Stas Sergeev reports (https://github.com/tkchia/causeway/pull/7), in the context of the CauseWay DOS extender,

Some DOSes set env seg to NULL, either when env is empty or always for the first process (aka permanent shell).

This issue is also relevant for newlib-ia16.
