At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.

The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.

Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

David Lynch’s Eraserhead, godfather of cult movies, didn’t attract the same blockbuster audience as Star Wars, though both debuted in 1977, and both have influential legacies. Whereas producers, studios and, hell, everyone else have copied Star Wars hoping to emulate its financial success, artists — writers, directors, visual artists and so on — are the ones who want to emulate Eraserhead’s style and mood. Such directors as Stanley Kubrick, Mel Brooks, John Waters, and George Lucas himself have all expressed admiration for the innovation of the film.

The sci-fi TV series Babylon 5 has a similar legacy to Eraserhead. Other genre luminaries — Ronald D. Moore, George R.R. Martin — often cite the show as having a profound influence on their own work. Though never a major hit during its initial run from 1994 to 1998, its devoted cult following and innovation of formatting a TV series as an ultra-serialized novel keep it active in the zeitgeist.

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.

Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski has announced that an animated Babylon 5 movie is in the works. Taking to Twitter, Straczynski shared an image of a finished screenplay. Its cover page includes the title of the film, though the subtitle has been inked out, leaving the official title of the animated reboot a mystery. Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence is also headed to both formats this week, or if you’re in the mood for something a little more old school, both The Unseen and Slithis are getting the Blu-ray treatment on Tuesday as well.

Among the ranks of great sophomoric comedies are films like Animal House, Caddyshack, and Revenge of the Nerds, but you seldom or never hear about a fun little 1984 flick called Up the Creek. It's a silly but quintessential 80s romp even I would have overlooked if Amazon Prime hadn't continuously recommended it to me. It's your classic slobs versus snobs premise; slapstick but charming, with a uniqueness that shines above the dozens if not hundreds of 80s comedies with the same idea. I would go so far as to say it's the most overlooked comedy in history, but that's a claim specific to fans of juvenile enjoyment.

The film stars Tim Matheson, fresh off his Animal House fame, as Bob McGraw, a smooth-talking, womanizing slacker who's been thrown out of 16 previous universities yet still in college working on his English Literature degree. McGraw is well-read, and finds himself inserting classic literature quotes into everyday conversation.

Media executive Matty Simmons, a producer of the influential “National Lampoon’s Animal House” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” comedy movies, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 93.

His daughter, Kate Simmons, announced the news on her Instagram account on Thursday.

“Yesterday I lost my hero,” she wrote, in part. “My dad had gone from the sharpest, healthiest 93 year old most people have encountered to abruptly having every imaginable issue except corona. What he did in a lifetime was legendary.”

Matty Simmons was a Brooklyn native and an executive VP at the Diners Club credit card company. He founded Twenty First Century Communications in 1967 with Len Mogel to publish countercultural magazine Cheetah, then went on to publish Weight Watchers and National Lampoon magazines.

The National Lampoon launched in 1970 as a spinoff of the Harvard Lampoon humor magazine, which led to the 1972 stage show “Lemmings” and “The National Lampoon Radio Hour.” Performers included...

A little less than a year ago, in the wake of Jerry Doyle’s passing, Babylon 5 creator J.M. Straczynski made a passionate plea to the universe; too many B5 alumni had died already. Following the untimely deaths of Michael O’Hare, Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and more recently Jerry Doyle, Straczynski was “goddamned tired of it” and he asked the universe to “knock it off for a while”.

Flounder, the hapless fraternity student in the 1978 film National Lampoon’s Animal House, was Stephen Furst’s signature role, and one that Furst, who has died aged 63 of complications from diabetes, was typecast into recapitulating for much of the rest of his career. It’s Flounder (aka Kent Dorfman) who is told by Dean Wormer (John Vernon) that “fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son”. Rapper Prodigy, one-half of the New York hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, died from "complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis," the rapper's rep confirmed to Et. He was 42.

The rapper, whose real name is Albert Johnson, had battled sickle cell since his birth, and was in Las Vegas, Nevada, for a performance.

Stephen Furst, known for his scene-stealing turn as Flounder in National Lampoon’s Animal House, died Friday.

The actor passed away at his California home from complications due to diabetes, his sons confirmed on Facebook. He was 63.

Born in Norfolk, Virgina, the late actor had a life-long history with the disease. He lost both his mother and father to complications from diabetes when he was just 16 years old. Within weeks of each other, Furst’s father and mother died from heart disease and leukemia, respectively.
