While it might not find a home in the pantheon of great Christmas action flicks it's a totally refreshing 2hrs of 'don't make them like they used to' fun, full of action l, tension, twists and turns, with nods to Die Hard 2, Nick of Time, Sudden Death and Phone Booth. Now I must warn anyone triggered by having two 'Male Pale Stale' leads that this might not be the movie for you but it does have the 2020s favourite trope, the lone wolf female detective who's a move ahead of anyone (or so she thinks)., but it's so nice to see a studio like Dreamworks making something from the Blockbusters school of A great night in! With 2 solid performances from Taron and Jason and a really cheesy Christmas soundtrack and you've got yourself a nice night this December.
Ok so as exciting as it gets these days to have new Star Wars content I'll always be compelled to give it a chance and after the first episode if Skeleton Crew here's what I found good ... and What I found BAD.
The good:
A look to the ceiling of a spaceship in the opening scene just like the Rebel Trooper in A New Hope
The view of from above of the suburbs taking me right back to Spielberg's early 80s family movies
Raleigh Burner style padding on the Kids Speeder
One of the kids role playing Charlie Sheen in the police station scene from Ferris Buellers Day Off
The General boring normal mess of everyday life in the galaxy
The Bad
The rest of it, not an original idea or brief thought that wasn't done better in a movie like Explorers, E. T, Flight of the Navigator even, it's a poorly acted strangers things clone, it looks a bit cheap, Star Wars is mostly crowbarred in to a kids adventure movie from the 80's. Also again with Disney Star Wars, it's moving further and further from its real audience but.....
If I was a 10 year old again, all of these gripes would be irrelevant and I'd think it's the best thing I'd seen in ages. And isn't that the point really?
