Honnestly? I enjoyed it, this movie doesn't take itself too seriously and the process revealing of the monster is disgusting enough to make me say « well, that's just a horrifying and a disgusting death ». I mean... poor kids!!
It's the kind of movie you watch with your friends on a horror night/Halloween with some good popcorn and comments.
I just wish there was a bit more substance on the background of the whole tradition, but it was well written enough to be clear/ did not take the audience for idiots. Quite frankly I liked the concept of « only boys » and specific rituals that have to be achieved for acquiring social status.

For a 1997 movie, it's a good comicbook adaptation. I would give it more a 6/10, but it doesn't deserve to be so low in the ratings, hence my 7/10.
The writing could've been more developed even though it comes from the comics. There's some backgrounds that could be more detailed. I.e.: Cogliostro narrates but we could know a bit more about his role and purpose. (I also understand it's been made for the fans)
The FX are surely outdated, but to this day the makeup job is excellent especially for the Clown and Spawn's characters. As for the cgi, the permanent cape is very important-it's just iconic to Spawn- but I understand it was more a budget issue than anything. Some camera shots are gorgeous and very respectful of the comicbooks' artworks. The rest of his suit was on point. Speaking of Spawn, I didn't realize that when I was younger- but I think he's way more serious in the comics... some lines of the movie are just not what this character is supposed to be (solemn/formal).
General respect of the morbid and dark mood: 9/10 i would add more gore, as it's also what it's about.
Writing: 5/10 Makeup: 8/10 Character movie dev.: 6/10 Plot: 6/10 Screenplay: 6/10
I am still waiting for the sequel/remake, I really hope it's going to be made. Spawn is amongst my favorite 90s comicbooks, he's iconic, and a lot of movies are still approved and developed for far less. Crossing my fingers!!
