For the week that ended on July 13th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Civil War topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its first week. Alex Garland's thriller opened in April 2024 to mostly positive reviews, topping the box office and eventually grossing over $68 million domestically and over $121 million worldwide. This week, Civil War had a perfect HD share of 100% and 45% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place is Shout Factory and GKIDS' The Boy and the Heron (AKA How Do You Live?) (君たちはどう生きるか), Studio Ghibli's latest anime film, for which legendary director Hayao Miyazaki came out of retirement, opened in Japan in July 2023 to box office success and critical acclaim. It did the same when it opened in the US in early December 2023, topping the box office on its opening weekend en route to a global total of over $294 million (becoming the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time), and winning dozens of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and in the UK, the BAFTA for Best Animated Film. This week, The Boy and the Heron sold 42% as many Blu-ray units as Civil War, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 47% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And debuting in third place is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Abigail (2024). The horror-comedy opened in April 2024 to positive reviews, topping the box office and grossing over $42 million worldwide. This week, Abigail sold 32% as many Blu-ray units as Civil War, with an HD share of 62%. No 4K UHD version was made available.
Elsewhere on the Blu-ray-only chart, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Twister (1996), which was released on 4K UHD this week, rose up to No. 5, while Lionsgate's Boy Kills World and Unsung Hero debuted at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively. Outside the top ten, Warner and MGM's Challengers (2024) debuted at No. 11 and BBC's Doctor Who: Tom Baker - Complete Season Four (AKA Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 15 in the UK) (1977-1978) came in at No. 12.
Elsewhere on the UHD Sellers chart, the Criterion Collection's Le Samouraï 4K came in at No. 16.

Wow this is the first week I've ever seen where the DVD share is under 50%. Maybe by 2050 they will finally be dead.

Wow. Civil War! Usually, the top-selling title for any given week is Transformers 8 or Fast and Furious 14 or some other remake or reboot. What a pleasant surprise. Perhaps we shall see a sequel to Civil War...?

This is surprising. Civil War didn’t perform exceptionally well, wasn’t generally well received, and I didn’t find it the least bit engaging, personally. I never would have expected its physical release to top any chart. Good for it! It may not have tickled my fancy but I thought it a perfectly serviceable film and original concept. I can respect the recognition it’s getting.

The 4k Blu ray release of CIVIL WAR is stunning!
One of the better recent new releases. Pic and audio reference quality
Film itself holds up on repeat viewings (at least for me).

I concur: Civil War is fantastic on 4K. I have seen it twice now. I think that the film will gain more recognition as a masterpiece in the years to come.

I watched my copy of Civil War and agree it is outstanding - the gunshots feel real. That said, the film's strength is something we don't see much - understatement.

I originally bought civil war on digital from youtube but upgraded to physical since the hdr on digital is really wonky, not sure what the deal is but not showing correctly on Chromecast, dark and hazy so maybe forcing a Dolby vision which my tv doesn't have? But the 4k disc is absolutely stunning, and I'm glad I upgraded

Shouldn't it be Civil War II? Did they forget a first one already happened?

@grandpallama, Every review and every opinion spoken about it I found at the time of its release was mid, at best, including my own. I don’t put any stock in aggravate sites that have repeatedly demonstrated to be highly inaccurate.

I liked Civil War but it takes a certain kind of person, I think you to be cynical to enjoy it. My mom was like “none of these characters are likeable, the black hair guy is a creep”. Well that’s real life!
