It may be my age (58) and life circumstances, but I absolutely loved this movie. David Duchovny is funny and charming, and Meg Ryan is splendid, both leads were great and still prove to be worthy and fantastic. Even when the film veers off into semi-fantasy it's a pleasure to watch. For those of us who may be slightly disillusioned at where we have landed (ha-mild joke because the story takes place in an airport) in life, this film is a balm and inspiration. At the end of the day there may still be magic out there. Give the film time to settle into its groove. To be clear, this is a film for Adults. Sit back and enjoy, I certainly did.
Having read the novel several times and seeing the 1979 tv-series a number of times over the years, I was really looking forward to this. Well, it was disappointing. I realize it's a lot to ask to have to cram the book into a two-hour film, a lot of story and character background had to be sacrificed. All of our main characters are there, some visibly altered to suit 21st century norms, but not well fleshed out. A bunch of liberties are taken with the storyline as well, some for no clear reason, it seems. I guess if you have never read the book, you wouldn't know what you're missing. But the most heinous thing about this film is simple: if you're the least bit of a horror movie fan, It's Not Scary. Like, at all. Give it a watch if you like, but the broth of this soup is quite thin.
We actually just turned this movie off after about 40 minutes, which is rare for us, we usually stick with any film, no matter the quality. Doesn't resemble The Hunger Games whatsoever, and so boring. The leads are uninteresting, there seems to be barely any plot and it was way too easy to ignore that it was even on, for both of us. What a shame, because the rest of the franchise is pretty impressive. Bland to the point of wanting to go and take a nap. This is a prequel which explores Donald Sutherland's characters' beginnings, but it isn't engaging at all. The film just doesn't have that Hunger Games 'feel.' I don't need Jennifer Lawrence in it, but I do need an engaging story. Hard Pass.
