Ok I bought into many of the reviews and went to see this in the theatre. I don't know if these are paid people to post reviews or employees etc, but omg are so many of these reviews uber dramatic and hyperbolic. This is film is a tragedy with horror elements. I will always appreciate those trying to make original film and not just cashing a paycheck for derivative BS, but this movie is average or above average. The pacing isn't fast but it never drags. The acting is probably the true highlight. There are some gory, squirm in your seat scenes, but there's no way to call this movie "scary." And I'm not sure that's what it tried to be- rather many viewers seem bent on labeling this as just a crazy, scary, insane ride. It is not. It does, however, make a strong and emotional statement about loss, grief, and the power of family. My rating compared to most on this site these days will be seen as hating on the film. This isn't the case- I hate rating inflation. This film is worth a watch but you'll be frustrated if you expect the movie that is falsely presented in most of these reviews.
Good not great in my opinion. Requiem for a Dream meets The Fly as Nicholas Winding Refn stops by. The theme is as old as humanity but stands out now in our age of selfies, social media, unregulated supplements and GLP drugs. The acting was great. As the movie progresses I feel the genre bending begins. It felt like a movie with 3 acts and while each one had plusses, some other theatre goers commented that the final act lost them. I laughed and liked it, appreciated where it went, but also understand how you could feel that way. Perhaps brevity would have served the director best with the editing left for the extended edition. The comments about the gore are FAR overblown; fandango and rotten tomatoes "viewers" are trolling or something. The effects had an 80s feel which is a win for me. The Thing is one of my favorite films. It was nice to see something different. Refreshing. It's a good movie worth your view just don't lean on the hyperbolic reviews. Yes it has some gonzo parts but so did the Evil Dead. I will keep an eye out for this director moving forward. Ultimately I think with some tighter editing and I'd give a few more stars. Also if you do go see it just buy in, obviously the medical aspects have to be taken like the Force or Magic in other flicks.
