I actually think the sniper scene is the more "heroic" of the two scenes, the Christmas tree scene is wreckless if anything, I really wonder which part Murtaugh's line was originally referring to? But alas the line would need to be amended or something to "stunts" or specifically mentioning the sniper bit to be smooth with the longer cut. Murtaugh at the range also feels redundant when him and Riggs are there a bit later together. I think the hooke... I mean escort scene is a nice character moment, maybe it could have been left alone. The dog/tv stuff does feel like added weight not important to the story, but it's decent. The sniper scene is so cool, but I think only one introduction like that works, and the Christmas tree scene is overall funnier with more action and impact to show off how unhinged Riggs is.
That’s exactly why I don’t think the sniper scene works:
A) it gives Riggs 2 on the job ‘introductions.’
B) the sniper scene makes Riggs ultimately look heroic. The Christmas tree lot makes Riggs look undeniably unbalanced and possibly suicidal. For this character and this story, the Christmas tree lot is the tonally and narratively correct introduction, even if it’s slightly at odds with Murtaugh’s later line.

It was pretty suicidal of Riggs to walk out in the open, 25 yards from a guy having the high ground with a RIFLE. But a lot of that is covered with movie magic and because Riggs asked if the guy was accurate at all.
Still, I also think it was better that it was taken out of the TC. The Christmas tree scene established his unhinged tendencies better.

(Also, I have to remember that if I meet Riggs, do NOT have pine needles around. Or is it the smell that makes him angry? Can I have one of those Pine Tree Air Fresheners, or will that ALSO set him off? Is that why he lives in California, so he can be less angry since palm tress don't set him off? Also, I still think $100k for trees is a ridiculous price. Anyway, I digress...)

But there were children literally in the line of fire. That’s like saying firefighters are suicidal for running INTO a burning building when there are people who need to be saved. The method might be crazy, but it’s a decidedly different scenario and’s motivation than standing in a Christmas tree lot with a drug dealer’s gun up to your head repeatedly saying, “Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me!”

Yeah, I haven't watched that 'sniper' scene in many years at this point. I just remember that he asked the right questions to get a proper understanding of the scenario before walking into it, so it wasn't just a thoughtless attempt to possibly die due to his suicidal thoughts, but more to handle it before things got worse. He measured and weighed the options and determined to go in based on the urgency of the situation. I remember that much.
Just like you were saying, it's a redundant scene overall because there are then TWO "setup" scenes with Riggs, and asking to be shot because he's mad that Christmas trees cost $100k is way more unhinged.

I completely get folks who say the sniper scene is redundant, but I also had forgotten about the kids being targeted, so if anything, I now feel it's THAT scene Murtaugh is talking about when he is referencing the "pretty heroic stunt", as of course taking out the sniper is more heroic (not to mention-"badass" ) than shooting the drug dealers! While the tree scene makes it much more obvious how suicidal Riggs really is ("Shoot me! Shoot me!"...).

Joe Pesci was very scaled back in this one after being insufferable in LW3. The driving stunts in this were outstanding. And it was great to see some of the old HK guys like Eddy Ko. I didn't realize Corey Yuen did the fight work. Will definitely pick this up on Ultra HD when the time comes.
My problem with Pesci in 4 is that he plays the character differently than in previous entries. Either he forgot what made the character fun or he just didn't give a shit. The froggy scene is his one redeeming moment. The less said about Rock the better.

My guess? Is by 1998 he was sick of being typecasted as the loud mouthed cartoon comic relief from Home Alone. Which is the exact performance he gave in LW3. I thought he gave a much more nuanced dramatic performance in LW2. If anything LW4 is almost a middle ground between 2 and 3, but he did also seem to be phoning it in somewhat, according to the wikis he got paid a pile of dough for the 4th movie, if he was working without a script basically maybe he was even adlibbing some scenes especially the dumb one with Rock about the cell phones. I thought the shark/boat scene was the funniest one with him in LW4. Or maybe he was just getting too old for this ****.

LW3 might have some issues, but it still manages to be better than LW4. Quite happy to watch either, though.

Obviously he's at his best in 2.

I think his performance in 3 is at least still likeable and fairly funny.

Whereas in 4 he was loud, unfunny and obnoxious.

No one talks about Lethal Weapon 5 or Lethal Weapon 6, I noticed.

Murtaugh's line is pretty easy to understand. He wasn't there, he heard about the incident from another cop, and co-workers are always exaggerating things or getting them altogether wrong. It would not surprise me in the least if an officer who wasn't involved in the incident said something like "hey; did you hear what this undercover cop did? He was on a drug bust and took out all of the dealers by himself!"

That's how I always figured it happened. Murtaugh said he was "heroic" based on the info he had.

As far as I know, all countries that include a Blu-ray will use the legacy disc, not a new one (unless a Blu-ray never existed, as in the case of Panic Room). This applies to the upcoming Dirty Harry 4K releases in Japan and Europe, as well as the Se7en 4K + Blu-ray in Japan (which I believe was the only region to include the legacy Blu-ray—a great find!).

Side note: Do you have a link to the Japanese Lethal Weapon edition? My UK order just became undeliverable, and I prefer ordering from Japan since they use proper Amaray cases instead of cheap steelbook packaging a lot of the time.

Edit: Never mind, found it!

Has anyone muxed the old 5.1 track to the UHD yet? Any timing issues to speak of? Also while I'm at it was the old 5.1 a standard Dolby Stereo to 5.1 conversion, or did this release in 70mm and they used that track? Plan on picking this up soon and while the new Atmos may be "cool" I want the original options as well. Other than that it seems to be an exceptional release.
