That's the moment when you realize you've been used and it's crushing. As others have mentioned this is the anti-Pretty Woman film. In Anora a very young sex worker (as they unfortunately tend to be) is hired by a young wealthy Russian to be his 'girlfriend' for a week. Then he declares love and they spontaneously marry. At first it's a massive lottery win for her. This is her Cinderella story! Then of course it takes a turn when his parents intervene. The director astutely has the happy go lucky whirlwind beginning starkly contrast with the start of the end. The film still manages to keep funny and hopeful as we in the audience really, really want this to work out for this girl...when we know, right? We know, she just doesn't yet. This is a classic class struggle (if you want to invoke Marx). I think the tension that carries this film and keeps it comedic is owed to great direction and simply excellent performances by the whole cast. Mickey Madison is brilliant. I think Yuri Borisov was also a real scene stealer in particular. Any other year, in my opinion, he'd win the Oscar for Best Supporting actor. His character brings actual love into the story and he plays his role to perfection.
Of course I loved it. I've watched the original Dexter series, all seasons, I hate it admit, more than once. I watched New Blood, found it okay. Like many other fans I thought the Freudian ending was, well, lame. This prequel so far is much better in my opinion. Maybe it's the familiar characters, love that they're all back and the show isn't trailing far from what we'd expect in that regard. Right down to Deb's gutter mouth and Masuka's trade mark laugh. No I'm not revealing spoilers to say that. If you're even reading this review you've watched the trailers several times and had this date in your calendar. To me the show picked up as it went along. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes!
Really enjoyed this documentary. Showing Bogart through his relationships with his mother then his wives I think was well done. I liked hearing his own words throughout. I just honestly wish the documentary was longer! I think with an actor as influential as Bogart there is a lot more material to mine so speak. I think I can ask any adult in any generation 'who was Humphrey Bogart' and they know! Casablanca makes every list of greatest movies of all time in every decade since it was made, and in my opinion, largely due to Humphrey Bogart. He created the incredible characters that made him an icon and his films absolutely memorable. I wish we'd had a little more of that flushed out...I also didn't like that it started with his funeral. I would have rather it started with people playing tribute/talking about his influence. I think the Elvis documentary Return of the King did that very well for example. Still I do recommend this documentary and think it's definitely worth watching.
