AlienRobotZombieOverlord's rating
This series had so much potential -- the premise is wonderful and really hooks you right off the bat. It's very topical as well, so you'd think there'd be a lot of material to work with. But that's where the series actually falls flat. The performances are just fine -- no one's going to win an award here, but DeNiro, Basset, and Plemons are all great actors, and no one turns in a bad performance per se. But the script itself is just woefully poor. At no time does this series really hook you as a thriller, make you feel a connection to this plot or these characters the way it should, or give you any sense of real political stakes. It just falls flat, and in the end feels like wasted potential -- and wasted time.
All I knew about this movie gong in was that it had made a few critics' top-10 lists. I think that's the best way to view it. Apparently, a few people were let down by the marketing, which seemed to pitch it one way, when it turned out to veer a different way. I don't know, I never saw a commercial or trailer for it. Apparently, some people were torn over the performance of one of the leads (the famous one). I don't know, I didn't really think about it until half-way through he film, and by then I had pretty much already just decided to roll with it. Apparently some people didn't think it lived up to the hype of "scariest movie ever." Seriously, what movie ever lives up to that kind of ridiculous hype? Don't think about such things, just watch this with no expectations. If you like thrillers, you will enjoy it.
I was not expecting much with this show. I tend to dislike animation, as I think it is really geared towards kids and doesn't do a good job with character development. However, this show has surprised me so far. Only the first two episodes have aired so far, but it's off to a great start. The animation is unique and fluid, and the story-telling has been interesting. I feel like we've gotten to know not just Spidey but also his cast of supporting characters in just this short amount of time. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is crisp -- I put it on as background noise, but found myself watching intently to see what was happening. And I'm ready for more. I can see a lot of story-telling potential already set up. It's following a lot of the classic Spider-Man beats -- and yet charting a completely original direction. As someone who's been on the Spider-Man train for over 5 decades now, I didn't think I'd be saying this, but I'm really excited to see what comes next!
