Security lock disappeared for PNC account after updating my iPad

The security padlock is no longer appearing for pnc.com and I am wary of using my account. Is this due to the recent ipad update?

Safari and some other modern browsers no longer show the padlock icon. Simply tapping the Safari (or other Browser's) Address field will show the full URL.

When using TLS/SSL (i.e. the URL begins with "https"), the connection between your device and host is encrypted. A padlock icon is not, of itself, a reliable indication of privacy or ultimately that your connection to the intended host is secure; Bad Actors can use encryption in exactly the same way as bona-fide host connections.

You should not rely upon seeing a padlock icon as any guarantee of connection safely - and for this reason, its use is slowly being deprecated.

NB: Unlike Safari, some third-party Browser Apps (e.g. Firefox, Opera) do still show a padlock icon.

Corollary

For iOS/iPadOS 18.x, you can configure Safari to warn when you are not connecting to an encrypted web page:

Settings > Apps > Safari > [Privacy & Security] Not Secure Connection Warning - set to ON
