Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

About us

About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

  • In Cameroon, women are leading the charge in a vibrant movement to document and celebrate the country's rich cultural heritage. For almost two years, the Women Association for Technology and Innovation (WAFTAI) has led Wiki N’zuñdeuh, an initiative that promotes and saves the cultural identities of the Cameroon people. In collaboration with the Cameroon Ministry of art and culture, Wiki Loves Museums, Kiwix, Cameroon Institutes of fine arts, and museums, the initiative has recruited 21 new Wikimedia contributors – 14 of whom are women – and expanded the knowledge of museums, festivals, traditional dances, and stories. Alongside its cultural impact, the initiative aims to improve education and tourism. Students and teachers have engaged in edit-a-thons, upload-a-thons, and data-thons. • A passionate advocate for free knowledge and the Welsh language, Wikimedia contributor Jason Evans celebrates a decade of collaboration between Wikimedia UK and the National Library of Wales. Evans, who joined the library as its Wikipedian in Residence, is now its Open Data Manager. During the last 10 years, he has overseen the sharing of 150,000 images to Wikimedia Commons, 97 workshops and edit-a-thons, and the creation of thousands of new Wikipedia articles, most of them in Welsh. “If, as a society, we continue to value the vision of free knowledge for all, the Wiki projects will continue to be the most effective way of achieving this, and the most effective way of feeding new knowledge into the digital space,” Evans says. Read more about his experiences – both the achievements and challenges – and what’s next for the library’s collaboration with Wikimedia UK ➡️ https://w.wiki/D9iD

  • Ever wanted to explore the history of a hidden gem? Wikimedia Korea volunteers are doing just that. Part of the WikiTambang photography initiative, these exploring trips expand the imagery of South Korea’s cities and cultural heritage sites. There’s been at least one WikiTambang each year since 2019, and on an average trip, volunteers take and upload 200 photos to Wikimedia Commons. This February, volunteers traveled to Yeoncheon and Pocheon, cities that are near Seoul, but slightly off the beaten path. They photographed architecture and parks as well as images that capture facilities vital to everyday life – like Yeoncheon’s water tower and train station and Pocheon’s sports complex and university gates. While current efforts focus primarily on cultural assets, organizers would like to one day document additional scenery of chosen cities. Learn more about these treks ➡️ https://w.wiki/D99S

  • Women’s history is preserved, shared, and celebrated across Wikimedia projects – all powered by a global community dedicated to free knowledge. 📚 Wikipedia spotlights notable women in every field, ensuring that their contributions are documented. 🗣️ Wikiquote collects powerful words on women’s rights and feminism. 📖 Wikisource provides access to works by women authors, making their voices freely available. From biographies to literature to activism, Wikimedia projects help uphold women’s history across a variety of mediums. While progress has been made, there are still significant gaps in representation. By contributing, we can help ensure that women’s stories are documented, honored, and made public. • Experience the vibrant richness of Kerala, India’s culture through Onam, its annual harvest and Hindu cultural festival. Through the Wiki Loves Onam contest, the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group (Wikimedians of Kerala User Group) helped capture the essence of the festival in breath-taking photos and videos that are now available on Wikimedia Commons. The images exhibit performers donning colorful make-up and masks to embody tigers and leopards during Pulikkali, a popular folk festival, as well as the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a featured event in which tens of thousands of people watch snake boats compete on the Punnamada Lake. Additional images and videos showcase processionals and performances celebrating traditional arts, dance, and culture. Beyond capturing the festival’s imagery, Wiki Loves Onam volunteers created 40 new Wikipedia articles, updated 17 existing ones, and improved the festival-related information and media available on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. • Bhutan, a land of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is welcoming a growing Wikimedia community. 🇧🇹 Dzongkha, the country’s official language, is spoken by the majority of the population, and while Dzongkha Wikipedia started more than 10 years ago, the community recognizes a need for new, sustainable ideas and voices. Dzongkha Wikipedian Kheng Singye Dorji reached out to the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group for advice on helping to build a more active community. Along with Bengal Wikimedians Ananya Mondal and User:Bodhisattwa, Dorji held two workshops where volunteers discussed ways to build community and support the digital preservation of Bhutan’s culture, language, and heritage. The workshops also spotlighted innovative projects that highlight Bhutan’s unique natural wonders, including Wiki Loves Butterfly, a digital conservation effort that has contributed around 15,000 high-quality images to Wikimedia Commons.
