Here is a great FREE resource for anyone who wants to add functional accessibility testing specs to a project or just learn how to test components for accessibility on the web or mobile: https://lnkd.in/gNqHTg5X It allows you to select the components on your page and generate testing instructions (for web or mobile) along with expected results. Better yet, the instructions can be automatically formatted in English or using the Gherkin format (Given, When, Then). Real gold!

#CoDesign according to the #NDIA #NDIS Doesn't look like #CoDesign. No mention of #UNCRPD in *OUR* (ie #NDIA's) #CoDesign principles. A little hint: the #UNCRPD is *THE* design determinant. #CoDesign *CAN'T* happen without explicit commitment to #UNCRPD. Explains why the #NDIS Bill breaches #HumanRights The #CoDesign Advisory Group - which "provides strategic advice to the NDIA on the implementation of co-design and engagement processes in the disability community" -  hasn't met in 9 months. This article highlights why form fields should always be enabled. Authors should consider accessibility and the user experience before disabling a button too. A decision tree and a variety of examples are provided. #accessibility

Confronting ableism to build a more inclusive web https://buff.ly/4aSyJaa The accessibility (or lack thereof) of web software starts with the assumptions made in the research process. Many web practitioners work on high-powered computing devices, with high-resolution desktop displays, high-precision pointer devices (mouses), and high-speed bandwidth connections. Because we spend much of our professional time in these environments, we often assume that our users are in similar environments. Moreover, we assume that our users interact with their hardware the way that we do; we assume that users experience the world in the way that we do. Though nearly 60% of global web traffic comes from mobile devices, we assume our way into a web where everyone is sat at a desktop with a high-speed broadband connection, using full color vision to precision-click the interfaces in front of them.Source: Confronting ableism to build a more inclusive web ()

Check out the newest draft of the WCAG 3.0 Guidelines. It is currently in the exploratory phase and the final version will probably be ready sometime between 2026-2028. These new guidelines are meant to apply broadly to devices like wearables and mobile devices, which weren't part of the scope of WCAG 2.0. Content that meets WCAG 2.2 A and AA standards should meet the minimum requirements for WCAG 3.0. The rating system itself is changing too as WCAG 3.0 will use bronze, silver, and gold categories. #accessibility https://lnkd.in/dzQFBmzu

“The value of design isn't actually in producing visual artifacts, but in the process that leverages those artifacts.” Excellent article by Pavel Samsonov reminding us all of what it actually means to * design * something! Anyone who has ever interviewed me and asked me to “tell me about your process” has gotten an earful about this. The value of design will always be in producing a deliverable that embodies decisions made about benefits to the user-which requires understanding the user well enough to be able to make those decisions. https://lnkd.in/gBfMeVJn

Is Accessibility a Science or an Art? I’ve been reflecting on a question that often comes up in our field: Is digital accessibility more of a science or an art? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! The Science Side📊 : - Standards and Guidelines: • We have WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) that give us a clear framework to follow. • There are tools and techniques to systematically test and measure compliance. -Assistive Technologies: • Think about screen readers or voice recognition software – they depend on precise coding to work effectively. • Consistency and accuracy are crucial for these tools. - Data-Driven Decisions: • User testing and analytics help us pinpoint accessibility barriers. • Quantitative research is key to driving improvements and validating our solutions. The Art Side:🎨 - User Experience (UX) Design: • Empathy and creativity are at the heart of understanding diverse user needs. • Designing for accessibility often requires innovative and user-centered approaches. - Inclusive Design: • It’s a balancing act to merge aesthetics with functionality. • Creating seamless experiences for all users involves a lot of intuition and creativity. - Storytelling and Engagement: • Communicating accessibility features effectively can enhance user engagement. • Crafting narratives that resonate with users helps foster a more inclusive culture. Example: ASL Interpreter vs. Captions 🖐🏻 One debate that really highlights this balance is choosing between an ASL interpreter and captions. - Scientific Perspective: • Captions can be systematically generated and ensure compliance with accessibility standards. • They are quantifiable and can be measured for accuracy and timing. - Artistic Perspective: • An ASL interpreter brings a human touch, conveying emotion and nuance that captions may miss. • It requires understanding the audience and creatively integrating the interpreter into the content.
