New Controlled Vocabulary Term

Term for new controlled value: https://dwc.tdwg.org/terms/#dwc:establishmentMeans

  • Submitter: @camiplata on behalf of @SIB-Colombia
  • Efficacy Justification (why is this change necessary?): Information about endemic species is key for decision making, many governments use this information to declare conservation programs and areas. Also, the publishers from the community of taxonomists desire to add this information to their taxonomic checklists.
  • Demand Justification (if the change is semantic in nature, name at least two organizations that independently need this term): taxonomist asosiations publishing checklists such as Grupo de coleopterólogos de Colombia, Asociación Colombiana de Ornitología, Asociación Colombiana de Mastozoología, GBIF? (I'm rigth @CecSve?)
  • Stability Justification (what concerns are there that this might affect existing implementations?): none
  • Implications for dwciri: namespace (does this change affect a dwciri term version)?: none

Proposed attributes of the new term:

  • Term name (in lowerCamelCase for properties, UpperCamelCase for classes): http://rs.tdwg.org/dwcem/values/e007
  • Term label (English, not normative): nativeEndemic
  • Organized in vocabulary (e.g., establishmentMeans, degreeOfEstablishment, pathway): establishmentMeans
  • Definition of the term (normative): A taxon with a natural distribution restricted to a single geographical area.
  • Usage comments (recommendations regarding content, etc., not normative): The term endemic is a subcategory of native and relates to geography, such as "areas of endemism", bioregions, and sometimes administrative boundaries. While a native taxon can naturally occur in several geographical areas an endemic taxon only occurs in one. It would mean "the dwc:Organism referred to is recognized as a member of a dwc:Taxon endemic to the dcterms:Location at the time of the dwc:Occurrence."
  • Refines (identifier of the broader term this term refines; normative): None
  • Replaces (identifier of the existing term that would be deprecated and replaced by this term; normative): None
  • ABCD 2.06 (XPATH of the equivalent term in ABCD or EFG; not normative): Not in ABCD

In addition to the above, the proposal would make the following change (in bold) to the term establishmentMeans:

  • Examples (not normative): endemic, native, nativeReintroduced, introduced, introducedAssistedColonisation, vagrant, uncertain
  • Refines (identifier of the broader term this term refines; normative): none
  • Replaces (identifier of the existing term that would be deprecated and replaced by this term; normative): none
  • ABCD 2.06 (XPATH of the equivalent term in ABCD or EFG; not normative): none
