It could be useful to have a mechanism that prof can turn on and off that allows students to send a message to the prof during the lecture (for example to ask the prof to go over a concept again).

One could also have this in a way that other students can upvote specific comments or questions. Probably the student should be able to choose if the message is anonymous.

UI-wise, I think this means having tabs in the running session, e.g. a live question tab, and a messaging tab, both for prof and student, so it's a substantial upgrade.
