The first of six characters to be played by Ken Curtis in this series. The character "Festus" would be introduced once in season eight. In season nine, Curtis would play one more character early in that season; then he was Festus for 298 episodes over the next 11 years, to the end of the series.

Quince tells the Marshal that breakfast is served at 4:00. When the cookie wakes the drovers for breakfast it's after daylight, yet even on the longest day of the year the sun doesn't rise in Kansas until after 6:00 a.m.

Jayhawkers

Trail boss Dolph Quince (Jack Elam), from Texas, sends for his friend Matt to help escort his cattle herd into Dodge because he is having trouble with Jayhawkers (Kansas renegades), and he hopes to ease the animosity his men have towards all Kansans. So Matt and Chester make a four day ride out to the cattle drive so that Dolph can get the cattle into Dodge without incident.

Without incident?! It wouldn't be Gunsmoke if the cattle drive had no incident. Nice to see Jack Elam in a good guy for a change and playing a good guy. Average episode, nice scenery. And ends with some shootout at the end.
