I suppose that this movie would have set with me better 30 years ago. From the viewpoint of 2025 I found it disappointing in the end. There was a lot of energy and synergy with the casting and that just fizzled.
Some scenes were not really needed. (pretty much all of the scenes with locals interacting with Elizabeth (Kyra Sedgewick)) the exception being the bartender who set the tone for future developments.
Beau Bridges as Richard seemed real if a bit out of touch and his reactions were spot on for the character.
Call me a hopeless romantic but I really wanted a whole different movie and at least 30 more minutes as Chase (Hellen Mirren) drives to the pier. Never the less there were some tender and beautiful moments it is definitely worth a look.

We all know the drill sobby story with little depth. This story felt real to me. I have seen some changes for the better, but I was teaching in the early 2000's and I bought into the whole story. (English teacher/counselor was a stretch but necessary to keep the plot moving) The young woman playing Jane was amazing. Stockard Channing was, well Stodkard Channing and RuPaul was how do I say it understated and warm. As an older adult who has at times tried out a lot of labels I found that this film captured the angst and the joy that can come from discovering yourself and finding the freedom to be.
To be honest I could have done without the last part, it seemed like a how to be a better parent add on, but it did add some closure.
