Two Christmas series are trending on Netflix, and they couldn't be more different. Netflix's library contains a diverse array of Christmas titles. Although their roster includes an ever-shifting array of acquired movies and TV shows that come and go as licensing contracts change, their holiday season offerings for 2024 have included theatrical titles such as A Bad Moms Christmas and Journey to Bethlehem as well as a huge list of Hallmark CHannel movies including Haul Out the Holly, Christmas with a Kiss, Christmas in Notting Hill, A Biltmore Christmas, and A Merry Scottish Christmas.
However, since the late 2010s, they have also built out a huge roster of Netflix original Christmas movies, many of which take place in an interconnected universe. This includes the Princess Switch and A Christmas Prince trilogies, A Castle for Christmas, and The Knight Before Christmas. Acclaimed actor and action star Kurt Russell, star of such cinematic classics as The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, the Fast and Furious movies, Death Proof, the MCU, and much, much more, evidently makes a crowd-pleasing Santa Claus as his Christmas Netflix outing has now made its way into the top 10. Released in 2018, The Christmas Chronicles stars Russell as a gruff, but no less magical, version of Santa, who must save the festive season with the help of a couple of kids after his souped-up sleigh is wrecked.
Directed by Clay Kaytis from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman, and produced by the director behind Home Alone and Harry Potter, Chris Columbus, The Christmas Chronicles was met with solid reviews upon release and now sits at #9 in the Netflix top 10 behind the likes of the controversial religious saga Mary, the animated outing That Christmas, and the Christmas action movie Carry-On.

After arguably his best turn yet as Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds knows fans would love to see his "Merc With a Mouth" feature in the Avengers sequels. Despite the demand to see his character alongside the Avengers in the upcoming films, Reynolds insists he never wants his character to be a member of the hallowed supergroup.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds was asked about Deadpool's MCU future and whether that future includes his character appearing in the next two Avengers installments, Doomsday and Secret Wars. While Reynolds is optimistic about the prospects of joining the upcoming Avengers films, he insists he never wants Wade Wilson to join the supergroup or become a part of the X-Men. "There are no updates to share just yet. But I trust Kevin and [Marvel exec] Lou D’Esposito with my life. The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy.

Deadpool & Wolverine didn't hold back when it came to jokes, including ones that openly mocked studios like Fox and Disney, which made the movie. But there was one line that Disney thought went too far.
The scene in question was the brainchild of star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy. It comes near the end of the film, where Deadpool is moaning about Disney not including another X-Men cameo. And now, thanks to the movie's original script being revealed by the House of Mouse, we can show you the cut line.
Deadpool & Wolverine featuring myriad cameos from Marvel movies past, from Gambit to Elektra and Blade. But that's not enough for Deadpool, who is furious that they couldn't throw Magneto into the mix. “"F**K! What we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap," Deadpool says. "I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse cock in my throat.

Kurt Russell's underrated 2018 Christmas comedy is climbing up the Netflix charts six years after its original release. Russell may be best-known as an action star, thanks to career-defining movies like Escape from New York, The Thing, Tango & Cash, Tombstone, Backdraft, Stargate and many more. But over the years Russell has also carved out a space for himself in lighter fare, taking on both comedy and family-friendly roles.
The star’s work in family-friendly projects indeed began early on when he toiled as a lovable child and teen actor in Disney titles like The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and Now You See Him, Now You Don’t. Success as a grown-up comedy performer was in the offing for Russell starting in the 1980s, when he starred alongside wife Goldie Hawn in the hit movie Overboard.

Ryan Reynolds' production company, Maximum Effort, is working on reviving a classic superhero from 1942. Reynolds has been a Hollywood movie star for decades, but the last 10 years have seen his career reach soaring new heights. After appearing in Deadpool as the titular character in 2016, Reynolds has gone from strength to strength, with his business and marketing endeavors, his production company, and numerous other developments. Now Reynolds appears to be one of the most influential people in Hollywood, with many of his projects finding huge success.
Beyond the superhero genre, Reynolds has succeeded in creating films like Free Guy, The Adam Project, Detective Pikachu, and If, which all managed to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars. In total, Ryan Reynolds' acting career has resulted in excess of $4.4 billion dollars generated at the box office (via The Numbers), putting him ahead of many of the most profitable franchises in cinema. Ryan Reynolds has become a major name in blockbuster films nowadays. This is due in part to his association with the Deadpool franchise, the three films of which have been major moneymakers in his career. This year's Deadpool & Wolverine was particularly fruitful, making over $1 billion at the worldwide box office to become the no. 2 movie of the year so far. The superhero film has a chance of being usurped by the likes of Wicked or Moana 2, but will still almost assuredly maintain a spot in the global top 5 at the box office for 2024.
Reynolds has shown time and time again, however, that he does not need the draw of the MCU or Deadpool in order to turn a profit. 2019's Pokmon: Detective Pikachu, for example, made over $428 million at the worldwide box office. Even this year's family film If made $184.6 million. Through the performance of films like these in his over-$4-billion-box-office career,...

Deadpool & Wolverine broke box office records this summer and star Ryan Reynolds has now found his next comic book movie project. According to Variety, Paramount Animation has tapped Reynolds' production company, Maximum Effort Productions, to develop a Mighty Mouse feature.
Matt Lieberman, who worked with Reynolds on 2021's Free Guy, will write the screenplay. He's previously penned movies like The Christmas Chronicles, Rumble, Scoob!, and The Addams Family.
It's unclear what role Reynolds will play in Mighty Mouse beyond being a producer, though we'd be shocked if he doesn't end up lending his voice to the title character. As far as we're aware, this isn't the mystery project he, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy are set to reunite for.
Mighty Mouse was introduced way back in 1942 by animator Terrytoons. The character was initially meant to be a parody of Superman and debuted in a short titled The Mouse of Tomorrow.

Paramount Animation is here to save the day with an update to the long-gestating Mighty Mouse movie. Younger generations may not know who Mighty Mouse is, but if you’re as old as me (43), you could remember watching Mighty Mouse reruns in your pajamas with a bowl full of Croonchy Stars or Donkey Kong Junior cereal.

Director Shawn Levy says that Free Guy 2 will only happen if a compelling story is found. Ryan Reynolds agrees that sequels are common in Hollywood, but not always necessary. It may be best to leave Free Guy as a standalone movie, as a sequel could fall short.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Levy shared the latest update on Free Guy 2. He said that he's now "less certain" that the movie will actually end up happening, citing creative reasons for why Free Guy 2 has stalled. As Levy explained, a lot of effort has been put into trying to find the right story for a sequel that's "worth making," but they haven't been able to come up with a story just yet that they'd feel satisfied with pursuing.

It's been two years since "Free Guy" became a theatrical hit for Disney at a time when the industry was very much struggling to get back on its feet in the aftermath of the pandemic. But director Shawn Levy's take on a fictional video game that becomes too real for the characters within it, with Ryan Reynolds starring as the titular Guy, did well enough for itself that the studio quickly began looking at a sequel.
"Free Guy 2" was first mentioned as a real possibility more than two years ago after the first film grossed $331 million worldwide under less-than-ideal conditions. So, is the sequel still happening? If so, why has it taken so long to get it going? And what does any of this have to do with "Barbie?" We're here to answer all of those questions and get to the bottom of it armed with all of the...

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and...just like us? Like so many animated movies these days, The Addams Family 2 takes dark, subversive and ghostly characters and renders them human. The enduring appeal of the Addams Family is how unique they are. With four loose screws, a Victorian mansion, a couple black dresses and some bone-dry sarcasm, one can easily distinguish the Gothic clan from any other household. No longer.
Since Morticia's 1938 debut on the pages of the New Yorker, in a cartoon drawn by Charles Addams, the Addams Family has been gentrified in every way possible: in video games, spin-offs, feature films, dozens of commercials, and now, two animated movies directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and written by Matt Lieberman, Pamela Patter and Eric Rivinoja.

It has been long loading time for Shawn Levy’s Free Guy thanks to the end boss known as the pandemic but finally it’s here, and what a sleeper hit it has been in a very difficult year for cinema, as the medium tries to finds its feet again. In fact many are saying that Free Guy is perhaps the best video game film ever made, which is kind of ironic because the film itself is not a video game adaptation, but a brand new story inspired by a plethora of video game (and movie) influences.

Five years ago this month, screenwriter Matt Lieberman sat down to write his first draft of Free Guy, a spec script centering on Guy, a non-player character in a video game who slowly comes to realize the nature of his reality.
For Lieberman, the story of Guy resonated more than one might expect from the writer, who was already successful selling scripts for films such as The Christmas Chronicles and penning movies such as the animated Addams Family and Scoob!
“I was definitely feeling a little stuck in a place. It is more an autobiography than I’d be willing to admit,” Lieberman tells The Hollywood Reporter.
After completing a draft of Free Guy in around three weeks, the script sparked plenty of interest around Hollywood, with it ultimately landing at Fox. It languished in development for a few years before star and producer Ryan Reynolds picked up...

It's looking like we're going to get a sequel to Free Guy. Premiering in theaters on August 13, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as a background character in a video game who's given the opportunity to become the hero. The success it's seen on its opening weekend was enough to convince Disney to order more, as Reynolds posted on Twitter that there is now an official demand from the studio for a sequel.
"Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony," Reynolds tweeted. 20th Century Studios retweeted the post and director Shawn Levy also shared it along with the message, "Yuuuuuuuup."

Chicago – Welcome back to film reviewer Spike Walters … “Free Guy” has the sort of premise that seems to tingle with possibility. Ryan Reynolds stars as a background character in a Grand Theft Auto/Fortnite-style video game who gradually discovers the true nature of his existence. There are many different ways to go with this material, but “Free Guy” inexplicably strands Reynolds and us in a half assed romantic comedy about coders instead.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Reynolds brings just the right tone of bright eyed obliviousness to the role of mild mannered bank teller named Guy. He’s blissfully unaware of the true nature of the game around him and treats the frequent armed robberies at his place of employment as just another minor inconvenience that can be forgotten about after a few beers with his best friend, a security guard at the bank played by Lil Rel Howry. But that all changes...

Taika Waititi as a villain, Jodie Comer singing and a triple whammy of universes are all part of Shawn Levy’s new film, “Free Guy,” out Friday in theaters.
Levy directs Ryan Reynolds, who plays Guy, a bank teller, who one day discovers he is actually an Npc (a non-player character) in a video game. Upon learning this, and with the help of Jodie Comer’s character, Molotov Girl, he decides to break free and save the world.
With an original screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, the “Stranger Things” director took the script and ran with it, paying homage where necessary and working with production designer Ethan Tobman to fill the world of the film with Easter eggs and references. His greatest achievement was getting three yes answers from Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilm to agree to using their most iconic IP for the film.

Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter on Saturday to reveal that Disney wants a Free Guy sequel.
“Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony,” the actor wrote. “If it isn’t called, “Albuquerque Boiled Turkey” we’ve failed.”
20th Century Studios seemed to confirm the news when it retweeted Reynolds’ post. Director Shawn Levy also shared it in a quote tweet, adding “Yuuuuuuuup.”
Free Guy was released in U.S. theaters on Friday, following a year-long delay brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, taking in $10.5M in its debut, including $2.2M in Thursday night previews.
The sci-fi action comedy centers on Guy (Reynolds), a bank teller who discovers that he’s actually an Npc (non-player character) inside a brutal, open world video game, subsequently deciding to become the hero of the story, by saving his friends from...

Chicago – Playing video games is one of the single most infuriating experiences that I continue to put myself through. One of my few masochistic traits emerge whenever I boot up my PC or PS4 …
and that’s because I always feel the need to play every game on the most difficult setting. This leads to a seemingly endless cycle of fighting, killing, dying, and then starting all over and trying again.

Einstein said it best when he gave us his definition of what constitutes “insanity,” and if he were alive today he would likely diagnose my attempt to beat any Dark Souls game on the hardest difficulty as just that. There’s a great level of satisfaction in beating that cycle and reaching the end, which is something video game-influenced film Free Guy knows a thing or two about.

Director Shawn Levy’s latest film, Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, manages to explore the human condition and the importance of relationships while simultaneously providing an entertaining and engaging experience that is atypical of other summer blockbuster type fare.
The main character of the film is Guy (Reynolds), a non-descript bank teller stuck in a rut wherein he does the same exact thing every day, again and again. That is, until he passes a beautiful woman on the street (Jodie Comer) and immediately becomes determined to change the path of his own life in the hopes of finding her again. Of course, this proves more difficult than it sounds as Guy is only an ostensible “free guy” and is actually a fictional background character in a world-wide virtual reality video game. Now, determined to find the mysterious woman of his dreams and be the man worthy of her, Guy goes...

When the new 20th Century Studios movie Free Guy opens on Friday (August 13), one question will no doubt be on the minds of viewers emerging from the theater: Is director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds’ cheerfully bonkers video game adventure the start of a brand new franchise?
Reynolds stars as Guy, an unassuming and always upbeat bank teller in the unusually violent metropolis of Free City, whose life is a curious mix of repetitious routines like getting coffee with best friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) and having his bank robbed by a brutal criminal gang.
But all that changes when Guy, with the help of a mysterious woman named Molotovgirl (Jodie Comer), discovers that he not a real person at all but a background player in an open world video game called — you guessed it — “Free City.”
“I’m a little superstitious,” says Levy when Den of Geek asks...

Several brilliant new posters for the Ryan Reynolds action-comedy Free Guy are here to remind us all of the movie's video game roots, paying homage to such classics as Street Fighter II, Doom, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Dropping Reynolds' unsuspecting Npc (Non-player character) into several familiar video game worlds including Super Mario 64, Minecraft and Among Us, the posters are a hint at Free Guy's love of the platform that inspired it.

We’ve come a long way since Disney released “Tron” 39 years ago — so far, in fact, that some people actually buy into the theory that what we think of as existence could be just a giant computer simulation, as Elon Musk described at Code Conference in 2016: “Forty years ago we had ‘Pong,’ like two rectangles and a dot. That was what games were. Now 40 years later, we have photorealistic 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously, and it’s getting better every year,” Musk mused. Therefore, “if you assume any rate of improvement at all, the games will become indistinguishable from reality.”

A non-player character evolves into a sentient AI in a cheerfully silly riff on The Truman Show, with Taika Waititi and Jodie Comer
The great big handsome-goofy face of Ryan Reynolds looms out of the screen in this fantasy comedy from screenwriter Matt Lieberman and director Shawn Levy (of the Night at the Museum franchise). It’s an undemanding and cheerfully silly riff on the themes of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, and what the heck we’re all doing in this big old universe of ours: as if someone took The Truman Show or Inception – or even The Lego Movie – and stripped out every serious satirical ambition, replacing it with M&m-coloured spectacle. The result is not something that’s in any way challenging, but Reynolds is so puppyishly eager to please.

Monotony isn’t a problem for the generic citizens of Free City, an open-world video game in the vein of “Grand Theft Auto,” where robberies, shootouts, and explosion are commonplace.
Within this virtual realm of bloodless violence, director Shawn Levy builds the action-packed rom-com “Free Guy,” his most thematically ambitious project yet thanks to writers Matt Lieberman (“The Christmas Chronicles”) and Zak Penn (“Ready Player One”).
Fortunately for this team, their big-budget creation evokes a bit of “The Truman Show” more than it does the dreadful “Pixels,” another picture that bet on the mass appeal of video-game culture but with an angle of nostalgia. Levy, a Hollywood regular behind the bankable “Night at the Museum” franchise, operates in eye-popping VFX set pieces and above-average comic timing, consistently landing dialogue-driven, self-aware gags.

On paper, Free Guy is a movie about a bank teller named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) who one day realizes that he’s actually a non-playable character in a popular online video game called Free City. While Guy is mostly interested in using his newfound awareness to win the heart of the Free City player he’s fallen in love with, he soon finds himself in the middle of a game development conspiracy that could ultimately lead to Free City’s shutdown and the end of his world.
In reality, however, Free Guy is a movie about references. While many of those references are little more than brief nods to popular video games, even the film’s basic structure feels like a compilation of various concepts that we’ve seen before. Honestly, one of the best ways to properly describe the movie is to take a page out of its playbook and use references.

According to director Tony Cervone, a Scoob! sequel is now in development. Originally set for a proper theatrical premiere, the animated Scooby-Doo prequel was instead made available to own or rent digitally in addition to screening in limited theaters last May. The movie pulled in around $26.3 million at the box office, but given the circumstances of its release, it's difficult to truly gauge how much of a success Scoob! has been for Warner Bros.
Apparently, the studio sees the potential in expanding the Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, as a sequel is reportedly in development. Speaking with Comic Book Movie, Cervone was asked about the future of Scoob! and if he'd considered a prequel or sequel. In response, the director confirmed that a follow-up is already in development, and better yet, Cervone and the rest of the original creative team are all back on board. From the interview:
