As the TV world kicks into high gear with Emmys season, streaming platforms are still hard at work to bring the latest in film and television right into your homes. August’s offerings on Hulu and Disney+ include a handful of new movies, family-friendly programming, a lot of “Ice Age” and “John Wick,” and the return of Chris Hemsworth’s quest for immortality. Disney+ has livestreams planned for outdoor adventures and World Princess Week, as well as the animated anthology “Eyes of Wakanda,” set in the “Black Panther” universe; while Hulu will premiere a new season of “King of the Hill” and a two-episode limited series about the wrongfully convicted Amanda Knox.

Jonathan Frakes has labelled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as his favorite since The Next Generation. The prequel show is set before the events of the original series and features an ensemble of known characters such as Spock, Uhura, Nurse Chapel, and Christopher Pike. The third season of the show is set to premiere this week on July 17.

Frakes played William Riker in The Next Generation and returned for the role in Picard. He has also directed multiple episodes of Tng, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and Discovery, before helming episodes in Strange New Worlds as well. The filmmaker echoed fans’ sentiment that the show is the best since Tng (via Cinema Blend).

Robert Beltran mentioned that his constant criticism of Star Trek: Voyager in interviews and press meets probably put him at risk of being fired. Beltran, who played first officer Chakotay in Voyager, was publicly unhappy with the direction of the show, especially after the introduction of Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, and was a vocal critic while it was airing.

Despite his dissatisfaction with how his role was heading in the show, he mentioned that he would not hesitate to do it all over again, and he ultimately loved working with the cast and crew of Voyager (via Star Trek).

I didn’t like some of the things that were going towards the last three years, and I risked being fired because I wasn’t happy creatively. But I was happy working and especially with the people I was working with. That was the main thing for me. I still enjoyed the work.

Rebecca Romijn mentioned that she is all the more excited for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ season 4 ahead of the third season’s premiere on July 17. The actress plays Una in the show, which is set before the events of The Original Series and features many of the same characters, like Spock, Uhura, Kirk, and Una, who Majel Barrett-Roddenberry first played.

The third season of the show picks up from the cliffhanger ending of the season 2 finale, which aired almost two years ago. While Strange New Worlds fans have been excited for season 3, Romijn spoke about the fourth one, which they are filming (via Nerdtropolis).

The nominations for the TCA Awards were announced on July 9, and the second season of the 3D animated Trek series was among the nominees in the Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming category. Star Trek fans have been enjoying a bounty of great shows in the last few years. Sadly, the world of streaming is a difficult thing and too often, even the best shows can suffer cancellations. It doesn’t make it easier; it’s just the economics of the business.

Akiva Goldsman, one of the three showrunners behind Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, recently revealed that the beloved series would be ending after its fifth season. The show has been the most highly-rated Star Trek show in the recent past, and its end was quite a blow to the fans as it gears up for its third season premiere.

Over the past few years, Paramount has been canceling much of the new Star Trek offerings, such as Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Prodigy. Currently, Strange New Worlds is the only live-action show running, while the upcoming Starfleet Academy is still in production. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will come to an end with season 5, which is its final season on Paramount+. The highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premieres July 17 on Paramount+ after a 2-year wait, following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 14. In 2024, Paramount+ ordered season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is currently in production.

CBS Studios and Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return for a fifth and final season. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 will be six episodes, with the series' five-season run totaling 46 episodes. Strange New Worlds season 5 will begin filming later this year. The crew of Star Trek: Prodigy’s U.S.S. Protostar is, for now, without a streaming home. Netflix quietly passed on a third season of the animated, kid-friendly Star Trek series just last week and is removing the series’ first two seasons by January.

The show’s creators, however, are not giving up hope for the animated series, which boasts a nearly perfect 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dan and Kevin Hageman, the co-creators of Prodigy, took to the social media site X to address the removal of Prodigy from Netflix and what the future holds for the animated series that follows a group of ragtag aliens who work together after they find an abandoned ship.

"Star Trek: Prodigy" is dead. Again. 

The Nickelodeon-branded animated "Star Trek" series has had a rough go of it. Infamously, the series was aired on a weird schedule. Its first 20-episode season was aired in two parts, with the first part coming in October of 2021 and the second part not dropping until the following year. Then, while the second season was still in production, the series was hastily and inexplicably canceled by Paramount, upsetting its slowly growing continent of fans. Not only that, "Prodigy" was also bafflingly removed from Paramount+, making it immediately unavailable. This was a startling decision, as Paramount has long held the reins on "Star Trek," and Trekkies assumed the company would want to keep all the components of its most lucrative franchise close to them.

Its cancellation came during a great culling at Paramount+ which saw the end of most of its "Star Trek" shows.

The crew of the U.S.S. Protostar is looking for a new home. The 3D-animated Star Trek: Prodigywill not be getting a Season 3 - at least on Netflix, according to What’s on Netflix. The animated Prodigy featured the story of a crew of young aliens who work together after finding an abandoned starship. Initially premiering on CBS All Access (now rebranded as Paramount+), the kids’ animated show was taken off the streamer in an unprecedented move after its first season, despite love from fans and critics alike.

While it was later picked up by Netflix, which even released its second season, the streaming giant has reportedly now dropped plans for a third season, and Prodigy is left without a home again. The franchise’s first animated series is now again in limbo and might just be gone for good.

Starting in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, fans were ushered into the 'Nu Trek' era of Star Trek. It's an era that started with the aforementioned Discovery series and has gone through Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The era is far from done, but those are the key series that have made up this new era.

During the Nu Trek Era, one of the things that have become commonplace is the reliance (or overreliance) on past characters and actors from previous shows. Every show has either over-relied on previous characters or previous talents to bolster their show. It started with Spock and later Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley in Discovery (among others). Lately, we've seen the likes of Chakotay and Harry Kim pop up in Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks' respectively.

Star Trek: Prodigy debuted its second season on Netflix in July 2024. Since that time, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on a possible season three renewal. Though the series ended on a note that could possibly wrap up the storylines, there is still plenty of room for more adventures, which is why fans are still asking for Prodigy to be saved.

A fan campaign with aerial banner flyover has already taken place since it was so successful in helping to gain Netflix's attention after Paramount+ decided to cancel the series after only one season. And odds are good fans aren't done with spreading the word and petitioning for another season. The more attention Prodigy has, the better its chances.

The overwhelming financial success of "Star Trek" can only be ironic. "Star Trek," after all, takes place in a post-capitalist utopia wherein money has become a thing of the past, and want has been largely defeated. Here on Earth in the year 2025, however, the makers of "Star Trek" are rolling in gold-pressed latinum. We've already touched on how Kathryn Janeway, and by proxy her actress Kate Mulgrew, appeared in over 200 episodes across Star Trek. For 30 years, and across two series, Mulgrew has built up a huge resume in Star Trek alone. When we talk about the greatest captain in Star Trek history, we don't often mention Kathryn Janeway. It's a shame because she should be in the conversation. The two names that get mentioned the most, and maybe rightfully so (or not rightfully so depending on your point of view) are Jean-Luc Picard and James T. Kirk.

Played first and most famously by Patrick Stewart and William Shatner respectively, Picard and Kirk have long been the franchise's standard bearers. As the first two series captains, they often are pitted against one another in debates, with many being split on who really is the best captain of the franchise.

In the coming months, we hope to hear news about the next two Star Trek films. We're supposed to get two of them and while neither have official names yet, we've been referring to them as Star Trek 4 and Star Trek: Origins. However, both names will likely be changed in time.

The theatrical films have long been a source of enjoyment for fans, with the series producing more good films than bad. Albeit the film franchise is far from perfect. Still, the last three films were successful to a degree, with it peaking financially with Star Trek 2009, only for things to come crashing back down with Star Trek: Beyond. The latest film in the modern franchise was praised for a lot of reasons, but the trailer did seem to turn off a lot of potential fans before the film even came out.

The fourth episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, “Hitting the Big Time,” explored the ramifications of Peter Parker collaborating with Norman Osborn. Though anyone familiar with Spider-Man’s rogues gallery knows that Norman is destined to descend into villainy, he has served as a genuine ally so far. In this episode, Norman revealed that he had tasked Oscorp’s secret projects division with developing a series of new, high-tech suits to replace Peter’s homemade Spider-Man costume. Though they all provided some unique benefits, these were outweighed by the problems they caused Peter.

By the end of the episode, Norman realized that Peter needed a simpler suit that embraced the Spider-Man identity instead of trying to replace it with something better. Though this plot was unique to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the costumes featured within were not.

For better or worse, Star Trek: Section 31 is officially in the books. The final verdict? Maybe the worst piece of property Star Trek has ever produced. It's the truth, as fans, both old and new alike, have rejected this film. Even divisive series like Star Trek: Discovery have a strong, but small, fandom. There are people who will argue in defense of that series.

They'll cite season three as a high point, and with that, one more positive than Section 31 will ever have. That's because there's very little if anything at all redeeming about the film. At least on screen. To such a degree that, while it has some who liked it, the film is universally panned. There's a fan or two across the board who like it, but there isn't a sizeable community like you'd see for Discovery.

So, thankfully, the film is done and no sequel should ever be made.

Star Trek: Prodigy has not been in production for over a year as of this write-up. Reports claim that the show finished production in December of 2023. Netflix, who picked up the series after Paramount+ canceled it, would then release the show in July of 2024. Since the conclusion of the second season, there has been no word or update on the future of the show.

A season three is something many hope to see. From the cast, crew, and fandom alike, Prodigy was embraced. It was a highly entertaining show that split the difference between a legacy continuation and a brand new take on the Star Trek mythos. A spiritual successor to Star Trek: Voyager in some ways, the series mostly focused on a group of young cadet hopefuls. It received strong reviews and got people talking about what this show could be in time.

The franchise has seen three series underperform to some degree to kick off the Nu Trek era of the franchise, all while burning through money that Paramount+ will likely no longer be giving to any one show or film ever again. The recent failings of Star Trek: Section 31 can't be understated. The film was supposed to usher in the next era of Star Trek entertainment, with more made-for-streaming films being made, all about different concepts. It was a unique idea and would set up Star Trek to be able to tell some stories without having to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into a project.

We had ideas of what kind of films the franchise would see made next. Concepts like a spy thriller that wrapped up Star Trek: Enterprise, coupled with a return to the land of the living for one Charles "Trip" Tucker. Another idea would see the family of Worf banding together to have him his own Klingon house. We could do a huge idea and do a team-up movie featuring some of Star Trek's more beloved, but less profitable characters.
