Global installation as it is currently described is convenient but bears problems when updating tbot: Newer tbot might not be 100% compatible with old projects.
Instead, one could install tbot into a project-specific virtualenv and pin the version to something that's known to work. This approach should be detailed in the documentation as well.

Since this issue is quite old already and I (without even thinking about it) do basically everything related to python within an isolated conda environment, just my two cents on this.
When utilizing a conda environment one can simply install tbot as described (but without the --user flag) and everything is done. You can immediately execute tbot without adding anything to PATH. I guess this is pretty convenient. @Rahix I could document the approach in more detail if you would like to add that.
