Gladiator II is practically and technically great- a real "Movie". The performances are universally good/great. The score is decent.
The story itself feels rushed and a little dull.
The colosseum battle scenes are pretty great.
Overall a fine watch. I don't think I'd watch it again but I certainly had a relatively pleasant time watching.
Okay now for my longer review:
I remember watching the opening fight scene from Gladiator and finding it rather grisly. The lighting was very dark and gritty and the tension was pretty palpable. With this film, the opening battle is lacking that same depth (and I mean physical depth of lighting) compared to its predecessor. This is a common issue I found with how the film looked and also with how the story was told- just a lack of depth in general.
On a positive- I think it was very well crafted from a practical point of view. The acting was good from everyone and rather sublime from Washington. I wish Mescal had more to work with as I felt his character was either in a fight scene or just saying similar lines in the same tone of voice pretty much throughout. He is a fine actor and did a good job, however I feel that his character needed fleshing out a bit more.
Anyway, a good film to watch in the cinema... I don't think it will hold in my memory for that long though. 6/10.
