Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

no

Describe the solution you'd like

it should not be default, but we should optionally be able to stop this extra verbiage. Just say the name of the file or folder that keyboard focus is on when browsing. E.g. when I push enter on a folder, when it opens, I should just hear the name of the first item therein. Likewise, when I backspace, I should hear only the name of the folder I just backed out of since it automatically gets focus in Windows10.

Describe alternatives you've considered

an add-on could handle this probably. There might even already be something that can do it but I don't know of one. I can't seem to get a dictionary entry to work. I can make an entry for items view and then another one for list, but items view list doesn't work. When I copy it from speech reviewer copier add-on, it doesn't work. It shows two spaces between view and list, but still doesn't work. I even tried a reg exp items view\s+list.

Additional context

listen to me navigate after fixing NVDA not to say items view list.zip

I made the items view temp dictionary entry and the list one, which obviously must be temporary as those are things that appear in lots of places, such as this issue lol. So I did this much just to hear the difference and man can I ever browse fast. I really, really would like to see this be a reality.

Hi,

Is this also the case with Narrator? In my testing, Narrator also says "items view list" when browsing through File Explorer.

Part of the reason why the dictionary workaround won't work properly is because "items view" and "list" are label and role of the folder/files list, respectively. In short, what you are proposing is a way to silence a control label and role/type defined by the app vendor (in this case, Microsoft), and I know that some had limited success via the speech dictionary method (I believe application dictionary add-on might be useful). Also, keep in mind that silencing control label and role in speech will not silence its braille presentation.

Thanks.

I only just checked Narrator, convinced that it does also say it, but interestingly enough, it does not, at least in 10ltsc2021. Still, I don't consider it a bug that NVDA announces this, I just want to be able to stop it. JAWS also says something, I believe it's Shell Folder View List View. It's just one of those things. Right up there with virtual buffers driving me nuts by saying the control type in html views first when using browse mode.

Tested on Windows 10 22H2 (AMD64) build 19045.5487 (French).

  • NVDA reports "Affichage des dossiers", equivalent of "Items view".
  • Narrator reports twice "Affichage des dossiers", equivalent of "Items view" and some more information.

So Narrator is even more verbose here, both when entering in a new folder (enter) or going backwards with backspace.

So, in Narrator, find and adjust this setting in the Narrator settings screen (ctrl+windows+n)

Change the level of context Narrator provides for buttons and other controls combo box 1 - No context collapsed

with no context, it doesn't say items view list. With higher numbers, 2 on up to 5, it gives more and more detail. I can't get it to read twice with any of those settings though. In any event, setting this to 1 yields the experience I'd like to be able to get with NVDA when browsing in explorer. It's probably not a desirable default, but it would be meaningful for productivity for many who knew how to disable that readout.
