The first half of this movie is a great piece of cinematic horror and is masterfully done (very creepy and tense atmosphere), but the second half falls apart very quickly and gets ridiculous and implausible by the minute. Honestly, I don't understand the high user rating for this movie.
There is really nothing wrong with the story per se; The problem really lies in the plot and the unbelievably stupid decisions that the characters make (I remember saying to myself during the film, "Are these people really that naïve and dumb??"). Very unfortunate for this movie because it started out so incredibly strong and I was literally on the edge of my seat for the first half, but everything is wasted in the second half by poor writing and a very stupid ending. I wholeheartedly agree with another user who wrote, "did they switch writers halfway through this movie??"
This movie definitely had the potential to be an 8 or 9 out of 10, but I have to give it a 5 (very generous) because the last half and the ending was a major disappointment.

This movie was stylish and the acting was very good, but the movie's problem was that it was severely lacking in any kind of underlying tension or lead character development. Honestly, I was expecting much more out of a World War II spy movie.
Hollywood is notorious for embellishing stories and stretching the truth for dramatic effect, but this movie does the exact opposite. It truly boggles my mind how you can take a very interesting story about a really remarkable and intelligent person like Moe Berg and make it so anti-climactic and dull. I kept on waiting for something even remotely interesting to happen in this movie, but it never did.
Great movies (or even just above average ones) give the viewer some background on the characters who are central to the story. The Catcher Was a Spy gave us only tiny little snippets of the life of Moe Berg and we never truly learned what his early years of experiences were, what really made him tick, or how he came to be recruited as a spy.
I wouldn't call this movie bad, but it definitely was very flat and could've been so much better than it actually turned out to be.
