polar axis (plural polar axes)

  1. (astronomy) Of an equatorial mounting, the axis of rotation that is positioned parallel to the axis of the Earth, allowing a telescope to be turned in an hour angle or a right ascension.
  2. (mathematics) A fixed line, usually horizontal, used in polar coordinates and from which an angle coordinate is measured.
