I will make a reminder that any permission errors in the docker container about the user folder have no relation to my actual user folder as this is not mounted in the container.

This should simplify the process shlinkio/shlink-web-client#1359

Once that's merged, the only requirements are clonning the repo and running docker compose up. No more manual steps required.

Yeah, I was just reviewing this and there are a few things that could be improved, or at least documented, because they are things that have been introduced after the contributing guide was created and they were overlooked.

The first one is that the docker-compose.override.yml file tries to mount a volume on a local home directory that does not actually exist. The project expects you to create it, but that is not reflected in the guide.

The second one is that this home directory is attempted to be mounted on /home/alejandro (you figured this out yourself). That won't work unless you have an alejandro user in your system. This was a bit sloppy on my part 😅

So, what I think I'm going to do is:

Check if the project can do without mounting this home directory. I believe the reason I did this was to reuse npm's cache in multiple local node projects, but it couples it with the system and requires more manual steps, so it's not great.
Npm has evolved a lot since I first started doing this, so it's likely things work better now.
If this is not possible, at least document the requirement of creating a home directory.
Try to get rid of the docker compose override file entirely, but if it's not possible, at least:
1. Document what's the meaning of this file. For context, it was added to allow running commands in the container shell that generate files (npm install and such) and ensure those belong to the host user as well and can be manipulated outside the container as well (see user: 1000:1000 instruction).
2. Try not to hardcode usernames on it, and instead infer the system username somehow. If this is not possible, document the requirement of doing what you did: sed -i "s/alejandro/$USER/" docker-compose.override.yml.
