"…and if they don't hunt us down and blast us out of the sky, we set coordinates for Warial; it is the farthest-flung of our colonies."
— Ceretus[3]

Warial, along with Soirapt and Teash, was one of the three natural satellites orbiting Doisac, the Jiralhanae homeworld and the third planet in the Oth Sonin system.[2]

Overview[edit]

Environmental features[edit]

Warial had vast forests,[4] broad plains,[5] mountainous regions, and dangerous seas which the Jiralhanae sailed across. Storms of slow, blue lightning were not uncommon. These aforementioned bodies of water were the sites of graves.[6] The smog-filled barrens of Doda’keyt were home to toxic chemicals, used to create the stimulants ingested by Jiralhanae Berserkers.[7] The moon was additionally home to the brimstone-dockyards of Ividar Rux, used for repairing warships.[8] Warial also featured chalk fields, which the Banished used to create pigments and give the Volatile variant of the Flaktura Workshop Skewer its white chassis.[9]

Locations[edit]

Ecology[edit]

Warial was home to dense, vast forests of conifers[10] and goha trees, which grew at the windswept foothills of the moon's mountainous region, where they were strengthened by the relentless battering of violent sea winds.[4]

The maedobeast was a solitary hunter that preyed on elphadox which roamed the plains of Warial. The Jiralhanae Chieftain Gathgor dressed in the bones of "monsters" that prowled the Qabikian plains.[5]

History[edit]

Pre-Covenant[edit]

In early Jiralhanae history, their loosely held religion was based on the lunar cycles of Warial and the other two moons, as they perpetually haunted Doisac's skyline.[11] The moon was later colonised, along with Teash. Warial was noted for being the most far-flung of the Jiralhanae colonies.[3]

Covenant era[edit]

While hunting humans on Beta Gabriel in 2552, Ceretus hoped his clan would be able to hide away on Warial and blend in to avoid punishment for fleeing from the Fall of Reach.[3]

Following the collapse of the Covenant in 2552, Warial almost immediately fell into infighting between the various clans that dotted the surface. Unlike Teash, the Banished were unable to gain much of a stabilising foothold on Warial due to the local clans' distrust of anything resembling the Covenant empire of old. As such, the moon fell into a long and gruelling war of attrition as local factions fought bitterly over the limited local resources on-hand.[1] Due to Severan being the son of Tartarus and the animosity Tartarus garnered among some Jiralhanae, Severan was attacked at a fortified position on Warial.[4]

Postwar[edit]

The moon became home to raider lairs[12] and by September 2558, clans under the Voice of Maardoth on Warial were starving - something which prompted the chieftain, Hekabe, to attempt to seize more power for the sake of his people.[13]

On November 8, 2559, the Vanguard of Zaladon were gathering their forces on Warial as part of larger plans of the Banished. Cortana that day[4] would raze Doisac via Guardian Custodes, resulting in Warial's surface being struck by massive amounts of debris. The majority of outposts on the surface facing the cataclysm completely destroyed in the blast. In the end, only a few hundred thousand from Warial were able to escape the moon between Cortana's genocidal act and the cataclysmic events which followed it.[1] Some of these survivors included the forces gathered by the Vanguard of Zaladon.[4]

Government[edit]

Prior to the destruction of Doisac, Warial was home to various clans embroiled in bitter wars of attrition for the control of the moon's limited resources. As such, no one power held dominant sway over the moon. The Voice of Maardoth, based themselves out of Doisac[13], had sub-clans based on Warial while the Banished also tried to gain some sway over the moon to limited success.[1] The Warial's Wrath clan were one of those groups who accepted Atriox's offer, having abandoned the Covenant during the war with humanity and joined the Banished in 2550—well before the war's conclusion. The Vanguard of Zaladon, another Banished group, also hailed from Warial.[4]

Society[edit]

The destruction of Doisac rendered Warial—along with the other moons—completely uninhabitable, with only a few hundred thousand able to escape the apocalyptic devastation visited upon the moon.[1] As such, it presumably no longer has any functioning society.
