Alternative forms
- е (je)
Etymology
Stressed [ʲe] regularly developed into [ʲɵ] before hard consonants. The letter ё (jo) was later created to reflect this, the diaresis probably being inspired by the German diaeresis being used for umlaut, but is often ignored in print. Its first appearance in typography was in 1797.
Pronunciation
Letter
ё • (jo) (lower case, upper case Ё)
- The seventh letter of the Russian alphabet, called ё (jo), and written in the Cyrillic script.
Usage notes
- This letter almost invariably bears the word stress.
- Its use is optional as it is equally accepted and common to write simple е (je). While ё (jo) is always used in dictionaries and children’s books, other usage varies and depends on the preferences of the writer and/or publisher.
- When [ʲɵ], [jɵ] do not go back to etymological е (je), they are normally spelt ьо (ʹo) and йо (jo), as in батальон (batalʹon), район (rajon). However, ё (jo) is used to represent the front-rounded vowels /ø/, /œ/ of languages like French and German, as in Кёльн (Kjolʹn).
