Hi everyone,

As discussed, let’s make some schematic maps of our hometowns! You can find the slides from our class here & a video of my Outlier talk on this.

You can see some of the previous schematic map exercises for reference.

You can follow the following steps for your schematic map:

  1. Scale, Audience & Purpose
  2. Mental model sketch
  3. Tracing relevant aspects from OSM
  4. Abstraction: Grids & geometric shapes
  5. Simplification vs Minimal
  6. Elements of the city
  7. Visual hierarchy
  8. Aesthetic directions
  9. Design Details (Icons, Typography, Legend, Context)
  10. Multi-lingual versions (Options)

Here are some references to go through:

Schematic Hometown Mapping - Lucknow

Idea 1: A nature lover’s guide to Lucknow’s parks and gardens

Where: A map of the parks and gardens in the city of Lucknow.
For who: For nature lovers who want to explore places, go out for a stroll, or want to have a nice fun picnic in the winter sun.
Why: As a tourist or a local, the instinctive thing to do in a city is eat, shop, and go sightseeing. Cities with a rich number of parks and gardens offer fun and unique things to do apart from the basics.

Idea 2: Spending one day in the heart of Lucknow

Where: Hazratganj, the heart of Lucknow. The high street for all things food and fun. Also contains multiple shopping spots.
For who: Anyone who has only one day to spend in the city and wants to try good food and go shopping.
Why: To not waste time eating boring food and going to fake Chikankari shops while visiting Lucknow.

Schematic Hometown Mapping - Sharjah and Bangalore

I've sketched models of two cities I have grown up in.

Bangalore
image

Ideas for a schematic map :

  1. Traffic-time distortion
Where : A map of high-traffic routes in Bangalore that are distorted and sized by the time it takes to get through the traffic
Who : A seasoned local or a tourist would be able to see how even short distances can feel stretched out because of Bangalore's traffic issues.
Why : Bangalore's high vehicular density has caused infamous traffic jams that disproportionately stretch ideal travel times. This map would shed some light on the condition of transit in the city and the need for multimodal transport

  2. Quiet pub-city
Where : A curated map of pubs in the city that don't play loud music
Who : Foodies would be able to find some rare quiet spots where they can enjoy a drink over some audible conversations
Why : Bangalore, which is famous for being a pub-city, has started to produce spaces that beat the purpose of socialising. (This is a hypothesis)

  3. Pedestrian first
Where : A map of stretches in Bangalore where one can walk on uninterrupted footpaths
Who : Pedestrians and urbanists would want to see walking routes in the city that are most pedestrian friendly
Why : Bangalore's pedestrian infrastructure has not kept up with its rapid car-centred growth. This map would shed some light on the state of public infrastructure

Sharjah
image

Ideas for a schematic map :

  1. Water bodies to visit
Where : A curated map of waterfronts, wadis, beaches to visit in UAE
Who : A tourist would be interested in knowing water-based activities in a high-tech desert country
Why : Sharjah (and the nearby Emirates) has many waterfronts that make for a refreshing change in the cityscape of the desert country

Tracing a map of Sharjah's waterfront destinations

map trace

Tracing and abstraction versions

The shape of the waterfronts in Sharjah coincidentally resembles a set of waves. This was an apt metaphor for the waterfront life I want to show in the city. Here's how my tracing went

  • This first version was a literal translation on a hexagonal grid. Wasn't quite there yet with that wave form as I'd hoped

process-1

  • This second version was getting there. I'm still not quite sure what to do with that minor wave in the bottom left of the map.

process-2

  • This final version is where I've arrived at for now.

process - 3

Adding elements of the city

process - 4

process - 5

I used Kevin Lynch's elements as a checklist and added some districts in different shades. I then used geometric motifs from window screens of the Khaleeji style to give each district a texture. This will subtly differentiate them without distracting too much from the layers that will follow.

Thinking about aesthetics

Here's a quick moodboard I made on the Khaleeji (Gulf) sense of life.

Moodboard

Refining

Not much progress here but I am working on spot illustrations for the points of interest

process - 6

I completed the illustrations and I'm very close to finishing now. I was experimenting with 3 different layouts.

layout 3

Here's what the map with the inset would look like

Ideas-

  1. Underground Art and Music Scene in Calcutta
Where: A map of indie music venues, underground art exhibitions, poetry slams, and alternative cultural hotspots.
Who: Young, artsy tourists seeking offbeat experiences.
Why: Calcutta’s vibrant youth culture deserves its spotlight beyond traditional heritage, making this an exciting way to explore the city

WhatsApp Image 2025-01-07 at 00 48 12

2.Street Food Circuits in Calcutta
Where: A map connecting famous street food zones, categorized by the type of cuisine ( sweets, rolls, phuchka).
Who: Food lovers, tourists, and anyone keen to explore Kolkata’s culinary diversity.
Why: Kolkata's street food is legendary, and a curated route would enhance the gastronomic experience. My friends here in NID recently visited Calcutta for a seminar and the culinary experience was mid, wish they had a curated map guiding them.

3.Soundscape of Calcutta
Where: A map of locations where you can experience unique soundscapes, like the ringing of temple bells in Kalighat, the bustling chatter of College Street, or the soothing sound of the Hooghly River at Princep Ghat.
Who: Young travelers seeking sensory experiences and ASMR enthusiasts.
Why: The auditory essence of Kolkata is a unique aspect of its cultural identity and an innovative way to connect with the city.

List of Cities I've lived in

Schematic Hometown Mapping - Gangtok

Concept 1 - Mapping Shortcuts

Where:
Between main Gangtok town and popular neighborhoods/landmarks.

Who:
For people who want to commute on foot and explore the potential of Gangtok as a walkable town or even beat the traffic during busy hours.

Why:
Nestled along a ridge, Gangtok's unique terrain lends itself to becoming a naturally pedestrian-friendly town. But due to an unhealthy, growing urban culture, people fail to recognize and accept this fact. During peak hours, people spend more than double the expected time waiting inside cars stuck in traffic when they can just pop out of their cars and walk to their destinations wayyy faster, while also getting some much needed fresh air and cardio on the way.

Concept 2 - Must-try food in MG Marg, Gangtok

Where:
In and around MG Marg in Gangtok.

Who:
For tourists looking to try the most coveted dishes from top restaurants/food joints in and around Gangtok town.

Why:
Nothing compares to the joy of spending an evening in Gangtok strolling leisurely with friends along MG Marg, especially after a satisfying meal. In a small town like Gangtok, where Zomato was introduced only two years ago, discovering the best local eateries—often cherished by the locals—can be quite a challenge.

Mental Model of Gangtok:
Gangtok Schematic '

7th Jan 2025
Final Concept - Discovering Gangtok on Foot

Where:
Within a 4km radius of Mahatma Gandhi Marg. (There is so much to see!)

Who:
For tourists who wish for a slow and rich experience of Gangtok, discovering the streets and uncovering stories hidden in plain sight, without having to go too far.

Why:
Tourists are usually seen scrambling at taxi stands to go "sight-seeing" around Gangtok covering 7-10 stops around town in a span of a few hours, getting overloaded with information, spending a lot of time stuck in traffic and losing out on the essence of what is it that actually makes Gangtok special.
