Writer/director/cameo actor M. Night Shyamalan wanted to make a movie where he could showcase the talents of his daughter, Saleka. I give him an E for Effort. Saleka does a nice job. She's totally convincing as a pop star. I don't know if her songs were good or not (I'm old) but they sounded that they could be popular. The concert scenes looked like a real concert. Saleka also does a nice job when she's off the stage and has to act. If Saleka wasn't able top hold her own, this movie would have been a disaster. It's not. But Daddy M. Night does let his daughter down. His script is stupid. "Trap" is totally unbelievable every step of the way.
I'm a big fan of the films of John Carpenter. He may have fumbled here and there but, for the most part, Carpenter has a solid batting average. "Ghosts of Mars" does land on the plus side of Carpenter's ledger but on the lower half of that side. "Ghosts of Mars" is a good looking movie. The cast is very likeable with the red hot Natasha Henstridge. "Ghost of Mars" wraps up with a "if she wasn't wearing that she'd be naked" moment that out does Sigourney Weaver's strip down scene in "Alien". I was enjoying "Ghost of Mars" but that scene puts the movie over the finish line. Henstridge truly shines and lifts this movie to stuff of legends.
"F/X" is a fun movie. It's filled with clever ideas, great action and a excellent cast. The cast is top-notch with Brian Dennehy coming in as Best in Breed. Dennehy not only gives a great performance but he also looks really cool. He's a big guy with wild hair and big moustache. I remember liking "F/X" a lot way back when. I saw it in the theater (Movie World, Douglaston, NY). I rented it on videos and watched it whenever I saw it was on cable. For whatever reason, I lost track of this movie. I watched it last for the first time in years (thanks Tubi). I enjoyed it much as used to. Now on to "F/X 2".
