boyfriend of Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham), he proved himself to be loyal, loving and the one constant in her somewhat messy life.
It was actually kind of hard to watch Adam pull away from Hannah this season – (spoilers) he got a job on Broadway and began spending more time focusing on work and less on her.

Veep has gotten deep.
Not unfunny deep. Otherwise the HBO series wouldn't deserve to win the Emmy for outstanding comedy series.
But season 3, which saw Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) elevated to the presidency and faced with the instant prospect of being a lame duck, was a satirical bull's-eye: All that desperate improvising to outflank Potus and rival candidates, and she might as well be at the end of eight years.
What once seemed like a funny, foul-mouthed send-up of Washington, D.C., has come to seem uncomfortably credible about polls trumping policy. If the government were a TV genre, it'd be this: a spin-com.

Kerry Washington could swap Olivia Pope's white hat for a gold Emmy on Monday night, making awards show history.
People spoke to the Scandal star about her second consecutive nomination for playing the feisty political fixer on the ABC drama.
Does it feel any different the second time around?
Maybe, I don't have as much anxiety the second time around. Sometimes when you do things for the first time, you're more anxious, because it's the first time, so I think maybe I'm not as anxious as last year, although I don't remember being very anxious last year either. The character of Selina Meyer on HBO's Veep is one of the most densely and skillfully written in all of television right now, and star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominated for outstanding actress in a comedy series, is giving a virtuoso performance in the role: petty, egomaniacal, shallow and mean.
Would you prefer Martin Sheen?
She also has a strange genius for shooting herself in the foot. Selina wearing squeaky shoes and cautiously walking down a looooooong White House corridor to make her first presidential address was a great piece of physical comedy.

It was another fantastic year for television, and the 2014 Emmy nominations mostly captured that (...more or less). But when it comes to winners, the Emmys can be a wily beast, as seen in last year's bevy of baffling wins (Jeff Daniels for Newsroom, Bobby Cannavale for Boardwalk Empire, among others). Expect the expected with the Emmys, usually -- unless they go completely off the wall. This year, I have requested the expertise of Collider's own Adam Chitwood to assist me with picks, not only because he closely follows the awards circuit year-round, he also has a much better track record than I do for picking awards winners in general. Hit the jump for our guesses about how the results will play out and why in our 2014 Emmy predictions. The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Seth Meyers, will air live on NBC Monday, August 25th at 8pm Et/5pm Pt.
