Napoleon Solo visits the Berlin headquarters of U. N. C. L. E.'s Northeast division to inspect the security system in advance of Summit-Five, a meeting of U. N. C. L. E.'s five division chiefs. He's led around the building by the snobby chief enforcement agent, Strothers (Lloyd Bochner) and a communications expert named Newman (Don Chastain).
When an alarm goes off, Newman realizes the building's security has been grievously compromised. He barricades himself inside the office of the absent division chief and places an emergency call to Mr. Waverly in New York. The call is cut off; when Napoleon breaks down the office door, he discovers Newman's freshly-murdered corpse.
Obviously THRUSH mole deeply embedded in the Berlin office killed Newman. The reason: THRUSH is presumably trying to discover the location of Summit-Five to murder all of U. N. C. L. E.'s top leaders in one fell swoop.
Only three agents were in the position to kill Newman that's Helga (Susanne Cramer), Solo and Strothers - after Helga is killed, Strothers puts on the pressure to put Solo under tough questioning ... Solo and Ilya believe Strothers is the culprit, but Solo is willing to go through the questioning in order to prove he's not the mole ....
Phew! What a plot! Has plenty of twists, sufficient suspense and very arty camerawork a la 1967. Usually with comedic moments, this episode is more intense, darker and on the prod - the action was exciting, and if that isn't enough there's a solid performance by Albert Dekker who is an extrovert in a long fur coat and a matching cap.

While Maxwell Smart and the Chief are playing chess in the Regency Club, a waiter makes an assassination attempt of the chief by poisoning the chief's coffee. The manager of the club, Cedric Devonshire, stops the chief from drinking the acid-filled coffee, but not before the KAOS waiter escapes.
While Max, the Chief, and Agent 99 are discussing the best plan of action, a secret meeting is being held at KAOS headquarters. It turns out that Mr. Devonshire runs the local KAOS branch, as he is yelling at the waiter for being so careless in the assassination attempt.
He then orders his men to abduct Agent 86. They succeed and keep Max locked up in a prison cell. Here, Devonshire administers a brainwashing pill to Smart, effectively hypnotizing him. He gives Max orders to kill whoever says the word 'checkmate', which will be the Chief at their next chess game that evening.
Another sharp episode with some good comic routines, the standout being the bit where he's imprisoned and KAOS need him to escape prison in order for their plan to work. Every attempt to make Smart leave the hail fails.

A secretary (Merry Anders) is caught rifling in the filing cabinet of her employer psychiatrist Dr Myron Braam ( Torin Thatcher) and contacts Smart, informing him that he's passing information accrued from his patients to KAOS. She also informs him that she's about to drown in a booth...
Smart goes undercover as disturbed Army officer Colonel Smart to investigate psychiatrist who is suspected of passing information to KAOS.
Unfortunately for Agents 86 and 99, KAOS finds out who Max really is, and decides to eliminate both 86 and 99 in their fiendish assassination weapon - a phone booth that fills with water!
Will KAOS succeed in turning 86 and 99 into 00s?
Torin Thatcher always made a formidable heavy and he does the same here as a shrink selling information to KAOS - liked the phone booth filled with water. Surprised that Smart thinks the secretary is making the water filling the phone booth, that's it's impossible - I mean, doesn't he have a shoe phone!! Solid entry.
