It's kind of the brit remake of norma rae. The ford plant, in the 1960s. She even stands up on a chair to tell the room of working ladies that they are going on strike. Minus the "union" sign. She has a male ally, from the old days, who shows her the ropes on standing up to the ford bigshots. But how long can the ladies hold up without pay? One has already lost a husband. Rita starts doubting her own actions, but to her surprise, she gets support from people she never expected. Very touching. It's good! Nothing too new, but probably not too many knew about this specific event. The women had stepped up during world war two, and here they are, just looking for equal pay. Directed by nigel cole. I really liked his "wedding video". Apparently cole has worked extensively with musicians. Hawkins was nominated for both jasmine and water.
There were several films about robbing banks and casinos in the 1960s. Some funny, some serious. This one is a little of both, but probably not on purpose. The gang is ripping off a mobster (cobb), but they are their own worst enemy. It's looking good, until things start going wrong for the robbers. One of their own starts going loopy. He runs around in the desert in his underwear for half the movie. And now there are so many people coming after them. The insurance, the bond company, the mobster, and maybe even some feds. We're distracted by the sexy elke sommer, who seems to be the smartest one in the bunch. Or is she? There are some plot holes here and there, but if you look the other way, it's entertaining. Costars gary lockwood, jack palance, fabrizio capucci. Some really, older, fun views of the vegas strip from the 1960s. Wow has that changed! Currently on turner classic streaming, appl, and amzn.
From warner brothers. Some huge names as leads. Flynn, dehavilland, massey, reagan. And a giant of a director ..michael curtiz! He had already been nominated for a bunch of films, but it would be a couple more years before he won for casablanca. In this tale, just before the civil war, jeb stuart and other west pointers are assigned to the very dangerous fort leavenworth, as punishment for fighting. Another man is dishonorably discharged for distributing subversive materials. It's okay! I think we've all seen so many westerns by now, that there wasn't really much new here; i know, it's a historical piece. It teeters back and forth between a serious drama and a comedy. A dra-mody. Combined with a love story. Script is good. Maybe they are trying to cover too much history at once? Picture quality is a bit iffy on the copy on roku. Apparently warner didn't renew the copyright, so now anyone can make a copy, of a copy, of a copy. Keep an eye out for alan hale, as tex. One can't make a black and white film without him!
