I'm using v4.1.2 via Yunohost and the default avatars do use initials? However I'm here to make a different complaint, that the avatars use FirstName MiddleName rather than FirstName LastName, which is a bit odd. They only use the latter if no middle name is present. Which is annoying. |

Note: I'm using the latest build VIA docker container (updated in the past 24 hours). The 5.0 release is shaping up well!

When creating people, the default avatars / profile pictures are very confusing. I don't like that a random avatar is assigned and there is seemingly no easy way to change it. This is very jarring and confusing because 9 times out of 10 the sex and race do not match the real person.
Describe the solution you'd like
Like Google contacts/messages, use the initials as the default avatar:
Let different initials set different colors.
Also allow uploading a photo or pasting a photo from the clipboard. This would make it very easy to add photos from many people at once (especially the clipboard part since you can go through facebook and take many screenshots in one session).
Describe alternatives you've considered (optional)
Can also just remove the avatars entirely or make them blank or use something like Gravatar (what Github uses for default avatars).
