      The surnames and (xiāo) were originally distinct, and was a rare surname. In Mainland China, was simplified to in the second round of Chinese character simplification promulgated in 1977. Though the second round of simplification was officially rescinded in 1986, many individuals in Mainland China originally surnamed (Xiāo) but had their surname simplified to did not change their surname back to (Xiāo).
