Before The NeverEnding Story whisked us away to Fantasia, its lead star, Noah Hathaway, lived a plot twist worthy of the big screen. He was cast, dropped, and then re-cast again as Atreyu. His journey to land the iconic role wasn’t just long; it was wild.

When Hathaway stepped into auditions for the 1984 fantasy epic, he already had some serious credits. He starred in Battlestar Galactica (1978-1979) and appeared in Best Friends (1982) alongside Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn. So when German director Wolfgang Petersen came aboard The NeverEnding Story, Hathaway had experience, but not yet the part.

He first auditioned under a different director. And not just once. “They did one of those worldwide searches to cast the role and they saw something like 50,000 kids,” Hathaway said during a 2019 Entertainment Weekly reunion interview.

Television producer Ronald D. Moore is well-known for shows like Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind. He also worked as a writer and producer on Star Trek: The Next Generationand Deep Space Nine. Now, his next project will be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a Prime Video series based on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy book series by Wang Dulu.

Amazon is going all-in on Sony Pictures Television's adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The new series, based on the Crane-Iron Series by novelist Wang Dulu (which was famously turned into an Ang Lee film back in 2000), will be created and produced by Lucifer and Mrs. Davis writer Jason Ning as well as the prolific and acclaimed executive producer of Outlander and Battlestar Galactica fame, Ronald D. In today's latest instance of truly nothing being sacred anymore, Deadline has revealed the news that Prime Video is moving forward with a series adaptation of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," the story made most famous by director Ang Lee's soaring, sumptuous, and sweepingly romantic wuxia classic. The 2000 film was based on the Chinese novel of the same name by author Wang Dulu, which was actually the fourth installment of a larger saga called the "Crane-Iron Series." The Amazon-owned streamer and Sony Pictures Television are developing a series adaptation of the story, based on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy series of novels by Wang Dulu. The books also served as source material for Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 film.

Jason Ning (Lucifer, The Brother Sun) is writing and will executive produce alongside Ron Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica). Both have overall deals at Sony, which released Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon through its Sony Pictures Classics label and owns rights to the Crane-Iron books.

Netflix's upcoming limited series adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved romance novel Pride and Prejudice has confirmed its lead cast. The final season of Outlander just got a colossal update from one of its leading stars. Outlander follows Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII nurse who goes back in time to Scotland in 1743. An adaptation of Ethan Pettus’ sci-fi military book, Primitive War is set during the Vietnam War and features American soldiers facing off with dinosaurs! The first trailer for Primitive War is here, and it’s a wild mix of military action and dinosaur horror. The movie stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Jeremy Piven (Entourage) as U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War who discover something terrifying in the jungle—dinosaurs.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Luke Sparke, Primitive War is based on Ethan Pettus’ book series. The story follows an elite military team called Vulture Squad, sent into a remote jungle in 1968 to find a missing platoon of Green Berets. But instead of just enemy soldiers, they face prehistoric monsters.

“Three days ago, I lost my Green Berets. There was something going on in that battle,” Piven’s character says in the tense trailer. As the squad fights to survive, they realize they must become as savage as the creatures hunting them.

Sparke, who also co-wrote and produced the film, was excited by the crazy concept.

They call it “high concept.” In the upcoming Primitive War, soldiers in Vietnam do battle with prehistoric dinosaurs, and the teaser trailer for the action/horror/sci-fi movie has arrived.

Debuted by THR this morning, watch the teaser trailer for Primitive War below! “This ain’t no walk in the park,” the trailer promises, taking a shot at Jurassic Park in the process.

On that note, it’s awesome to see filmmakers outside the Jurassic franchise playing with dinosaurs, as that’s something we haven’t seen enough of over the years. The high concept approach to the material here reminds us a bit of the 2023 movie 65, which saw Adam Driver going up against dinosaurs. And it looks like Primitive War has enough of a budget behind it to make the dinosaur action look pretty damn good, which gives us hope for this one.

Expect Primitive War to stomp...

An action thriller now set for release in the U.S. next month could quickly become a modern classic if its soaring score on Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by. Starring Oppenheimer and Black Hawk Down star Josh Hartnett as a bleach-blonde assassin, Fight or Flight finds the actor, who is currently in the middle of a triumphant return to screens, doing his best John Wick as he is forced to fight for survival while 37,000 feet in the air.

To be clear, he’s aboard a plane. But it just so happens that this particular plane is brimming with rival assassins. Fight or Flight now boasts a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is set for release in the United States on May 9, 2025. Critics lucky enough to have already boarded the action outing have raved about the fight sequences on display and Hartnett’s endearingly cynical lead performance.

Josh Hartnett is back witha new banger after Trap, and critics love every bit of it. From director James Madigan,Fight or Flight has landed a laudable 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes following its U.K. debut last month; however, the audience score is unavailable at the time of this writing. Even so, the reviews from top critics so far put the movie in a good light, one of which is from Empire Magazine’s John Nugent, who states:

“A solid bit of high-concept B-movie fun, establishing Josh Hartnett as a credible action hero, and James Madigan as a genre director to watch.”

The reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" is one of the greatest and most ambitious science-fiction television shows ever aired. When "Galactica" begins, humanity is living on 12 colony planets named in tribute to the signs of the Zodiac: Caprica, Tauron, etc. About 50 years ago, mankind created robotic servants called the Cylons, who rebelled and waged war until an armistice.

When the series begins, the Cylons (who have upgraded into human-like forms) return and wipe out the 12 colonies. Star Trek: Voyager may be one of the black sheep of the franchise, much like Deep Space Nine. However, some episodes prove why the series has a cult following. The season 6 episode ‘Blink of an Eye’ is the series’s highest-rated episode and explores the concept of time dilation in the context of an alien planet where time runs faster.

Time dilation as a concept has been explored many times since, but the most famous one seems to be in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. The sci-fi epic sees the Endurance crew visit Miller’s Planet, where an hour amounts to seven years in Earth time. While the ‘Mountains’ sequence is legendary, Voyager still did time dilation better.

The Star Trek franchise does best when it takes scientific concepts and explores a philosophical or human angle on them.

Like other shows in the franchise, Star Trek: Voyager had a soft spot for certain characters and assigned the bulk of the storylines to these select few. While the show boasted of a stellar cast, the series still had Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Janeway and Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine at the center in most episodes.

Jeri Ryan proved to be an asset for the show, driving many viewers, but the attention given to Seven of Nine led to the series sidelining one of the best Vulcans. Tim Russ brought the character of Commander Tuvok to life in the best way possible and the character’s story was also interesting. Alas, he did not get the necessary screentime.

The announcement of a new holiday series has us already looking forward to Christmas and the six-episode limited series is based on the novel, The Twelve Dates of Christmas (working title) by Jenni Bayliss.

Famously starring Mae Whitman (Good Girls), Mary McDonnell and Jane Seymour, the series is set to make its world premiere during the Countdown to Christmas on Hallmark Channel, and will also stream the following day on Hallmark+.

Ronald D. Moore is one of the most legendary writers in sci-fi due to his contributions to Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. The writer reportedly ventured into the franchise by just going on a tour of the Tng set and submitting a script to Gene Roddenberry’s assistant. Since then, he has been promoted to story editor, writer, and producer.

Moore contributed his storytelling skills to many incredible episodes of Tng and also went on to work on Deep Space Nine. However, he only served a few weeks on Voyager before leaving the franchise due to creative differences. Still, the story pitches he made at the time reportedly formed the basis of his work on Battlestar Galactica.

Rumors continue to heat up for the first Star Wars film released in theaters in over five years. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is set to premiere in the summer of 2026. One rumor and question are whether Katee Sackoff will reprise her role of Bo-Katan Kryze in the film.

The actress has portrayed the character in both live action and voiced her on various series for the franchise. She has been a hit with the fanbase and starred alongside Pedro Pascal in Season 3 of The Mandalorian series.

The actress thus far has not given much out in terms of whether or not she will appear in the upcoming movie. When asked at an Indiana Comic Panel about a possible return, Collider shared Sackoff's response.

"I have not been in the armor in 2025," said the actress. Though, it was reported that she had a big grin on her face when she made the statement.

Two years after its initial announcement, fans have finally received a promising update on the live-action God of War adaptation from Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios.

"Right now, I'm working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War," he explained. "It's a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of. They've asked me to come in, and I'm literally in the writers' room working on that."

Video game adaptations are all the rage at the moment, and with HBO’s The Last Of Us having proven to be a huge hit, other streaming services are keen on recreating that level of success.

One thing was certain: Per its title, it was set in the demimonde of the galaxy far, far away, among its scoundrels, and smugglers, and bounty hunters and assorted other criminals. If the recent rash of older-woman-younger-man romances have had one thing in common, it’s the emphasis on the first half of that equation. With a pedigree like that, you might think that The Time Guardian would be better known than it is. Instead, it largely sank without trace on its brief cinema release in 1987, and became one of those films that was doomed to lurk on the lower shelves of VHS rental libraries.

Unexpectedly, though, The Time Guardian has emerged on Prime Video in the UK, which means subscribers have the rare opportunity to watch one of the weirdest – and less often-discussed – sci-fi movies of the 1980s.

On paper, it’s a typical B-movie of its era.

Battlestar Galactica is one of the few science fiction series that proves reboots can improve upon their original source material and that television was ready to support a sci-fi franchise that wasn't Star Wars or Star Trek. From its pitch-perfect pilot to nearly every episode that followed, Ronald D. Moore and his creative team brought a grounded approach to their story — well as grounded as "being chased around space by killer robots" as you could get. But the series finale "Daybreak" alienated some fanswith its resolution to the Galactica's journey to Earth and the startling revelation that Cylons were the forefathers of humanity. Yes, apparently, we're all descended from killer robots. Even Moore has expressed a few regrets on how "Daybreak" wrapped up the series. "To me, I wanted [Battlestar Galactica] to have a definitive ending...a part of me wishes I hadn't done that," he said at last year's San Diego Comic-Con,...
