I was testing fullscreen mode, since there was issues with the earlier version of Qt which VPaint 1.6 is built against. Generally speaking, fullscreen mode is better supported, there isn't this weird behaviour which I have with Qt 5.6, for example:
It works ok with Qt 5.11.2 (apart from the button style issues which I'll have to fix):
