To give an example with python2:

with open(u’dir/name_\u03bb’, ‘w’):
pass

os.walk(‘dir’) will returns the filename name_?
os.walk(u’dir’) will returns the filename name_λ

One solution could be to force use of unicode on Windows (and probably on macOS) and keep bytes on Linux.
