Brief Description *

I've been playing plenty of MegaMek games against Princess over the years and have seen plenty of occasional weird movement behavior on her part. From all my extensive experience, i started to notice some possible patterns. I'm coming to a conclusion that there is a high possibility that Princess have issues with utilization of the minimum movement rule.

Specifically, i believe that Princess either can't do moves that possible only by minimum movement rule at all, or weights such moves improperly somehow, to the point of being extremely unwilling to do them.

I, unfortunately, don't have any concrete evidence to prove this theory, and it's difficult to get any (according to one of the devs, there no proper tools to debug Princess movements at the moment). I can, however, describe some common cases that led me to this educated guess:

  • Sometimes particular infantry units just don't move after initial deployment, or after being unloaded from a transport. They just sit there doing nothing, until maybe they get approached by the enemy units. I can't figure out exact conditions that cause such behavior, but quite possible that these units simply end up in positions where they can only move with a minimum move rule, which makes Princess unable to move them at all.
  • Princess highly undervalues positioning CI in any kind of cover (buildings, wood hexes and such). She often moves them in the open, even when there is a good cover right next to the infantry unit. My guess is that she ignores cover because infantry unit can only move into it using minimum movement rule. (It is possible that Princess simply don't realize CI vulnerability in the open terrain, but that doesn't contradicts my initial theory, and can be combination of both)
  • I also noticed that Princess tend to be significantly better with jump infantry and battle armor. Due to jump MP, these units don't need to utilize minimum movement rule, thus potentially proving that it's not an infantry issue, but a ground movement issue.
  • Occasionally, ejected pilots and vehicle crews stay in place, instead of moving to withdraw, even though they clearly should (and chat message confirms it).
  • Princess weird relationship with water: she usually willing to move units into water, but after that they often get stuck, staying in place forever. (This might also be due to difficult PSRs, but again, that doesn't contradicts my initial theory. It can be combination of both)
  • When fast infantry movement optional rule is in play, Princess often unnecessary using it. Possibly this also the case of trying to squeeze more MP, because she doesn't see using minimum movement as a possible option.* (*This one was reported by someone else. I was fairy certain there should be an issue about this, but i can't find one)
  • There is also very dated, but possibly related issue with an practical example: Princess should navigate rather than spin in place #2541

If my theory is true, this could be a huge handicap to Princess usage of conventional infantry, as well as other units in some specific cases of complex terrain/MP reducing weather and planetary conditions/low MP units. This, at very least, should be worth investigating. It may be the cause of many conditional issues with Princess movement.

3. Steps to Reproduce

Best i can suggest is to try making scenarios with such extreme conditions, that all Princess controlled units can only move using minimum movement. This should be possible by combination of:

  • Usage of very low MP units, especially conventional infantry. Make sure they don't have jump MP.
  • Map that is entirely covered in hexes with high MP cost
  • Combination of weather/planetary conditions that severely reduce MP

Attach Files

Simple test attempt - conventional infantry on a map completely covered by heavy and ultra heavy woods:
MinMoveTest_CIForest.sav.gz

During my test, MG and jump platoons moved fine, but rifle and SRM ones refused to move at all. Possibly 0 MP infantry are handled differently, but i can't explain the difference between MG and SRM platoons.

Severity *

Medium (Gameplay Limitation): Non-core functionality is impaired, providing a suboptimal but playable experience.

MegaMek Suite Version *

0.50.06* (cases i described were observed across multiple different versions, up to 0.50.06, and behavior appears to be the same across them all. Test save was made in 0.50.06)

Operating System *

Windows 7

Java Version *

Eclipse Adoptium 17.0.12

Final Verification

  • I confirm this is a single, unique issue that hasn't been reported before
  • I have included all necessary information and files to help reproduce this issue
  • I have asked on MegaMek Discord about this issue
  • I have confirmed this issue is being opened on the correct repository: MegaMek, MegaMekLab, or MekHQ
