The stories are usually interesting and would be more so if the People staff would just stay behind the cameras and not narrating awkwardly in front of them. It's really bizarre.
I loved the original documentary. In my opinion, this dramatized version doesn't compare to the original documentary - partly because I saw the doc first, but also, it's not as raw or engaging as the original doc. It feels overly produced.
What is it that draws me to this story? Of course, Gary. Gary is amazing. He's not a conformist. He lives life by his rules. This fact, combined with his ability to fly a crop duster plane, his smarts, and his fearlessness make him an enigma. He is truly fascinating to learn about. But I also think the filmmakers get some real credit on this production. The filmmakers had a vision and they laid it out beautifully. Just the way they chose to handle this production (the camera work, the back and forth in time, the music, their choice of narrators, etc.) makes the story (already good) even ten times better.
