Hi everyone,

Find an example of a product (app, or web app or dashboard) that has an interesting use of maps in it. Look for something unique in terms of use of map, or map interaction patterns etc.

Add the following details:

  • Add a link to the source, explain how map helps in this context, show a screenshot/link to a gif/video about the interaction.
  • If there is any customization on the basemap style, mention that.
  • If this is using a map for geo-visualization, explain the geo-viz technique used based on the lecture today. You can find the slides here.

Komoot

https://www.komoot.com/
GIFs- https://www.komoot.com/help/routeplanner

Maps in Komoot not only provide navigation but also enhance the experience of discovering scenic and user-recommended routes. This is especially helpful for adventurers in unfamiliar areas.

Komoot works offline no matter how off grid you are.

With this app you'll be able to-

  1. Visualize and explore terrain for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and running.
  2. Plan routes that are optimized for their activity and preferences.
  3. Make informed decisions based on real-time information about trail conditions, elevation, and weather.

Komoot customizes the basemap by-

  1. Using OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, overlaid with custom styles via Mapbox.
  2. Enhancing trails, bike paths, and hiking routes with unique color schemes and annotations.
  3. Including user-generated data, such as highlights and points of interest

Map in an App

Preliminary Ideas:

  1. Find, borrow, lend books around you. A library of people.
  2. Plan a trip around the city, for a group of people by card matching.

App: PlantSnap

A location-based plant identification journal. The app lets you click pictures of plants around you, uses AI to identify them, and logs them into the journal. The map in the app lets you see everyone's entries around your location, essentially giving you the location of various plants in your city (and further).

There is no customization on the map. Your entry gets displayed on its own.

The map uses dots (as icons) to individually plot each entry with its location. When zoomed out, it clusters the entries to a green dot with the number on it. The map style is quite basic, not specific to the application.

Demographic Explorer Dashboard by North Carolina State University

Demographic Explorer Dashboard

  • How the Map Enhances the Application
This dashboard lets you explore demographic data by interacting with a map. We can click on specific areas, like neighborhoods or districts, to see detailed information about the people who live there. This makes it easier to understand how different populations are spread out and to spot trends, helps in making better decisions based on the data.

image

  • Customization of the Basemap Style
The map has been specially designed to highlight boundaries and important features related to demographics. This helps us quickly see and understand the differences between areas, making the data clearer and easier to follow.

image

  • Geo-Visualization Technique
The dashboard uses a technique called choropleth mapping, where different areas on the map are shaded in colors that reflect data values, like population size or income levels. This visual method helps users quickly compare different regions and see patterns in the data.

This Dashboard utilised a combination of choropleth mapping, point mapping, and interactive data layers to visualise the spread and impact of COVID-19 globally.

The map helped in Spatial Awareness of the Pandemic, revealing outbreak hotspots, which regions were most affected and how it evolved over time and most importantly, it offered a unified platform for understanding the global crisis.
